What rating should the WoTTV show have in your opinion?
@curzon176

Same rating as Game of Thrones i think. It doesn't have the explicit sex, but it has lots of violence and nekkidness

Probably TV-MA. In the earlier seasons, i could see them getting away with a lower ranking, but as it progresses, the intensity of the violence and the use of sex and nudity increases. I also think that they’ll probably steer a little harder into the violence and sex than Robert Jordan did because they’ll want to capitalize on the Game of Thrones market. They’ll probably, in order to minimize the impact of the increased violence on the story, keep it mostly Human vs Trolloch or shadow spawn.

Agree about the Shaido. They definitely outlive their interest and usefulness. I also think that Fain’s role stands a good chance of being cut substantially. I think he’ll be a glorified dark friend that will pop up and probably end up working with the Children but the whole dagger and the evil of Shadar Logoth will be cut from him and start and finish with Mat. Also, down here we say “put the cart before the horse” because a horse pulls a cart and can’t if it is behind the cart... I’ve never heard the barn version...is that supposed to mean you shouldn’t buy a horse before you build a barn to put it in? (I find variations on colloquiums fascinating!)
@tracib.7725

I think they will go “R” and fully embrace the nudity, expand on sex but not expand on the darker elements. They want to attract those who love GoT but also those who found GoT tooooo dark. Their biggest hurdle in audience will be the open and unrestrained use of magic...many people like the idea of magic but it gets to be “too much”. So we’ll be eased in really slowly, it won’t be obvious and then later when the mains are channeling it will be in your face intense.

This has to be done right. If it is, WoT will be the best fantasy TV series to date. I have read the books twice and listened to the audio once. I am beyond hooked. I agree that if we get a good cast and a big budget this will be an instant hit with the masses.

I love that your dad made that connection with the jewish gholem and the trolloc bands having names that are a tip of the hat to other fantasy races. Also as an aside i lived in charleston, sc (where robert jordan is from) and noticed some things that might have influenced him. There is a street in charleston called ogier street. Literally spelled that way and it's been an established street for a very long time. Also a neighborhood in columbia sc called the three rivers (i know it's two) but just thought about how much he pulled from his surroundings and i love seeing these things in real life

