He may never have gotten the fame or notoriety he deserved, he inspired a lot of players and pushed the limits of the guitar far beyond what had been done before. Thank God for this man!

I saw and heard Mr. Gatton in Boston Mass at Berklee College of Music. He shamed us ALL !!! Laid the staff and administrators to waste and I was speechless……………🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

Danny Gatton and Roy Buchannan..........both SUPERB guitarists. If I am not mistaken both tragically took their own lives. People, please, please, ALWAYS LISTEN CLOSELY when loved ones are talking with you. Make sure to "feel" the essence of their words!!

Besides the greatness of Danny anybody feels the calmness of Charlie and Danny in this interview? compared to today's interviews is like war is starting.. full of complex.. what a time to be alive in the 80s ❤

Greg Koch said he owed his style to Danny….after playing rock for years, he found Danny & his style radically changed….Greg is one of the best….but Danny was the greatest!👍

This was a great interview. Charlie Rose may have been a not so savory guy in some ways, but he regularly had interesting musical guests and was quite a good interviewer. Hearing Danny's thoughts as he's right on the cusp of bigger things is interesting. He seems conflicted, like he's doing it because he has to for whatever reason. Always seemed to me that he would have been happier to have been able to play in bands like Redneck Jazz Explosion to wider audiences rather than having to tailor bands and material to his image as "that hotshot guitar player". The music suffered, and having to pull out the same bag of tricks on every gig may have become frustrating.

For a while, Danny Gatton, Nils Lofgren, and Roy Buchanan lived really close to each other. Within 20/30 miles. They were contemporaries. I’ve never seen nothing like that before.

Few guitarists have possessed Danny's combination of range and technique. Johnny Hiland, Scotty Anderson and Tommy Emmanuel come to mind.

Unfortunately we , the audience, were blind resp. deaf to the genius of Danny Gatton.... and only had ears for the likes of ec and jimi hendrix. He was way ahead of his time

Nope. We knew when he was playing that he was special among his peers. D.C. is rich with great guitarists from Bobby Radcliffe to Roy Buchanan to Rusty Bogart. Danny's real bete noir was that he hated being on the road, traveling.

@@garryroberts5106 agreed. He may not have been as popular as the players you mentioned but if any of them would have engaged in a "chop-heads" contest Danny would have never even had to shift into high gear and would have smoked their asses, I know what I'm saying I'm a guitar player myself

Strange how two of the world’s greatest electric guitarists, the other being Jeff Beck, worked a lot on motor vehicles/engines and so on. Imagine the danger to the fingers. They must have been as agile with power tools etc, as on a fretboard.

Charlie Rose has his misgivings. There's is no doubt. His talent for interviewing has made us better. Bringing Gatton's talent to the world is appreciated.

I may be completely wrong ....but I get the feeling that others wanted Danny to be more famous than he himself wanted to be....and because of that he felt pressure to be so .....when in fact he really wasn't sure if he wanted it or not.....or maybe he did but didn't want all the shit that comes along with it and there lied his dilemma...I see a regular guy that just happens to be one of... or perhaps the greatest to ever pick up the instrument. It was an afterthought for him ......hell.....he'd rather work on a broke down car. 🤷‍♂️ Gone to soon.

It still amazes me that for a while, Danny Gatton, Nils Lofgren and Roy Buchanan lived within 20/30 miles from each other. Around Bethesda. They each had their own style. It’s like some kind of phenomenon.

I think that was the biggest obstacle to him being more famous than he was. He played what he wanted to play, which wasn't always what the masses wanted to hear, even though he was better than anyone. But I wouldn't call his style weird or even obscure. He just played all styles and wouldn't be put into the box of what people may have expected to hear at the time.

Disagree. Rose may not have a clue, but he is engaging and has done some research at least. Danny's smiling and responding genuinely it seems to me, and Rose gets more from him than I've seen in other interviews.

You'll never convince me that Danny Gatton killed himself. Some people claimed he was "depressed". There's ZERO evidence he was depressed. As a matter of fact, he was finally getting his musical career into high gear, and as he said in this interview, was going to see where it goes. He as getting the recognition, the offers, special appearances, he was moving up. I don't believe for one instant he was "depressed".

Sorry he did. I cannot begin to guess about his reasoning without any firsthand knowledge but have known others that could seem normal at times with deep seated issues that came out at others.

All kinds of depression underneath. He had money problems and did not always feel like playing some of the gigs he booked let alone touring. The pressure got to him and he snapped.
