Aurora Australis: Island, 28 May 2017, Tasmania

The aurora was caused by the arrival of a slow CME from a filament eruption on the surface of the sun. Magnetic field was up to a strength of 21nT in daytime Australia, but still sustaining well over 15nT and a direction of -13nT by sundown. Various auroral types were seen on this night.
Apologies for the foggy lens. Need to invest in a lens warmer.

You can see it along the horizon in australia (tasmania) and new zealand during some of the stronger geomagnetic storm events. Otherwise antarctica if you have access :) sometimes it can be seen further north but it has to be a really good aurora.

This was taken in Hillwood Tasmania. I wouldn't recommend it as it is not the safest place for a tourist to be!

Is it possible to observe this from spirit of tasmania? I'll be visiting tasmania soon but sadly only for 3 days 2 nights. One of the night is on the Spirit of Tasmania ferry and the other maybe on mt kuringai. Is this ok or is there any better place to observe them?

Hi Dawa, the odds of seeing the aurora is low in January. The aurora depends on solar wind, material that comes out of the sun. Currently we are in a low period of solar activity. Plus you can only see aurora at night, and it is summer in January, meaning longer days and shorter nights. You also have to check the weather, moonlight, and bushfire warnings at the time. I didn't :) but I did stay from sunset till midnight that evening, which would've been about 5 hours or so. Can't believe it's already been a year...

It looks truly amazing. I really want to see the aurora. Do you think I can see it in August? I read that September is the best time but it happens all year around, right?

The aurora depends on solar activity, which follows 11 year cycle. We're currently near the minimum so there is only very small aurora, not visible from tasmania, and the next maximum will be in around 6 years. You'll be able to see it only when the sky is clear and dark too, so you have to consider the moon, the cloud, and daylight hours. Also have to move to a dark area outside of the cities where there is too much light.

Thank you for the useful information Daniel. So the next maximum will be in 2023. I was concerning about the safety. Having to be in a dark area away from the city when I'm traveling alone (I can't drive) is not very safe. Maybe I'll do it next year or so, in Tasmania or NZ :)

What's the best month and where in tasmania to see aurora? We plan to go there this winter.

Hi Jouie, technically the aurora is based on sun activity in its 11 year cycle. Currently we are 1-2 year past solar minimum so activity is not so frequent nor strong yet. You also need to have clear skies and ideally no moon. Statistically, spring and autumn has the highest aurora sighting rates, but you get clear skies often in winter (depending also on the current la nina effects though). You would want to go somewhere that does not have much light pollution. I run a group on Facebook called the Southern Hemisphere Aurora Group, you may find out more from us there!

Could you share as to what devices or gadgets one should carry around so as to observe the aurora much better?

There isn't really any device that can help you personally see the aurora better, but you can have a good camera and lens with you to help you do long exposures to see that the aurora is there. Our eyes are not great instruments for seeing colour in the dark, but our cameras are able to do a little better by exposing the scene for longer.

Not at all, the aurora depends on the sun which follows an 11 year cycle. Best chances is when you have no cloud, no moon and long nights, which means it's also cold.

@@GreenXGaming that is not a planet it is Achernar which is the brightest star in the constellation Eridanus, and at magnitude 0.45 is the 9th brightest star in the night sky. It lies 57 degrees below the celestial equator at the southern tip of the River Eridanus, visible only to those who live below 32 degrees north latitude. It is easily seen only from the tropics and southern hemisphere; observers in the southernmost parts of the United States may get a glimpse of Achernar low on the horizon during the month of October.
