Dan Lok I heard the story of the Emperor Qian Long as well, however, I was told that the gesture was one bent finger so that the position resembled a kneeling person. In effect, it was a kow tow symbol. Nice video. I also have eaten with many Chinese from Guangdong. At the end of the meal, they would have the wife eat all the remaining food. She would literally stuff all the food in her mouth eventhough she had already had her fill. It seemed like torture to me. Why is this done? Thanks Nick Mirante NY

Also, how would you handle a food allergy?.. I have pretty severe food allergies so I generally make it a point to eat before a dinner meeting... then politely say that I am still full from eating beforehand and only eat something inexpensive and light.

1. If you’re right handed, make sure to place your left hand on the dining table OR use your left hand to hold the rice bowl up when eating, vise versa. 2. It’s impolite to place your elbow on the dining table. 3. Use both hands to hold the drinks when you are cheering with elders and/or superiors. Also, cheer the tip of your drinking glass slightly below your elders and superiors’ drinking glass for showing respect.

As one of the youngest in my Chinese family, I always felt like I was constantly pouring tea to my left and right and serving food to my left and right all throughout dinner. It just feels right to do that out of respect. Can you overdo it in a business setting?

Though I’ve been busy with work and am now catching up with your videos it’s great to see such dramatic improvement (not only the hilarious opening but the subtle music to keep pace with the feel of the video). To what you asked, I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I️ actually didn’t know any of these cultural “dos and don’ts” of the Chinese. Having a Mexican background I learned American customs but am definitely fascinated by Chinese culture. I️ look forward to learning more, as always.

I came here because i was wondering what the standard table manners are in china. When on a holiday in a hotel we where staying a full bus of chinese tourists stopped to eat there. It was all you can eat buffet, but the chinese people only took all the lobster and rise. There was no lobster left for other guests. The middle of theyr table there was a mountain of half eaten lobster. Eating. They all shuffle the chair backwards, hang over the plate or cup and then steady keep shoveling the food in with the spoon. Slurping, burping trowing food everywhere. Is that normal? 😂

I had a blast!!!! They were so impressed with my presentation that they accept the offer.... Like you said Dan Deal or business is sealed at dinner table..... With a Tea Ceremony😯😯😯😯😯😯😯 I remember some etiquette but i learned alot as well!!!! I literally busted out laughing when the guy on the end place his chopsticks directly into bowl of 🍚 rice!!!! LOL😆😆😆😅😅😅😅😅😅 Dan and the lady next to him said" No! No! No!😯😯😯😯😯 They almost freaked out about that incident!!!! And the Chicken Head!!!!😆😯😯😯😯😯

It is also good etiquette to avoid loud noises with your mouth and be sloppy with your food or eat too much as if there is no tomorrow Also it might not look good if you do not eat at all or look disgusted and disappointed with the meal offered. In general food preference is very very personal so it stands to reason that some people may not be satisfied

Dan Lok Oh i think it would be really useful! I study Chinese language and culture in my own country, Italy, and I spent six months in China to improve my skills. My dream is working with Chinese businessmen. But in China I had some difficulties because I didn't know how to refuse something in a polite way. For example, I'm not able to drink so much and I have some allergies to food, but for Chinese people this is not very easy to understand. Thank you so much. I'm waiting for your next video 😊

I wish my non -Chinese friends wouldn’t pile up food. Just eat one thing and then serve yourself something else. Also we generally don’t pass things but ask to be served a portion of something too far to reach. And please never start by taking photos. Its gauche.

2:33 very rude of Dan Lok interrupting the lady during her explanation. Did not like this and closed the video. Was ok until that, why try to teach polite manners if you do not have them yourself. That surely bothered me.

More info for the incense stuff: three sticks of incense is for general prayer (for deities and God), while two sticks of incense is exclusively used for praying deceased people. That’s why it’s highly prohibited to stick your chopsticks into your rice bowl, it’s like giving prayer for the dead which is really inappropriate in formal dinner.

Don't blow your nose on the tablecloth. Don't provide mismatched chopsticks. Don't flick unwanted morsels of food at your neighbor. If an elder farts, try not to laugh or giggle. If someone tries to sneak something from your plate, don't stab his or her hand with a fork; a slap will do.

I am Chinese 1. I can serve a dish many times, but each time it needs to be less. 2. I can't eat with my elders. 3. I won't hold the dishes when the dishes are almost used up. 4. I won't hold the meat all the time. 5. Cannot insert chopsticks. 7. During the meal, someone toasts and you do not refuse, you can lick the wine

Don't jab your chopsticks into the hands of your neighbor. Don't throw food around; food-fights are wasteful and contrary to Chinese respectabilities. Don't use chopsticks to swipe food from your neighbor when he's not looking. Don't raise one buttcheek and fart loudly. Don't make jokes about your neighbor's farts. Don't put your feet on the table. Don't watch porn on your cell phone. Don't wipe your mouth on the table cloth or curtains. Don't pick your teeth with the little sugar/saccharin envelopes. Unless you are the senior person at the table, don't make a fuss if the restroom stinks. If you're a man over 60, you can safely flirt with the waitress, telling her how pretty she is or asking when she goes off duty. But don't grab or grope the waitress. Women have more privilege when it comes to flirting, by the way.

According to the development of civilization, it was very late to make forks and knives to eat food in Europe, that is to say, there was only one truly civilized nation in the world until 1000 AD → Han people! Because there was no restaurant etiquette in the world at that time, most people ate with their hands, except the Chinese!
