I love that Daniel is so open and upfront - there’s no deception, pretension, or fakeness with him, which is rare in today’s society.

I'm from Brazil and I traveled alone on 15/05/2003 400Km to see Silverchair in São Paulo. It is to this day the best performance I have ever seen live. I remember being still outside the auditorium in line and listening to Daniel rehearsing Emotion Sickness and getting goosebumps. I hope you keep improving mentally every day Daniel. I'm sure you will get better every day.

Time becomes such a strange thing as we get older. As I watch this interview, I'm 42 years old. I was 15 in 1995 when Silverchair blew up. Frogstomp & Freakshow are part of the soundtrack to my youth. So, It's strange to watch this interview with Daniel in this new world with the memory of the old one in my minds eye.

im no expert in music, but I would argue that Dan IS a modern genius (as opposed to artists like Mozart that are more classic/historical geniuses) Every single piece of music dan has ever been involved in is absolutely amazing in my opinion and far from simple. The way he is able to envision songs and manifest feelings and thoughts into a song is extremely impressive; not to mention the meanings and metaphors in the lyrics and how the music itself is constructed. Every single detail is perfected and crafted to sound a specific way for a specific reason. AND all of his music is so different, each album/band has a completely different sound, and only a genius could successfully write such good music in a range of genres. A genius is someone who surpasses expectations and dan does that with every single song he's ever released. in my opinion, dan is definitely an artistic genius.

This interview was an eye-opener for me. I was so drawn to Silverchair in my youth, and still appreciate the creative depth with which Daniel revealed any degree of pain or observation through lyrical content, vocal dynamics, and musical composition. The sheer power was formidable; music and expression= paramount. His cool, honest, and humble expressions throughout this interview (and others I've seen), considering the adversity that has sometimes peppered the journey, are the personification of grace. As a Psychologist (and creative person), I am truly moved by Daniel's self-awareness and candor about his struggles with mental health etc. Any of us who, by sheer will, understanding, and/or catastrophy, have learned to keep going despite darkness's blatant tailgating through the corridors of discontent - real or imagined - and have found a way to meet ourselves, learn, and transform. Conversely, whenever any of my clients have responded positively to treatment, and counseling sessions progress for the ultimate better, my elation for them is boundless. It is like a phoenix rising in self-actualization from the ash and rubble, becoming the calm bright space of refuge in all the chaos, & saying "F it, I'm the mariner of my own ship." This is how I see Daniel, and I adore him for it.

Ok, lots to process and digest here. The intro was well fitting. I agree when Dan said that it was unfair leading fans to believe that the band would get back together when it wasn't the case. Back in the day I thought it was so cool that Silverchair was performing the same night as MJ (since I'm a massive fan of both, imagine how stoked I was). That night was magical! I also didn't know that you guys were the youngest to perform at SNL (which is a huge compliment to your talent). I can only imagine how overwhelming this journey must have been to you guys. Being famous that young is no cup of tea, and that's why I'm so proud of the man you are today. You overcame neglect, BS, celebrity world, tabloids, murder-blaming (this last one hit me hard. That was SO unfair since you were just a teenager) and yet, you never stop being creative and gifting us with your beautiful art even though you were dealing with health problems, anxiety & depression during all of this. That's why you are a warrior. "Future Never" is a masterpiece. An open letter from a brilliant man saying farewell to the past, living in the present and moving towards the future. So happy to finally meet Purple girl. She's badass! Must be protected at all costs. Absolutely loved that version of "Freak". I can't wait to watch "WITFNH". Rasmus is a talented kid. Thank you Daniel for open your house and your heart to all of us. Act 2 made me admire you even more (is that even possible?)...guess it is. Looking forward to the last episode.

I went to the Daniel John's exhibition on the weekend. WOW it was so amazing, best day ever and so so much stuff. I really loved seeing his school work, reports and itineraries from when he was touring, his teddy and first toy. All the things you don't often get to see from your favourite artist. ❤️❤️

Growing up with Silverchair and being lucky enough to attend ‘Across the Great Divide’ tour in Brisbane back in 2007, it’s safe to say I’m a Silverchair fan. But as I’ve grown and heard the struggles Daniel has been through in his life, now is the time I feel like his life is more relatable to me. As someone who has suffered anxiety, panic and dissociation myself since a child, I feel grateful knowing that no matter who you are or what your circumstance, there are always people who are going through something similar and that no one is ever truly alone in their struggles. I commend your openness and vulnerability Dan, and wish you all the best for the future. Just as I am not alone, you are not alone.

