Typical KZfaq exploitation. Danny Elfman's Oingo Boingo days aren't the embarassment - the video for "Weird Science" was because he had no involvement in the concept, which was cool for the day, but rather lame by today's standards. Some things don't age well.

wildman318 I don't think Elfman objected to the movie or the song so much... I just think he was annoyed that he was obligated to be in a video he had no creative control over AND a video he considered stupid. Danny Elfman isn't above looking foolish--he has gleefully made a complete ass of himself in several videos (not to mention while part of the Mystic Knights). When he judges that a video is too stupid for him to be in, he knows what he's talking about😉

jdw99 "Dead Man's Party" represents an unfortunate phenomenon where a fantastic and unique band becomes forever linked to one of their most mediocre (comparatively) songs. If you hear "Dead Man's Party", and that's the extent of your knowledge of Oingo Boingo's work, it's tremendous... But if you start listening to the REST of their library, you realize that "Dead Man's Party" is hardly a fair example of what this band is capable of: It happened to DEVO with "Whip It", it happened to the B-52's with "Love Shack". Sometimes a band gets lucky and is forever remembered for their actual best work... But too often--especially where more eccentric bands are concerned--the only thing anyone remembers is the song that got the most radio play or charted the highest😔

He didn't say that he was "embarrassed about his Oingo Boingo Days," he said he was embarrassed about THAT video because it wasn't one that he directed. That means that he LIKED the ones that he directed, hey? Weird Science was the first breakout mainstream song for them (outside of the KROQ fans) so that was a funny time. Some were saying he sold out. Danny Elfman has nothing to be embarrassed about when it comes to his music with the band. Oingo Boingo and he were brilliant, ground-breaking and changed the course of music. I talked with one of the band member's family and she said that they were all accomplished Jazz players that were tired of not making any money so went into New Wave music, as it was called at the time. "Grey Matter" is one of my favs along with "Capitalism".

Are you kidding? This guy is a musical genius. I have ALL the Boingo albums. This guy knows sound and the art of communicating through sound. He is no dummy. The Boingo albums still sound fantastic, superbly produced and his writing is cynical/reality/commentary of the times. Some topics he hit upon back then would get him cancelled today, but back then it was a social commentary, not social promotion with the punk attitude of the times. It was in your face reality, but with a gloss of high fidelity, heavy guitars, synths, brass, heavy/complicated drums , and bass licks to combine into an incredible sound unique to Oingo Boingo. Like the Police, no one can capture the lightning in the bottle Elfman crafted. 'Pictures of You' rates up there with 'Home by the Sea'' (Genesis) for creepy storytelling.

I hated Oingo Boingo with a passion back in their day. I was a metal guitarist and one of my best friends was a new wave keyboardist that loved the band and always tried to convince me of Danny’s genius. Didn’t happen back then but I do see how brilliant he was and is now.

Nasty Habits is one of my favorites from Oingo Boingo. I encourage any fan of his compositions for Tim Burton films to listen to it. On another note the song "A Little Piece of Heaven" by Avenged Sevenfold was partially arranged by Steve Bartek who was one of Boingo's bandmates and has helped with some of the scores created by Elfman.

I feel sad for anyone who didn't get to see OB live during their lives. They put on the best concerts. I was lucky to catch their shows several times in the early 90s.

I don't mind not to remaster the albums, but how about REISSUING the catalog and putting some demos and unreleased songs as bonus tracks? I mean some of those CD versions of the old albums cost a lot of money because they've been out of print for years I think. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) Besides I'm not even sure if the Farewell DVD was ever released as Region 2. Some traders are selling the DVD for 100 dollars. I couldn't even watch it in Europe and I'd have to buy a region 1 DVD player. I'd rather give my money to the band and not to some random merchants who sell Oingo Boingo albums with extremely high price just because they're out of print.

Danny is one of a few musicians around still that you can tell is genius or borderline genius. What do you think his IQ might be 150? 160? Higher? Some comparisons - It is believed Mozart's IQ was at least 180.
@24kGoldenRocket8 жыл бұрын
+Darren Willett >125 is Genius by definition. That is what Richard Feynman scores. He is only just a brilliant physicist. I estimate Elfman's to be about 140. Just my guess.
@24kGoldenRocket8 жыл бұрын
***** I am surprised. Perhaps Elfman is a savant concerning his musical talent. But I think that Feynman is one who actually tested poorly.. Tests are limited in their scope of measuring underlying talent. I will bet that Feynman would score much higher if he were retested as his ability to see the underlying abstract patterns in the Quantum Universe was phenomenal. I have enjoyed some of his lectures online.

+Babyhowdy233 You're full of shit, and his brother would never say that. Danny was interested in science in school and no one ever said he did poorly. I've seen no indication that he cannot talk "intelligently" about anything, at the least of which he was smart enough not to get into Scientology.

+24kGoldenRocket don't be surprised, Babyhowdy's talking out of his/her ass. And Danny absolutely DID finish high school.

***** Well, I think Elfman will get the last laugh. If you ask the average person on the street to name 3 film composers, one of them is going to be Danny Elfman, probably 90% of the time. Critic's opinions fade away, but that type of popular recognition makes a lasting legacy.

Some of his great stuff was from his early days when he scored his brothers movie "The Forbidden Zone". A soundtrack he composed in 2 weeks on no budget. Great classic film.

Why is Danny so embarrassed about the Weird Science video? it looks like every other Oingo Boingo video and the song is great! It is what made me a fan of them to begin with! He really shouldn't be ashamed of that. The 'Little Girls" video, however, should be the one he's blushing about.
@EuroThemeParkArchive7 жыл бұрын
The Little Girls video is brilliant fun and totally artfully insane, some people don't get the joke but it's a gem of a video and Danny is full of charisma in it!
@iRenz07 жыл бұрын
Porch Fyre not to him it wasn't the same. It's his body of work and he can say exactly what he just said about it. But yes I do agree about little girls, although I'm pretty sure it's a mockery of the idea behind it and it's a catchy tune! But not something I'd sing around a park 0_0
@David_T6 жыл бұрын
Because both the song and video were pretty empty headed, and Oingo Boingo were a thinking man's band. Several of their songs, including 'LIttle Girls', told from the perspective of a desperate person ("Cinderella Under Cover", "Wild Sex in the Working Class"). Not to say that Weird Science was a bad song, it just wasn't typical of their style.

The 80s are now revered as an endless source of imagination and not the embarrassment many claim they were. Just look around, you won't find an ounce of originality and fun you found in bands like Oingo Bongo. Indeed he should embrace and accept it and perhaps love it because these times will never repeat again.

Old post here, but it reminds me of Tim Curry and his feelings of being in 'Rocky Horror Picture Show'. He was loved by countless thousands of fans that enjoyed that weird little movie, and all the memories it blessed them with. 'Forbidden Zone' was, well, weird. But it was interesting to watch, and wonder what drugs they were taking when writing, and, well, the whole production process.