Loved hearing from your Dad. I enjoy hearing the point of view of someone who is coming to the story fresh, with a modern take on material that is showing its age in some ways. I also really loved how he immediately challenged your throwaway observation that we the readers follow the protagonists from the time they are 'farmboys to leaders'. A lot of male readers somehow completely miss the fact that this story has always been about the women, and the men are pretty passive participants in a lot of ways at a lot of points in the story. Rand, Mat, and Perrin reluctantly agree to leave the Two Rivers with Moiraine. Egwene and Nynaeve CHOOSE to leave on their own, and Nynaeve does so BY HERSELF. Even badass King Lan of the Lost Cause Nation Of Badasses follows Moiraine's lead. Early in the series, Rand descends into mental illness and self doubt, Mat descends into stupidity-induced addiction and withdrawal, and Perrin descends into crippling social anxiety and toxic relationship drama. Meanwhile Egwene and Nynaeve go to Hogwarts and hunt down evil wizard ladies. It's abundantly clear to me that Robert Jordan intentionally flipped the script, but I'm always amazed at how this still sails over the heads of many readers, mostly young and/or male. It's very telling when I hear young readers talk about 'the three protagonists'-as if Moiraine, Egwene and Nynaeve are just side characters. Frankly, Perrin has always seemed like a side character to me. He takes forever to get any kind of self-confidence, and he basically is just this weird werewolf guy that becomes the sherriff of his hometown or something. He mixes it up with the weird order of religious zealots, but none of that has anything to do with the One Power, the Dragon Reborn, the Last Battle, or much of anything outside of western Andor. He doesn't have much to do with the larger story. Meanwhile side character Egwene becomes a Wizard Queen who challenges a rival Wizard Queen for control of the center of civilization. But Perrin has cool eyes? I guess? And if I live to a hundred, I will never understand why you want to reduce the number of Forsaken for the TV show. The whole point of the Forsaken in the world of Wheel of Time is that there are a lot of them, and they could be anywhere, and not much is known about them outside of legend. Just because several of the Forsaken don’t have a huge impact on the story doesn’t mean that the small part they do play isn’t important. Be’lal was barely there, but he gave Moiraine one of her best moments, and we were introduced to balefire because of him. I wouldn’t want to cut Be’lal. Alas, Netweaver, we barely knew ye, and thanks Moiraine for that lesson in how to handle Forsaken that Rand still doesn't learn until after he almost murders one of his many girlfriends. Moghedien and Asmodean are the unwitting teachers of our protagonists, so even though they are weak and stupid, I wouldn’t want to lose them. Good luck trying to cut either of them, they are quite integral to the story, unless we're just rewriting everything from scratch. Rahvin, Sammael, Demandred, Balthamel, Aginor-who gets cut? And why? Do you lose the Rahvin/Andor plot? Or the Sammael/Illian plot? Maybe there are no Forsaken at the Eye of the World? Maybe Rand just strolls up and grabs the Dragon banner, the Horn of Valere, flips the bird to Ishamael and strolls back to Fal Dara? Obviously none of the female Forsaken can be cut. You can’t pull on those threads without ripping out whole storylines. Even Mesaana and Semirhage are critical to the story, though they have less page time than Lanfear, Moghedien and Graendal. Mesaana is crucial to the White Tower storyline and Semirhage is pretty much the scariest villain of the whole series, and comes closest to winning for the side of the Shadow when she gets Rand in the Domination Band. Do you give that storyline to Graendal? Then who does Rand go after at Natrin’s Barrow? Is the White Tower split Graendal's or Lanfear's or Moghedien's doing? Is the Shadow splitting the White Tower on a part-time basis? Do you replace some of the Forsaken with Black Ajah? What is the point of that, other than to just change something for the sake of changing it? And speaking of Black Ajah, there are scads and scads of Black Ajah in the books, but I don’t hear any calls to cut Temaile Kinderode and Marillin Gemalphin. And what about Joiya Byir, Amico Nagoyin, Chesmal Emry, Ispan Shefar, Falion Bhoda, Jeaine Caide, Galina Casban, Liandrin, Alviarin Friedhen, Elza Penfell, Katerine Alruddin, Careane Fransi, et al.? And lets tack on the list of rank-and-file Darkfriends that we meet in the books, do we start trimming down their numbers, so that it’s ‘easier to keep track’? Do we want it to seem like the Shadow is weak and spread thin? The whole point of the story is that the Shadow is everywhere, and the forces of the Light can be attacked from any quarter at any time. If we go with your idea, then the protagonists will know that they just have to pick off five or six dudes over the course of the series. That really ratchets down the stakes. And we lose lots of really cool moments. If Be’lal and Lanfear get cut, Moiraine is just another Aes Sedai. If Aginor and Balthamel get cut, then Someshta is just a cool CGI easter egg and the first book has no real climax. Personally, I think Aviendha could be cut. She’s just hateful and unpleasant and xenophobic toward wetlanders in the early books. She is a disobedient child that the Wise Ones have to bring in line. Everything about Aviendha is problematic. I find it hard to like her, I find it hard to sympathize with her, and the story of the Maidens of the Spear can easily be given to Sulin. We can also combine Gaul, Bain and Chiad into a single character, don’t you think? See what I did there? You were HORRIFIED that I would want to cut Aviendha or thin the ranks of your beloved Aiel. Well, I guarantee you there are people out there who are just as fond of the individual Forsaken, or the story points they are attached to. So when deciding who and what to cut, I think we need to look to the side plots, like Valan Luca’s circus, Bayle Domon, Basel Gill, the High Lords of Tear, etc. Not culling our main cast of villains. That would be like having an FBI's Three Most Wanted list. As for the rating of the TV show, I think it has to be TV-MA. The polyamory alone requires this. Unless we’re going to cut Rand’s romance smorgasbord, Green Ajah Aes Sedai, and the Aiel sister-wife shenanigans altogether. We also have themes of rape, torture, and the slaughter of innocents and oh yeah, the Last Battle. Do Our Heroes and the Forsaken just play tag? Maybe do some rock-paper-scissors? Do Egwene and Mat and the Great Generals just lecture the enemy about what meanie heads they are, and convince each one to become a Better Person™? PG-13 is just not an option for this material.