Havent heard about daniel johns in forever, I'm 38 now and have been a huge silverchair fan since frogstomp. Im glad these videos popped up on my KZfaq feed, dude is such a genuine person and such a king soul.

Hi Daniel, I haven't lead your life and you neither mine, though we share a connection. Never met and yet you speak to me in such a meaningful way that I understand. I am 42 years old Daniel and I recently discovered I have Asperger's. The trauma you have shared with the world about losing your childhood and growing up in a fish bowl is real, but on-top of this there is an understanding of yourself that most people don't ever come close to seeing, feeling and experiencing. this for me is my Autism. People often comment that you are a genius. I see life in terms of layers, textures, energy, reflections, metaphors. I would encourage you to explore this path Daniel. If you do have autism it will give you a sense of freedom and you will be able to let go, process and allow yourself to feel safe enough to continue growing and leaning. Peace out Nathan

I stumbled upon this after pulling up a Silverchair song I hadn’t heard in a while. I didn’t realize all these things had happened. First, I’m so glad you’re still making music. Second, thank you for opening up about this. As someone who also deals with depression and anxiety, I can relate to so much of what you’ve experienced. I, too, play music and something you said really resonates with me bc I go through it… you said that music is your escape but you also find that when you’re in that world, chaos can ensue. I know those weren’t the exact words and maybe that’s just what I took from it but I felt it. When making music I feel myself going down a rabbit hole that I can’t always find my way back out of. I was 16 when I first heard Silverchair and now at 44, I’m so happy to be hearing you sing again! I hope you’re doing well, lots of love to you!

I have so much respect for this man. I consider everything he puts out here to be such a gift to all of us who do respect and appreciate him. I have to say, listening to these, and reading what he has had to say, especially recently, feels distressing yet so comforting. Everything he says makes perfect sense to me. I feel this so hard. I also agree with him, and don't understand the strange obsession with people wanting to be a "celebrity". Just the thought of it gives me anxiety. Daniel was a kid when start to play, sing and compose lyrics. The media made many comparisons with other bands, almost as silverchair was plagiarism. It never was. But I think for a boy it was difficult to understand this and ignore these judgments. we were all insecure teenagers, it must have been hard to hear it. And my God, you were a kid, a very talented kid! I always admired you as an artist but now I admire you as a person, you ended the band because you were being toxic. It takes courage to do this and you did. Your fans love your music, but we love you first. Please put your health at first place, our admiration for you will never change.

90’s was the renaissance of music. Neon Ballroom of Silverchair is the best album in my personal opinion. From the orchestral sound of Emotion Sickness to powerful voice of Daniel in Spawn Again and Anthem for the year 2000; heartbreaking sounds of Black Tangled Heart and Ana’s Song; and relaxing last song of Steam Will Rise, it is such a masterfully crafted album, Genius. Rock, Metal, Alternative, and other genres became the voices for the rest of us from primary, secondary, and tertiary schools. It made the majority of millennials strong against daily personal hardships and battles. I’m in late 30’s now with a family and children. My playlists in my smartphone still composed of Silverchair, KoRn, RATM, Slipknot, Slayer, Oasis, Rammstein, Disturbed, Deftones, Limp Bizkit, Orgy, Nirvana, and Alice in Chains. My kids loves the 90s song, it’s our music when we’re in the road trips for vacations. Thank you Daniel Johns and Silverchair for all the inspirations in your songs.

I found silverchair in MTV back when MTV was about music. First video and song i heard was freak. I was 13-14 just getting into music. I thought it was awesome to see 3 teens making music and touring and being on mtv. I wanted to be in a band, write music, and tour, but i got in a band wrote music but never toured... I struggle with some mental health issues, and it sucks. I think i have overcome some of those issues after becoming a father but a lot of those struggles still linger .. Love your music Daniel, you definitely are up there in the influential artists of the 90s- early 2000's... Keep your head up and moving forward

Wow just WOW The one thing that struck me during this episode (well two actually) 1 was how humble Daniel has been throughout his life from a young man on SNL to now he has always felt like he didn't belong, like he wasn't good enough, to me that speaks volumes on how amazing of a man he is today, to go through all this as a child and to be on top but still be Daniel, its inspiring and sad, I wish he could look in the mirror and see what we see when we look at him, genuine and talented and beautiful on the inside as well as out ❤️ But also 2 he's so raw and truthful and you can see that it makes him anxious and uncomfortable bearing it to us by the way he plays with his hair when he's uncomfortable or moves in his seat but regardless of how hard it is for him to be in the spotlight talking about his life and himself he does it, he tells his story his way, from someone who has witnessed (from the outside) the rise and struggle of Daniel Johns I just want you to know I am so proud of you and so inspired by you, you have been through so much pain and still here you are ❤️ Beautiful.

