I’ve been using Wisteria a lot recently for mixing other colors. I find you can get very interesting hues by mixing it with yellows, blues and reds. I highly recommend experimenting with that one.

I think Daniel Smith's weakness is they don't do low-tinting strength colors well. So although I haven't got their Cobalt Violets or Ultramarine Violet/Red, I have heard they are poor performers. In this brand, I have quin violet, quin purple, and carbazole violet. Handprint did find the DS PV 23 was relatively lightfast, at least way back then.

The cobalt violet I received was separated from the binder and very greasy. I had to throw it away as it was unuseable. It was also very light and unsaturated - like yours Jay. I was very surprised at this from DS. Don't waste your money on this colour.

Quinacridone Violet is one of my favorites. Perylene Violet is a good color for shadows, I think. The Cobalt Violet PV49 is a difficult to rewet pigment... let the water sit on the dot for a bit. It could be better when it's fresh out of the tube. I prefer the warmer violets they are more useful to me.

That wisteria is really pretty. I'm in the process of testing the few DS genuines I have, but there are a few more months to go before I'm done. I have the Amethyst and it is a beautiful color so I'm hoping it doesn't shift. I hate cobalt violet. I hate the color, I hate the gloppiness, and I hate how much of a struggle it is to get a decent amount of color from it. Moonglow is fugitive, but Kim has a video on how to mix your own that is lightfast. Since I don't use it I haven't really bothered. I don't have the PV23 in DS, but I do in Da Vinci and it's lovely in that brand too.

I hate cobalt violet too and cobalt green. Both are banned from my palette forever 🤣

The PR177 in Moonglow is fugitive and fades in lightfast tests that I've seen. I'd rather make my own and substitute the PR177 with something else.

The reason the Prematec paints don’t have any pigment information on them is because they are supposed to be a very controversial. Now are exactly what they say. They are amethyst, violet or purple is made with just that amethyst it’s supposed to be made purely with the mineral, but some professional chemical tests have been done independently of Daniel smith and show that some of them have less than onepercent of the genuine pigment in them, which is a bit misleading. However, the paints are still beautiful. Also, I Had the same problem as you with the cobalt violet it was extremely weak. I thought I didn’t have enough on my dot sheet, but you’re not the only one to have mentioned this.

Nice swatches. Cobalt Violet used to be on my palette. It is indeed a weak pigment, and ultra granulating. It is also sticky and streaky. It's a gorgeous color though and might be worth the trouble for those who have the patience for it or welcome unpredictable results.

Wow, a shocker, Jay admits to liking a pastel! I have the Quin Purple (what a great botanical base for certain flowers), and it makes good shadows in trees. A small tube of Moonglow,. I used it a few times for monochrome value studies, but I never get the color separation either. Maybe if I toss some salt on it. I also have the Amethyst and another Primatek called Purpurite, which is not on their dot cards. It is quite strong, Granulating and beautiful. Very fun to mix with other granulating colors for super granulation. Their cobalt violets have a reputation for being weak, my dot card swatched out almost exactly like yours.

Haha! It felt wrong to say it. The only pastel I ever say good things about is my Holbein lavender 🤣

I ran out to buy a tube of Moonglow when it was touted so highly some years ago, and after swatching it, thought; is that all there is? Bought a set of 12 half pans which included rose of ultramarine and shadow violet that are just okay. IMO the vangogh lavender is every bit as nice as DS. Not a fan of DS purples. I find DaVinci purples and violets more lively.

Have you noticed that the Amethyst has a tiny bit of sparkle? It's very subtle not like mica. I have the W&N cobalt violet and it is also very weak. As far as purples go I mostly use PV23 and PV29.

Cobalt violet is difficult to rewet when dry and has a sticky consistency when fresh out of the tube. I heard other people saying these things and i suppose other brands could be better.

so far I own Wisteria,Rose of ultramarine and moonglow..I am not a fan of moonglow. I feel tricked by the fantasy this paint gave hahaha. Now I find myself fancying Perylene violet and maybe Quin purple. Edit to add: I find that when normal brushes fail to draw out the color separation,a waterbrush will do the trick. But that is still not enough for me to like moonglow!

I think PV49 is the only pigment I've had a problem with so far. It does paint that light; I was disappointed with it. I'm using pans now and I am going to start investing in tubes to make a palette. Can I use the pans along with the tube paints when painting? Thank you!

Permanent violet was made with PR88 Thioindigo violet, before they reformulated it to PR202 and PB29. Aside from that I do love all the purple colours they provide, except the cobalt violets. Cobalt violet is kind of a useless colour, as it has the weakest tinting strength compared to the rest of the colours. It is hard to re-wet, and the colour in the masstone is weak.

I believe that the Daniel Smiths 'Genuine' colors are basically ground up rocks... I may be wrong, but i think this is the reason why there is never a pigment code.
@JayNathanWatercolor
@JayNathanWatercolor 2 жыл бұрын
Yes they are all made from rocks but it seems that other pigments are added (to some or all?) during the manufacturing process to keep the color consistent. Whatever is added is not listed on the tube as Daniel Smith want to keep the manufacturing process secret.