I'm always amazed about the scope of your WoT knowledge. I don't think I could pull out names of characters like those without notes. You're right about cutting forsaken. But if they don't get cut, I can see them being back story cut and/or killed abruptly. (like they did to Ser Barristan in GoT ) I also we'll see some of those black ajah characters mentioned above get condensed. One of the limitations of film is the scarcity of time and using it to develop your characters without boring the audience with exposition. Jordan can spend as many pages as he needs to develop characters. The show runners will need to to show us with a few scenes, dialogue, framing and music. Don't worry though, I'll be the one kvetching to my husband about every character that's left out and ranting about it at work the next day. 😂

@@LightHalcyon I think that Rafe Judkins will either not resurrect Aginor, Balthamel, and Lanfear after they are killed, or he'll actually give Osan'gar and Cyndane something worthwhile to do. Only Aran'gar seems to do anything with her new lease on life. And I think the Graendal/Hessalam story beat needs to just not happen. Just let Graendal be Graendal.

What are some of your Dad’s favourite book series? Cause he seems like a wise man
@marktgreene
@marktgreene 5 жыл бұрын
Lord of the Rings (duh!), Fritz Leiber's "Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser" (big influence on D&D), Asimov's "Foundation" trilogy (+1), Robert Heinlein's loosely connected books and short stories best represented by "The Past Through Tomorrow", and I like old, juvenile, pulp fun like "Doc Savage" and "John Carter of Mars". My favorite series of all time are neither sci-fi nor fantasy: #1 is Sherlock Holmes, and a close #2 is historical fiction--Patrick O'Brien's 20-volume "Master & Commander". I'm sure I'm forgetting some that I dearly love. For current sci-fi, it's hard to beat Taylor's Bob-Verse trilogy, beginning with "We are Legion (We are Bob)". This is a real stretch: I love the Arthurian legend, which was originally a collection of stories. Reading the best of the King Arthur books might be considered sort of a series, right? kinda? Or not. (I have read: "Le Morte Darthur", "The Once and Future King", "Mists of Avalon", "Idylls of the King", "The Crystal Cave", "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court". Two very different but wonderfully weird movies: "Excalibur" and "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". A pretty good Broadway musical: "Camelot". (There are many other Arthurian books I have not read, including read Tolkien's "The Fall of Arthur". Have any of you? Recommended?)

I agree with Mr. Greene, WOT doesn't have the same level as world building that Tolkien's middle earth has. In terms of nations with diversity in culture and dress, WOT shines, but in terms of actual history of the world, and stories from the past, i think Tolkien's world is superior.

Hi Daniel. You questioned what we disagreed with most on another video. I realize this is the wrong video for it, but listening to it reminded me. Your take on the Red Ajah. You have come across in many of your videos with the attitude that the Red Ajah is necessary and performed a vital role. I couldn't disagree more. The Red Ajah reminds me most of a corrupt police force who specializes in using excessive force. Sure there are two good examples of quality Red sisters in Pevara and Silviana, but they are the exceptions that prove the rule. Almost every other Red we see is either secretly black or involved in the vileness and unrepentant about it. I suspect that if you polled most Red sisters, they'd have supported what was done at the Black's behest, at least until they knew who actually was behind it.
