_Steven Dogooder and the Deeds of Evolhouse_ was always the best of the series to me. Reminds me of the time i ran a magic school style dnd campaign, and literally just had houses Goode, Evel, Bowring, and Naerd. Everyone in the world just knew that house Evel was evil and helping the BBEG. But they just sort of treated it like an unavoidable nuisance. "Ah, that Evel house, always upto their evil mischiefs. Evel be Evel" Everything was super on the nose. Evil student would do this evil monologue in class, and the when the players reacted the teachers would be like "why are you guys overreacting?!" Was so fun

Funny thing is, in a way this is what happened with Snape (and a bunch of other Slitherins I imagine), where he was isolated and bullied as a result of being in the ''evil house'' which ended up pushing him further into the ''loving'' arms of his housemates, where he actually became evil. Treat someone like a monster for no reason, and they'll give you a reason.

I’m a linguist who specializes in the forbidden language, and all he was saying was “Ouchie ouchie go away! Heal up fast and do not stay!” The poor kid was only meaning to help his professor’s morale, but the student with the superiority complex from Sphinxwindow killed him. Sphinxwindow students always think they’re superior to Evolhouse students (Evol being the savior king who freed us from the tyranny of the Sphinxes) that half that deaths in this school is Sphinxwindow students killing Evolhouse students in “self-defense”. Self defense from what? A spell that makes your hair two inches longer? Do you know how many heads have exploded because of overreactions to minor pranks?

@@meris8486 yeah, it can be done, best take on it I can think of offhand is avatar. Literally every wind temple was also a school. But anytime you have unconstrained magic at a school, bad things happen. while a great example of how all magic schools are brutal is "queens of renthia" but mostly because this magic system relies on spirits that have a dual nature of being commanded by certain humans and wanting to kill humans... technically the same problem exists outside the schools so again, its more of a society problem than a school problem at least.

"... Why is *that* not the killing curse?" My feelings about the new game in a nutshell lol So much fuss about "the unforgivable killing curse"; professor we just killed like 50 goblins, some slashed cleanly in half after being frozen solid, threw a couple off a cliff, one got to experience the life of a red barrel before I used his now volatile guts to kill one of his compatriots, I also summoned ancient lighting upon one and he literally just vaporized before my eyes. And it's not like the characters pretend they were just "defeated" or something, everyone constantly rebels in the joy of having killed and the killing potential of the spells is clearly shown, there is literally a Hiroshima-like shadow of the dead student that casted Bombarda for the first time. If anything, Avada Kadabra sounds like the merciful option (ok, rant over)

Naomi Novik's Scholomance handled this really well. No houses. Not even teachers. The school was deadly and full of demons trying to eat the students with a 50% survival rate. But that was okay because the outside world only had a 10% survival rate. (Once wizards reach maturity they're powerful enough the natural threats leave them alone, but until then they're constant targets and the school provides SOME protection for that.) And the main character, a girl prophecized to destroy the world who has insane destructive magic, hates the chosen one. Not because of prophecy or anything... he's just too damn nice.

But so many other spells can be used to kill someone if one gets clever enough. Which is why my magic system is intent based and therefore has a way to see if.... say... a levitation spell was used with intent to drop someone 100 feet onto The concrete lol.
