Totally worth noting that Danny Carey is the oldest member of Tool at 58yrs old. This man is truly an all-time great 🔥

Hell, Louis Bellson and Joe Morello in their 80s could play circles around .most drummers in their 20s. I hope ol' Danny sticks around long enough to do the same.

A legendary skilled musician like Danny Carey is the result of a kid, gifted beeing born with natural talent, started to play the drums and kept on practicing with inhuman discipline and never stopped mastering new things and searching for the next level.... for around 40 years straight... haha, you will get depressive trying to reach his level because it might be impossible. You have talent? Danny aswell and you can't compensate 40 years of practice and expirience.

Something about Danny Carey's drumming that really sets it apart is his mastery of dynamics. A lot of drummers will be like, "Well, I'm in a metal band, so I'm just going to hammer away at my set as hard as I can the whole time," but Danny Carey plays soft, hard, and everywhere in between. A lot of people focus on how he can play different time signatures with each limb--which is really cool, to be sure--but they miss his dynamics and how he also can do that with each limb, independently. He'll be playing a soft rhythm on the hi-hat with his left foot, pounding a bass drum with his right foot, smashing away at cymbals and toms with his right hand, and playing a rhythm that varies from gentle to heavy with his left hand. That is VERY hard. You are not going to find a lot of drummers who can consistently play hard with one limb and soft with another at the exact same time, much less while playing material as complicated as Tool's.
@markstill82584 жыл бұрын
I still can't wrap my brain how you can play different time signatures with different hands.
@ronhendriks93284 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more! Also note how he turns his stick around for playing rimshots during the interlude. It's all those small nuances and dynamic changes that make him the best imo.

He listens to Indian and African drummers man. That's what sets him apart from the others. That tribal percussion comes from deep tribal rythyms, Cuban, African and Indian, you recognise them instantly if you know these sounds... That's not to say that he isn't in a league of his own, but you can tell he appreciates those deep trance like rythyms that don't obey your regular western time signarures. Igor Cavalera incorporated Brazilian rythyms into sepulturas sound and it did a similar thing in setting them apart from other bands at the time. I'm still in awe, as we all are, of how he manages to bring it all together 🥴.

I've always loved that Maynard doesnt, and never has hogged the spotlight, he sings off in the rear in shadow usually on stage and lets the band get the spotlights for the music.
