Lincoln City were 81 places below Burnley in the football pyramid when the then National League side travelled to Turf Moor for an FA Cup 5th Round tie in February 2017. The sibling management duo of Danny and Nicky Cowley had already led the Imps to victories over League One side Oldham Athletic and Championship teams Ipswich and Brighton during their cup journey, but against a Burnley side that had lost just three of their past 29 matches at home (including a Premier League win over Liverpool), few expected their run to continue.
Here, Danny and Nicky explain the approach they took to the game, and the role that an engrossing battle between Burnley midfielder Joey Barton and Lincoln striker Matt Rhead played as the match went on. It was in the 89th minute that the deadlock was finally broken, thanks to a well-rehearsed set-piece and a close-range header from Lincoln centre-back Sean Raggett. It proved enough to ensure Lincoln became the first non-league side to reach the quarter finals of the FA Cup since 1914.
