I've played the Grunfeld for decades in OTB chess, starting as a 1400(USCF) player and progressing to 2000. It was the first opening where I learned not by rote memorization, but by knowing the "general principles," as well as the recurring tactical themes if White errs. It worked very well against opponents rated up through 1900, since the Grunfeld is not that common, few players, below a certain rating, had a prepared "pet-line" against it. However, once you begin to face opponents that are close or beyond expert strength, you will face prepared lines, and there are 7 or 8 different lines with concrete variations that you must know to survive. And the problem is that with so may options to White's avail, you may go many games (even many years) where you face a certain critical line. It's a lot of work to stay up on the theory, especially whey you become known as a "Grunfeld player," and others start gunning for you.

20:10 there was this moment when you suddenly looked excited about something in the position. I paused the video and found the tactic, but I only did the easy part. What's impressive is the ability to find all the tactical ideas in the position at any time, specially when your bishop is hanging. Looks simple enough but i wouldnt have come up with that tactic myself in a million years. To see the bigger picture and be constantly alert for tactical motives is definately a game changer

Interesting improvement in less than a month...He must be watching these speedruns and grasping really fast

Daniel Had two back to back brilliant moves this game! First discovering the idea at 20:09, and playing Nxd5 at 21:44, and Rxc4 at 24:11

Wow what a crazy complicated middlegame. When I put the game jnto Stockfish, it even mentioned that Nd4 is much strongwr than Nb4 because after Qd3, Nxf3 Qxf3, you don’t jave to move the bishop on e6! You could slam down Nxd5 and it still works because the knight on a3 is really vulnerable. Also, in the game you took on g7 without considering a lot of other options, which seemed like a very practical decision, but amazingly Stockfish suggests to go Rc7 with a discovery on b3 first. I have no idea what’s going on in that line honestly… That would have been a total engine move if you found that I think

this opponent was booked out of their mind. They didn't just know theoretical lines that far, they knew theoretical lines that far after playing a transpositional knight opening. A real reader.

This is why I don’t like playing the Grunfeld as a 1500. Very dense theory and you get sharp positions that players like this one thrive in where there’s often only one or two good moves to choose from so they play with almost perfect accuracy even against a super GM. I’d rather be passive in a QID or Pirc and wait for my opponent to make a positional blunder which are very common at this level.

"A position from which there are five or six different viable continuations." That's really only a partial definition. Other factors that make a position a tabia are 1) it's in the opening phase, 2) it's a well-known and well-studied position, 3) (typically) its five or six viable continuations are named sub-variations of the opening.

I always thought that our response to d4 would be King's Indian since Danya recommends every single time. What changed and what is the upside of Grunfeld over King's Indian ? As far as I know King's Indian provides much more king side attacks and exciting games.

At 38:50 I think I see a forced win, Rh2+ followed by Rcg2+, and then black can force the exchange of rooks by playing Rh1+. After the exchange black can play Rb6 and it is adio mare.

I think his oponent is a 2000+ player who created a second account just to be able to participate in this speedrun. I mean he has played a total 37 games and two of them are against Daniel, what are those odds? Not that I am saying there's anything terribly wrong with this, but I think it explains the high level chess we see here.

This opponent was definitely a higher-rated opponent on an alternate account and streamsniping. The account barely has any games, and hasn't been active at all since this game.

I'm pretty sure this opponent is also behind the closed account dw987678. This account was created same day as the account used in this speedrun game, and the very first game was between these two accounts. After 7 games it was closed due to violating Fair Play policy. Im not sure if he's cheating though, it could also be a skilled player just Trolling, creating fake accounts so he can be matched up against Daniels speedrun games. But then playing legit games. EDIT: And he probably also has the accounts voicey04 and Specticly.

Genuine question, what is going on with the opponents timer at 42:30? It kept increasing by about 10 seconds. Like what om earth is that? I know latency is a thing but why is it increasing more than what he had previously? I'd appreciate somebody helping me understand this.

hmm this 3loveisintheair3 character was registered on the 24th of december 2022 (i always freak out with things like that ) ... he looks a bit too strong to be honest. But if he is dodgy ... he certainly doesn't cheat all the way through. It was a relatively simple game in some ways but he really responded well in all critical moments. MAybe it is paranoia.
