Hi Dan. Those bearings are conical bearings, also used on older VW's and of course other drum brakes. The way to tighten them is: With a 1/2" ratchet, turn them on snug, so tight, but not too over-tight. Then turn them lose 1/4 turn. Too tight or lose prematurely ware them out. When installing new ones, they come with 2 cups, if they are a bare to get out, it is not that too bad leaving the old ones in. Normally there are 3 or more indentations between the 2 cups. You can use a punch or srew driver to get them out. For installing the new ones, there is a set with conical stamps to punch them in. You can also use an old bearing to punch them in. Most important is greasing the new bearings. Please use specific bearing grease, or they get too hot and weld to the stump. Greasing them the proper way is also very important. Put some grease on the palm of your hand, dab the wider flat side of the bearing into the grease, until grease comes out of the smaller top flat side of the bearing. This might be teadious, but ensures grease gets behind the needle bearings and expands the lifespan of them. This is an old way, teached to me as an aprentice by an old mechanic. One good thing about being an old bastard like me is I didn’t have to go through all this various test malarkey. I passed my car test in 1988 at the age of 17. At 22 I was driving a car and trailer and a 7.5 ton car transporter around Europe collecting salvage cars then went from a car licence to an HGV class one in a week when I was 25. Been a class one driver ever since. I’m currently on a 44 ton wagon and drag which is just like a car and car trailer to drive.......bit bigger though 😂

In Lithuania trailers do have to be registered too and have working lights including indicator brake lights and number plate which too have to have some sort of lighting.

For the MINI owner, check out MCM, they also have a B-series engine built into a MINI with a separate frame. Trailers and caravans never get the maintenance they need, I also look at myself, my caravan has only had minor maintenance, never major maintenance.

Stripped axle bolt threads, bent a frames, electrical gremlins, a knackered handbrake, these are the issues i had with my Brian James.... and they are perfectly normal! They need looking after like any car, not as much but still. I had mine 'serviced' by a trailer specialist, it felt a *lot* nicer to tow afterwards. You can build them up with gucci bits of kit, electric winches, tyre holders, mine was modified so it tilts, no need for ramps. Doesn't get used many times a year, but when it does it's indispensable 👍

Make sure you keep that standard front end on that mini! It’s defo fits I’ve managed it!

Tapered wheel bearings on the trailers, you have to set the pre-load on the bearing by tightness of the hub nut

Hey Danny.🖐 There are two types of men out there. One who owns a trailer and the bastard who borrows that man's trailer. Yes, occasionally I am that bastard. Reminds me of the guy who owns a welder. He has a lot of friends, too.😉 Tell me again about that camera of yours. Obviously it has some intelligent auto-focus built in, you trying to focus on the stud that needed welding and the camera focused on the welder. haha, nice. Our trailer laws are iffy at best around in my state. Some are registered and have brake and signal lights, license plates w/stickers, etc. while others have nothing. Technically, you should, but no one really enforces the smaller ones like single axle lawn mower trailers, so most folks don't bother. I believe the rules are more strict for the bigger ones though. BTW, shoutout to your mate for keeping the Mini alive. Also, big ups to whoever made that light of yours... Pro tip. Carry a spare wheel bearing or two. Also get grease nipple caps, and keep them greased.

I think if you were only trailering something like that mini you could find a car and trailer combo that you could drive on a normal B licence.

I did my trailer test last year for work. Tow some serious weight about behind the work trucks. Aiming to get a trailer for my Clio at some point in the future. We use Ifor Williams trailers all the time and they handle the abuse well but I reckon I'll get a BJT Clubman or similar like yours. Trailer lad!

To be pedantic for a post 97 license you can tow without a trailer license. If you have a 2000 kg gross weight towing vehicle and a 1500kg gross plated trailer then you can take a car up to 1000kg. But yeah a license let’s you tow a lot more.

Interesting video Dan! I recently bought a twin axle trailer for £200 that requires a little work but love a project (Couple of new Indespension Units basically). I currently hold a B1 License that I’ve held just over 10 years and I believe I can tow a max authorised mass of 3.5T without taking an additional test. Hope someone could correct me if I’m wrong!?! I gather your original license was the same Dan or did you hold a B License? Cheers 👍

Auto focus apparently disagreed with your new found fame and fortune and fled the scene. Even the dog was trying to undermine your vlogger lighting skills! I've recently jumped into the trailer scene after a surprise 20 foot boat acquisition. The bearings freaked me out as well, and the shonkiness with no MOT style inspection makes me worry what else is on the road! At least yours doesn't get dunked in the sea though, nothing a warm wheel bearing likes more than that.