I'm from Brazil, I don't know how to speak English, but I would still like to express myself. At the time Silverchair became famous, my mother was a teenager, so I didn't have the opportunity to experience that moment, but I grew up listening to their music because of my mother, my uncles. When I became a teenager (I'm from 1998) the band came to an end and that makes me very sad. I would like to have the opportunity to go to one of your shows. I loved the heavy rock tones on the first few albums. Diorama is my favourite album. I'm a fellow Aussie SA born. I can't imagine the pressures of been a teen rock star at that age. Silverchair was a huge part of my childhood, I used to have Frogstomp and Freakshow on either side of a cassette and listen on repeat. It's bittersweet though, to know how much Daniel suffered for his art. Eternally grateful for the influence on my musical journey through life.

I grew up on post-grunge and nu-metal music in the early 2000’s. I remember seeing Silverchair in MTV and i liked the song (can’t remember witch one) but it didn’t stick with me, however the band name did. I’m 35 now, been a musician since i could walk basically, and just listen to Diorama for the first time. This album is one of few iv’e heard in my life that i would call a masterpiece. I hope i get to see Silvechair live at least once in my lifetime.

I was front row at Silverchair's performance in Atlanta Ga at Rockfest (and crazily enough ended up on camera for the pro shot footage aired on MTV for that festival and many years later my young son was watching the performance on KZfaq and all of a sudden he kept seeing me like full screen numerous times several of those during Emotion Sickness and he started legit SCREAMING "MOMMMY MOMMY YOU ARE FAMOUS" LMFAO hes still convinced because that camera man kept filming me and caught me and one of the band members kinda talking here and there that I was some super important person or something yall i about died laughing im like nah kid thats just how it is at rock shows when your fron row😂.

First saw you guys at reading festival 1999 and I was 16 , went to the festival just to see you guys . I am now 40 and still love your music ! Hope you get something from these interviews Daniel , keep smiling .

Talking away from the mental health issues I can't believe he struggled to find a drummer for this project. I would have done it in a second and I've been playing professionally for over 25 years, a lot of my personal issues have definitely mirrored his pain a lot. But man - I just don't understand how you couldn't find a player. The way Daniel approached the drums was very Bonham - which also reminded me of the way Ben Gillies approached his playing as well. Playing behind the beat with intention and passion - I hope you and Ben can sometimes mend your relationship at some time. But hey - glad you are still performing and writing and pushing forward.

Seems as though Daniel has properly had the chance to think about how / why / what his past has been, and to come to terms with the good, and not so good aspects of this. That’s definitely not easy to do, and it’s a lot to get your head around. I think the attitude of not putting constraints on anything ( such as future live performance etc ) is a good idea. What will be, will be. No need to be having a busy mind, and overthinking these type of things. The upcoming movie with Rasmus looks to be really fantastic. First of all the story sequence with purple girl felt like the start of a theatrical production that left me wanting to see more. Secondly I again appreciate your raw honesty. Even though it’s difficult, you are so open with your pain & anxieties & I felt that. I especially found it so relatable when you said “If the future never fucked me up”. Mr Daniel Johns thank u for allowing us to be with u on this amazing journey of yours I just felt I needed to say how much your art has helped me your music has always made me feel alive and in reality as I suffer with ptsd anxiety and major depression and at a point I was isolating myself but now I’m trying so hard to challenge myself and leave the house and Daniel u have helped me do that I brought my tickets for the exhibition and I’m going this Saturday and if it wasn’t for your exhibition I would be struggling to see life outside my home so I owe u a big thank u and thank u so so much for opening up about your struggles so I want to send u so much love and support ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

You know, Ben is right, Daniels songs are simple, when you go to Bens music page you can see what his influence was. Daniel has lyrics and voice, & it seems Ben could direct atmosphere. There is so much hurt. I hope they can move past it one day. They are pieces of a musical puzzle that just fit when all put together. They make good music in their own right, but together is where the magic really is. Great interview series. 🙂
