I think the "masters artist set" refers to the artist that curated the set. Jean being the master artist behind this set. It's colors she frequently uses and loves. That's the way I have always understood it, I could be wrong tho

@@corriemcginnis4400 my family pitched in to buy me a set of large tubes of their watercolors for my birthday and as grateful as I am, I asked for them long before I knew about the controversy with the primatek line and the lightfast issues. So now I just don’t trust the brand anymore and I wont be using their paints until my own lightfast testing is complete on them. They way they handled the primatek controversy was WRONG. I’m sorry but it really was. You don’t tell your loyal fan base that’s been supporting your brand for years and is responsible for your success, that if they don’t like it, don’t buy it. I feel Daniel Smith paint company owed their customers more than that. As an artist, we literally sign our name using your product. We should be able to trust you and the information on your labeling. We should be able to make an informed decision about whether or not we want to buy your product by knowing what is in it. that’s just my two cents.. it was a slap in the face.

Not a beginners set for the reasons stated but I have to chime in to say that I’ve never seen another artist’s palette so closely match my own intuitive love for golden hour/evening colors as Jean Haines Master Artist Set. If an artist is able to control their values to allow for enough light in their painting this set is magical. (Substituting Quin pink for Opera pink)

I got this set last year, and took it as a fun, vibrant, playful group of colors that stretched my imagination from the expected colors in a set. I agree with the suggested additions you make. When I got the set I placed it into an 18 color palette adding almost the same colors you had ha. (hansa yellow medium, pyrrole red, quin magenta, french ultramarine, phthalo blue green shade, and indigo, along with some earthy tones, yellow ochre, Italian burnt sienna, and burnt umber.) I keep this palette at work and paint in my sketchbook when i have a break.

I definitely agree with you. I saw this set exactly the same way as a fun and interesting challenge. The resulting painting that I did using some of these colors definitely made me stretch outside my comfort zone and I discovered a few new favorites. I just wish that they wouldn’t call this “The Master artist set.” I do feel like the name is a little misleading.

As a new artist, I am confuse about everything you are saying. But it’s probably because I don’t really listen to most artists because they say these things but they don’t explain the reasons like you are. At the same time other artists do a lot more things. So now that I am paying attention which gets me confuse. Thank you for this video .

I think opera yellow and lunar blue may be the cmy triad, but I can definitely see apatite and yellow mixing a green or cascade and yellow. I liked the orange and magenta! Nice red. To me, every DS master set I have seen is a palette used by that specific artist, like Angela Fehr here on KZfaq or Paul Wang. Eventually, every artist develops their preferences that way. I got hooked on the essential six color set and later on got the primatek 6 and I’ve really liked doing weird stuff with them. I have a brown madder (pyrrol scarlet and piemontite) and a lava brown as I call it (new gamboge, rose and hematite) and a few other weird mixes I like to use. That’s just me!

Just to clarify, in my test the Aussie Red Gold didn't fade as much as it significantly dulled down (after just four months of sun exposure). I just don't want anyone in fear that their painting will disappear before their eyes, it will just not be vibrant anymore. 🙈

Thank you, I appreciate that information and I hope others find it helpful. I did however see on Kimberly cricks blog post that hers faded in dilutions and nearly did disappear, in the heavy dilutions though. Otherwise it lost chroma and dulled.

@@nicolemartinart5819 Yeah, like I wrote under the last video, that's my standard as well. However, at the beginning of learning about it I didn't realise this (and remember, I need to put them up over the summer over a period of three years, in a borrowed window), and as I was choosing colours to continue testing, some that were already showing unacceptable levels of change after four months I didn't bother putting up again, especially since I knew I would be able to use them anyways. It's a collection of a few colours, this one, the DS Permanent Alizarin Crimson, operas, Mayan Blue and a couple of others.

@@hannahthufvesson oh I'm sorry, I forgot you had said that. We should not have to go through all this. We should be able to trust the labeling on art supply products but unfortunately, they are unregulated and no one holds them accountable so they can say whatever they like. Oftentimes it's about making a sale, not necessarily the quality of the product. For example, Winsor Newton has a line of watercolor pencils and colored pencils that I can tell straight off are fugitive. I owned both and it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out these bright, neon candy colors are not lightfast . Still, they've used claims like lightfast, archival and artists quality on the packaging without providing any evidence to back it up or even a LF rating on each pencil. There's no chart or anything on the website or any source material to back up the claims and frankly, these new supplies that WN are having made in China are just awful quality and a disrespect to the brand and any reputation they have earned over the years. Usually when Winsor Newton makes lightfast claims they at least have a rating that corresponds to either the blue wool scale or ASTM. On these newer things coming in like the pencils, pastels, and budget gouache there is nothing. (Not to be confused with their designers gouache.)

You are very welcome and thank you for watching. I’m always a little nervous when I post a review because I’m usually more critical than other KZfaqrs and not everyone likes that but I have to be honest. My first responsibility is to my viewers because they save up their hard earned money to buy these things and they should be able to make an informed choice. Especially those from overseas or in areas with minimal access to art supplies, sometimes they pay twice what a product is worth after shipping and import fees. I want to be 100% honest and as helpful as possible.

I agree. I saw your original comment and your right that it's not fair to compare the set to a split primary color set. I think I may have misunderstood the title. My interpretation of "master artist set." Was that you'd have everything you needed included for a master artists palette which would include at least *some* primary colors and I felt these colors were very limited and odd choices to be honest. There is a lot I like about it but it doesn't feel whole or cohesive enough to me. It is a fun set to try new things though.

I couldn't agree with you more! Lovely colors but including fugitive and granulating for a palette you can mix yourself is confusing. I got a Primatek by mistake and really don't want to mix with my other DS paints. Swatched I can see a fall foliage painting. But I can mix the colors from my single pigment lightfast M. Graham . Great video. Thank you.

I love m graham paints, they are my absolute favorite! They often don't get enough love on KZfaq and people criticize their smaller color selection but truthfully they have everything you'd need and more. Brands like DS with 400 colors is just ridiculous and a gimmick. Most of those colors are convenient mixes in varying combinations you can easily mix yourself and in some instances a color plus white which in my opinion is a big no no in watercolor paints. I almost find it insulting that Daniel Smith sells rose of ultramarine and imperial purple which are literally the same two pigments in slightly different proportions and I can't believe that anyone would buy them. It's an insult to their customers intelligence frankly and an obvious cash grab. It's not fine artists buying those colors from them, it's hobbyists, crafters and amateurs who don't know they are being ripped off because they don't understand color theory or really how to mix their own colors. There I said it.
