Danny and I were good friends as teenagers. I'm posting this because people have given me a hard time saying we were friends. The truth is we still are I was back stage with him at the Joy Theater in New Orleans. I love Danny like a brother. I am going to digitize this tape and send it to his brother Dick who manages him. Maybe they will release it. I don't know. What I do know is it is a piece of my heart.

Please please seek it! What a piece of art it must be if it represents his music and life at the time. I dont wanna sound greedy but it seems like a legendary level tape that i, along with tons of other people who have heard and reheard every last thing hes made, would die to hear. I totally respect that ur not publishing it without permission though. This tape seems crazy important in understanding his art beyond his regular discography

Chill out, mate. There is nothing wrong with fans wanting to hear this, or asking to hear this. If the bloke doesn't want to share it, obviously he doesn't have to but in many cases this is how previously lost media gets found - people own a single copy, someone contacts them about it, they share it, other people hear it. I understand where you're coming from but it's asinine to paint the people who want to hear it as "vultures" mate.

Hey John, I ended up on this vid randomly, reading some of your comments on other D.J. videos. Dare I say your powerful comment on Story of an Artist hit really close to home (as does the song). I can't believe you feel the need to justify yourself just because some morons are calling BS on you. We all know what amount of unkindness lies in the comments section under pretty much anything but that really baffles me still. Just wanna say thanks for sharing your stories and sorry for your loss. My God, I remember being a poor Mexican kid in southern New Mexico, and all we could afford were those cheap-ass "Certron" cassette tapes. This is very humbling to know that many Classic songs came from these little live home recordings from a self-taught kid in his 20's. I was brought here because I had been wanting to make some special A-432 Hz conversions of some of his music for my channel. God bless you all. God Bless America. God Bless you, Daniel Johnston looking down on of from that great piece of pie in the sky. - The Acoustic Rabbit Hole

When I was 16 my friend and I just left a show in Savannah, Ga. I’m from Savannah but what happened next blew my mind. I heard a song that I recognized but thought to myself that there was no way as I hadn’t heard about this show and there wasn’t rlly flyers anywhere but on the one of hundreds of random bars downtown Savannah. I walk up to the bar with my bud and I find out Daniel is playing upstairs. A huge smile came on my face as I didn’t get to see my favorite style of music very often as I was a kid going to and playing progressive metal at venues all the time. I was 16 and my buddy was 21. I told him to go on up and check out a few songs cause it’s a great opportunity. Once my friend went up the bouncer asked me if I was a fan of Daniels to which I said “big time.” He put his arm around me, walked me halfway up the stairs and said “two songs and then you gotta go, brother.” That bouncer made my night and I’ll always remember him letting me see one of my favorite songwriters.

Thank you for telling me you love me. I needed to hear that right now. Thank you. I love you too. Growing up with Danny (as we called him) was great. He was my good friend. He was always a very nice person that had a pure heart. You don't meet many people like him today in this world. He would stay all night at my house and I would stay at his house. His mom would make us breakfast and lunch. Seeing all the pictures from his home in West Virginia on the internet brought back a lot of childhood memories. I used to sit next to him at the piano in his parents basement and try to play my guitar along with his songs. He told me he still had the tapes of us he made. I had hoped to visit him in Texas and listen to them with him, but now he has gone home. One day I will see him again. Knowing him as a teenager and seeing what happened to him made me cry. I wanted to hug him and heal him. His disease took away a big part of him that I knew. He still remembered the things we did as kids, but a part of him was broken. it was very sad to see my friend and what he had become. He used to tell me " We have to escape the working class" I never did. I'm glad he did and lived his dream. God Bless

In every word you write you show us how much you love him and how much you still think of him and all the memories you have together. Danny was my very good friend. We hung out together often. He would stay all night at my house and I would stay at his. His Mom would make us breakfast and lunch. We hung out in his parents basement. When you see him young playing the piano in pictures, I sat next to him many times listening to his songs and played my guitar along with him at that piano. He would draw at a table in the basement and teach me to draw with him. Nothing I drew was ever close to what he could do. He was an amazing artist. He would draw eaten apple cores with a leg. He had the craziest ideas. Eyeballs with wings. We loved it! We thought it was wonderful. Later in life I moved on and when I found out about him being popular I bought his CDs at a record store. When I played them it was reliving my childhood. The songs were the same ones he played for me as a teenager. I heard them all before the world did. I really loved him and he loved me. I went to New Orleans to see him about a year before he passed I think. He remembered it all. I told him I stopped coming over as my parents kicked me out. I had an abusive home life. He never knew that as a friend when we were teenagers. In New Orleans I told him what happened and even in his physiological disturbed mind he said " I will take care of you" He still loved my after all those years. It really touched me. It really hurt me to see my childhood friend go from the person I had known to the state he was in at New Orleans. It made me cry. I wished I could have hugged him and brought back the friend I knew, but the mental illness and medication had took a huge part of him away. I hope when he passed he was made whole and is enjoying his existence in Heaven. He certainly deserves it. Thank you for your comments and appreciating my friend.

I've learnt how to play Walking the Cow, Worried Shoes, Some Things last a Long Time, and many others in piano. His music makes me feel like he understands me. He understood art, he understood creativity and honesty in music. How wonderful it must be to have had Daniel Johnston make a tape for you, you're a really lucky person. He even inspired me to create my own music. It's not as good as his, but the fact that he just decided to grab a cassette recorder and record his own music as a way of expressing himself is so inspiring to me. No need to be a "star." It's all a bunch of evil Hollywood brainwashing bullshit. Just be yourself.

That's super neat. I saw your comment about it on a old interview of him and had to check to see if you posted a video of it. What a wonder it must've been to be his friend as a teen

Danny was great. He was normal back then with no problems. We had a lot of fun. I was heart broken when I seen him at the Joy theater. He remembers everything about when we were kids but mostly he just sat there with his head down. I think he was medicated.

@@johnfair62 he's now a huge inspiration to me! I found his work 3 weeks ago, now I'm addicted! I'm gonna be getting a chord organ to play some of his classic tunes.
