History in 3D

2 жыл бұрын

We invite you to expore our 3D reconstruction of famous baths of Caracalla - one of the most magnificent and enormous buildings of ancient Rome. During the 13 minutes we will walk around outside and inside, and visit the most interesting locations - open swimming pool, cold, warm and hot baths, as well as enjoy walking in the gardens outside.
Our goal is to create the most extensive, detailed and accurate virtual 3D reconstruction of the Eternal City. And this reconstruction is one of the most important parts of it. We're presenting the 2.0 edition (the 1.0 was long ago, in 2012), and I hope we have done much improvement in accuracy and realistic details of the baths. However, it is not the final result for sure, we will be improving this 3D reconstruction further, correcting something, adding details, according with the new data investigations.

I have visited the remains of the Baths of Caracalla and found them to be magnificent and extremely impressive. This reconstruction puts some flesh on the bones and really shows off what incredible designers, architects and builders the Romans were. Even if the images of the wall coverings here are not completely accurate, they still give an idea of what the Baths would have looked like.

That's Roman architecture for you, they don't fail to impress and leave you awestruck. Style and aesthetics are key to its success. The golden ratio, which is used in ancient classical architecture is akin to Feng Sui, I reckon, since it looks and feels naturally balanced. Also, the bold and monumental style reflects Roman confidence, dominance, ability, and most of all, power. Architecture is ideal propaganda, even if it's subliminal.

Many many thanks for the making of these films; I went to see the Baths of Caracalla on july 2019 . No words to explain the feelings , almost take our breath away. It helps our immagination about the Ancient Rome, which comes mainly from books ,and every writer has his own way to describe things.

It's the lap of luxury. It's hard to believe that it was built of that much granite, marble, and square blocks and that it's so dilapidated today. Can you imagine how much it was cost to build that today?
@heliboy8762
@heliboy8762 Жыл бұрын
Probably couldn't be built at any cost today. The craftsmen, materials, and design sense simply don't exist on the scale that would be required. Then think about what it would take to recreate the entire central civic area of Rome.

The buildings of Ancient Rome did not decay. They were ruined by their being scavenged for building materials to build churches and basilicas for the new religion of Christianity. Pity.

Absolutely, totally and utterly astonishing, what was it that prompted Caracalla to build this magnificent complex? This installation was for the use of the Roman people and one might think Caracalla was civic minded and benevolent. He wasn't. He had five thousand people slaughtered in one afternoon while touring North Africa for criticism directed at him for murdering his brother Geta after Caracalla used his mother to unknowingly lure him into a meeting to ostensibly talk about sharing power. Instead Caracalla produced a hidden knife and stabbed his brother to death in sight of their mother. All of Rome was aware of this and perhaps in expiation of this crime he built the undeniably magnificent Baths of Caracalla.

@@lornacouillard7549 I honestly don't think anyone is hiding the fact that the Romans were brutal and murderous, especially the emperors. I mean, the Colosseum was a slaughterhouse. Making beautiful masterpieces does not negate anything. Even the "good" emperors were not saints, it's just the nature of society back then, kill or be killed.

@@dannyhernandez265 When Caracalla's father the former emperor Septimius Severus was sick and dying Caracalla asked the physicians treating his father to poison him to hasten his taking of power. They didn't. He had them all executed. However he never moved against the Christians, probably because he knew they weren't a threat.

Very impressive tour with such exact artistry! It's easy to escape into the time period with your beautiful representation that speaks a thousand words! How did they create such perfect and highly polished columns? Were all the statues gold leafed? Such beautiful sculptures, everything! I imagine to create such perfect columns they must have had some kind of amazing lathe or turning method.
