Engine says its mate in 11 2. Rf2+ Ke1 3. Nd3+ Kd1 4. c3 Qf8+ 5. Kf6 Ra2 6. Rxa2 e5+ 7. dxe5 Qh8+ 8. Kg5 h4+ 9. Kf4 g3+ 10. Kxf3 Qf6+ 11. exf6 d6 12. Rd2# 0-1

If his opponent played perfectly it was a mate in 11, but since his opponent played sub optimally it was a mate in 4. for all those asking in comments.

Don't worry! I will clarify your confusion. Here, the exclamation mark is used to show emphasis in a sentence, it does not refer to the factorial operation. Hope this was helpful!

No, because if Kg1 black plays Rxf3 with a discovered check, then white has to play Kh1 and Rf1 is mate

there is no earlier forced mate. the engine says that the initial position is -M11 for black. the reason this ended earlier than that was because his opponent did not defend correctly.

@Someone i would still consider it m11 regardless even if it’s just queen checks over and over because maybe you can’t hide the king and after 3 checks your opponent forks your rook. then you are screwed. gotta take everything into consideration

“Mate in #” means you can force a mate in # moves even if your opponent plays perfectly. It’s possible to mate sooner than that if your opponent does not prolong the game properly, which is the case here. It’s still a forced mate in 11.
