DC, with all he's been through, seeing his father murdered before his eyes by his grandpa, on THANKSGIVING of all things, the loss of his daughter, most people today would be broken, and yet look at the dude today. I wouldn't say that he is walking it back. Elite athletes are in a special predicament where they perform at a maximum under pressure for a long time. When they are not in it, a very intense but temporary depression comes over them. Once their careers are over they have difficulties adjusting to normal life, similar to ex soldiers but without the PTSD. Normal people aren't really in the same predicament and depression for normal people is much less temporary than what Volk is experiencing. This makes it important to not draw all depressions with the same brush as their severity and solutions can be wildly different. The biggest problem for Volk is what he will do after his career rather than what he should do between camps. This is a very well studied topic even though, unfortunately, most elite athletes don't use those studies to prepare themselves after their careers.
