My mother favourite song last time Isaw my mother alive ❤️ when she was well she had Dementia and my dad came all the way from Scotland ihadnt seen my dad David for many years they split up .But idont.know how he got to get on the Airplane because he had so many illness and bag full of pills. But he managed to get to Australia in fact when he went back to his nursing home .He was abit of hero there because he had one of those trolley the elderly walk with .And most people can't make it to the Toilet never mind all the way to Australia. He wanted to see my mother at her nursing home. And they set up a table for lunch and then went to a the music room .And my.mother sang take you home again Kathleen .my dad got chocked up every did .With my mother's illness first thing she said to my dad was you look like that bastard iwas married to .😄ha ha we all laughed .So she always wanted her ashes scattered in her beloved Scotland Paisley Renfrewshire down a braie .And i did that and still have a laugh my niece Elithbeth in when everything went wrong we were at a look out People watching us the ashes went everywhere iwent in to a run my niece grabbed me to stop me on this steep.hill..Icouldnt stop we laughed our heads of and still do .instead of being sad it was very comical fun .So seems all roads lead to Scotland for me .Now live in Australia. If it wasn't for mother's No one in this world would be here . Including Jesus his mother virgin Mary was a human and died .And what is a woman a woman is.Mother Earth ❤️❤️❤️❤️And need father's as well and go well together.💯🙏🎺🔑❤️❤️❤️

What a beautiful story. I spent my childhood in County MAYO in the west of Ireland. I went to a convent school in England - run by nuns - girls only - came to Canada in 1960. Now I live in the desert in California - in a place called 29 Palms. It's pretty isolated - with vultures and snakes and hawks and turtle doves - cactus growing everywhere. Most of the time It's very hot - the only time it's cool is before the sun comes up, at dawn. That's when I feel Ireland coz There are mountains all around me and it's magical - the QUIET of the mountains - the highlands all around.. I've lived in Los Angeles for years and I finally escaped and moved out to the desert. My life has been an adventure and yet a magical mystery tour. Elvis was a magical mystery too -. I've never heard him sing "Kathleen" - it made me cry like a baby - tears of joy at the sentiment/story in the song. I've been an Elvis fan since the early days HEARTBREAK HOTEL etc - but I love his "serious" gospel stuff best. "The Old Wooden Cross" especially. I'd better cut this short - it's late and I should sleep. Have you read much bible or New Testament - ST.LUKE. - wrote about Jesus. I can't believe I waited all my life to read Luke's gospel. Paul McCartney song -'LET IT BE" about MOTHER MARY - GOOD NIGHT GOD BLESS YOU AND KEEP YOU !

Never mind that this song was written by Thomas Westendorf, a son of German immigrants, and as such has nothing to do with Ireland. Still a beautiful song though.

Yes. Certainly a German smart enough to write for a largely Scotts-irish and Irish audience. He knew what would sell, I'm sure. The name "Kathleen" and the expression "Bonnie Bride" are too marked for him to have been evoking his German origins.

Love all your song to bit. This one always reminds me of Star Trek when the crew goes crazy and sings this over the intercoms. Captain Kirk is not happy.
