Nice to see this list include the animated movies, there's so many good ones that often get overlooked. When I first saw it, I was surprised Batman VS TMNT worked so well, but it's definitely one of my favorites. The crossover comics that the movie is based on are also surprisingly great, definitely recommend checking those out. I really need to go back and rewatch some of the live action ones, but for the animated movies, Under The Red Hood has gotta be my favorite. I've also heard of Batman Ninja, but never ended up watching it. After this video, I might have to check it out!

LFG!! My favorite critic reviewing all Batman movies! Mask of the phantasm is my favorite Batman movie! I rewatched it the other day and I still love it. The opening music to that movie is brilliant.

I think that if Flashpoint Paradox and Assault on Arkham get to be included in this list, then Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths should have also earned a spot. Maybe my memory of it is skewed, but Batman played in MAJOR role in it, and honestly his scenes are the only ones that I remember from the movie.

Batman Ninja is such an inspired pick! It shows how Batman can be adapted in several forms and storylines, while still retaining the true essence of the characters in that universe! Def a top 10 pick for me as well.

Dan Murrell is the hero we don’t deserve! Impressive job going way below the surface to plumb the width and depth they have taken this character. And I think that’s the thing about Batman…he is singular in ways, but also malleable in so many ways.

Your countdown is great! The Dark Knight is phenomenally constructed, with a tour-de-force performance from Heath Ledger, but my favorite Batman film is Batman Begins (I haven't seen The Batman yet) because, in addition to the psychological horror elements, I love that film's story of an individual who learns how to use their trauma as a force to protect and uplift others.

Great list Dan, glad you choose your own favourites instead of claiming some sort of objective ranking like some other creators have. The passion for these films is clear, I hope this video does well and you can continue to do great long form content.

Fun fact: Three years after doing batman: year one, Ben Mckenzie would go on to play James Gordon in the TV series Gotham which focuses on Gordon's early days in GCPD. The show also tackles the origins of other famous batman characters including the ever changing complex origin of the Joker.

After this week (gestures to the world), I needed this video so much. An hour of pure Batman joy that was just a delight. I agree with a lot of your list, and will definitely check out some of the animated ones I've missed. I'm not sure what to do with Hush and Long Halloween. I largely enjoyed them, but they veered away from the beats I know/love from the comic. I need to rewatch them sometime and try to take them more on their own terms. Mask of the Phantasm is still incredible, and I didn't even see it much as a kid. It's just that great. And I'm glad i'm not the only one disappointed by Year One.

Love the Nolan movies but to be honest, Batman just works the best in animated form for me. I think his costume and a lot of the villains are very hard to adapt in live action. Which is why my favorite will always be Conroy in the animated series. My favorite Batman movies are Mask of the Phantasm and Under the Red Hood. I also like Batman Begins a bit more than the Dark Knight (although I think Dark Knight is the better movie), I just love how Nolan tells the origin story in non-linear order. Your video also got me super hyped to check out the adaptations of Hush and The Long Halloween. Im gonna see The Batman on Wednesday and I'm very excited! Thanks for the wonderful video!

As much as I love The Dark Knight, I have to put mask of the phantasm at the top. Great music and amazing art direction, I get chills every time I see the initial time he puts on the cowl. And finally, the completely unhinged and glorious performance of Mark Hammill. The Dark Knight is a close second, held there by a not as interesting Batman.

I always enjoy hearing your thoughts on films, and in this case I had seen quite a few of them since I really like the Batman animated movies in general. It's nice to see I'm not alone in some of the ones I really didn't like (The Killing Joke was such a major disappointment for me, not the least of which for the botched Batgirl prologue, and I found Public Enemies so boring I turned it off) and that some of the ones I really enjoyed (Under the Red Hood) were also high on your list. I'm a little surprised Hush is so high on your list. I was really enjoying it until the ending villain reveal. I guess the one twist doesn't necessarily ruin the whole thing, but it's just a bit awkward since there were scenes that don't make any sense given who really turned out to be the villain. The kicker is they changed the ending from the graphic novel it was based on too, so I was really scratching my head about the whole thing. Great video, and really enjoyable to see clips of movies I haven't seen yet. Batman Ninja looks crazy interesting, I may have to check that one out sometime!

As a fellow Batman fanatic I had a great time with this video. Great work, Dan! The malleability of the character of Batman really shines through in this video. We’ve received some truly wonderful animated Batman films (Mask of the Phantasm, Under the Red Hood etc) that many consider the definitive characterization of Batman. But we’ve also had iconic big screen portrayals like Nolan’s trilogy and the two Burton / Keaton films. I was pleasantly surprised to see both the animated adaptations of both Hush and The Long Halloween on your list. As two of my favorite Batman graphic novels I admit I was willing to overlook their shortcomings and enjoyed both movies a lot. I’m definitely one of the people that believes The Batman can absolutely top The Dark Knight, I often find myself in the same boat as you. Every time I start to question The Dark Knight or entertain the idea that it might be overrated, when I sit down and watch it I’m marveled by how good it is. If I were to do a ranking, and I followed my heart like you did - The Dark Knight would probably find itself at the #1 spot. (For now. We’ll see!)

I loved how high up Batman Ninja was. I loved every second of that film. It was something I never knew I needed from a Batman movie. I'm also surprised how high up you had BVS ranked. Your BVS review was how I was introduced to you so its cool to see how you came around to it.

Great video! My favorite is Batman Beyond Return of the Joker, for Mark Hamill’s performance at least. One note about it-it was originally censored for US release, and the censored version is kind of non sensical. There was a big trade in trying to find the uncensored version at the time! Hope that’s the version you watched.

I agree about the Killing Joke, I was so disappointed with it. Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are always Batman and the Joker for me, I hear their voices when I'm reading Batman comics, and I was so excited for it. I love a lot of the other animated films, glad to see Under the Red Hood, JL Doom and Flashpoint getting strong reviews!

Great list Dan...it's a great compendium of all the Batman movies, mostly animated, but a wide variety. One query....did you watch the Batman Beyond original cut, which I think was R rated? On one hand, much more disturbing acts by Joker, putting more dramatic effect of Robin's trauma and response, but probably made a better story, than what was released.

I always wanted a movie based on Alan Grant's, 'the Last Arkham'. If it could be done with a darker tone as this upcoming film seems to be, I would be a happy guy. Hats off to you Dan! This is a hell of a lot of Batman to watch and a good list. I wouldn't have been able to do it.

Very glad to see the batman movie with adam west getting some love in this list always been a fav of mine but i loved that cheesy era because it never took itself to seriously and was just good fun. Also great to see so many animated movies getting a chance to be spotlighted i have to admit i have only seen a fraction but so few lists bother with them and yet some of them are better than some of the big blockbuster movies we got. And finally as much as i might want to try and sneak keatons batman to the top i know objectivly in my heart the nolan movies were better well at least the 1st and 2nd the 3rd did not seem to have the same magic i do agree with that. But the dark knight with heath legder is probally the best example of casting someone outside of the norm, when first announced there were big concerns and then we saw what he did and bam home run. At first i was not sure i would watch the movie went round to a freinds who was part way though (lets just say a poor copy) but it was right on the prision interagtion sequence and even at that poor level i could see how well joker was both written and acted i defiantly made sure to see it.

Love the rankings. I would have swapped Batman 1989 and Batman: Under the Red Hood. Under the Red Hood arguably has the best character arcs, even better than the two Nolan live action ones. Appreciate the effort of ranking all of them.
