😂 🇩🇰 I won’t ever say that learning Danish was easy for me, mostly because I have not learned Danish, but taking Danish lessons was fun. Learning the compound words and how funny and literal they are when translated into English is one of the best parts of learning Danish. It’s also nice to get a three-for-one boost to your Danish vocabulary! Danes and their efficiency - it’s a thing of beauty.
Here are a few of my favorite compound words that have to do with WATER. Ironically, water is a word that I, and many people from Philadelphia, don’t say the same way as other English-speakers (even though I have slowly beat the Philly accent out of myself while living abroad).
If you’re Danish, or moved to Denmark and started learning the language, what are some of YOUR favorite compound words? What “edition” should we make next? 🤩

OH, and I guess the origin of dåb is "dip" but the current definition may differ - sorry, I'm not an etymologist (but I'm sure this will create some comment-Karens) and hopefully everyone else just enjoys the video

Back when my brother in law had just moved to Denmark from New Zealand, he only knew a few words in Danish but enough to get some context. One summer day he went to mow the lawn and while we has add it my sister yelled "pas på vandslangen!"(watch out for the water "snake"), to avoid him destroying the hose. But the image those words had given him was completly different, so he went into panic mode.

A vandmand or waterman are those harmless jellyfish. The stingy ones are brandmand or fireman. Køleskab -> cooling cupboard, or fridge Flyvemaskine -> flying machine, or plane Hovedpude -> head pillow, or pillow for bed Håndværker-> hand worker, or carpenter Dyrelæge-> animal doctor, veterinarian Skrivebord-> writing table, desk Spisebord-> eating table, dining table And honestly my favourite: farmor/farfar/mormor/morfar-> dadmom/daddad/mummum/mumdad, instead of just "grandma" you say moms mom. And sort of the same thing exists for uncles and aunts where your fathers brother is farbror, his sister is faster(far and søster contracted), and moms brother is morbror, and moms sister is moster (mor and søster together).

‘Spray bath’ and ‘baby-dipping’ are now two of my favourite words 😂 - I kinda want to go so far as to re-translate them back into Danish … so it’s ’sprøjtebad’ and ‘børne-døpning’ from now on 😅
@Dannyboy314
@Dannyboy314 Жыл бұрын
Okay, I can go with it because it's funny. Yeah, maybe in old Danish, "dåb" was used as dipping. But today, "dåb" is only used to refer to being babtised. The Danish word for dipping, is "dyppe".

I both love and hate Danish. On one hand, danish words are either very similar to English or completely different. And pronunciation scares me. I’m too nervous to speak Danish in Denmark even though I’m Danish-Australian and have been surrounded by the culture for my entire life, I can’t speak fluently anymore and Danes can be brutal tbh

So is English to a large degree, but you have a lot more words of Latin origin to camouflage it somewhat. So when you "survive" ( litt. "on-live"), we "overleve" ( litt. "over-live ), when you "ex-amine", we "undersøge" ( "under-seek"), when you "ex-aggerate" ( "out-of-push "), we "over-drive" [ou-er-dreev-e], and when you "per-suade", we "over-tale" ( "over-talk ") etc.
