1. He played an active Ibanez. 2. He has a distortion on, most likely a rat because he loved that thing. 3. He hit hard with his heavy gauge pick, he also had low action so it was naturally distorting.

let me add, Paul use to record all the slipknot songs wit a IBANEZ ATK (active), basically thats the base tone on that model, the preamp is amazing, i have a atk 305 and i tell you thats the secret! that is a inexpensive bass will be finded in reverb for something like $400 - $700$

this is actually pretty good, the only thing it needs is something like a transparent overdrive with the gain all the way down, just to give it that tight low end and extra “clank”

@@krms2504 on the sansamp or the amp ? Sansamp: Drive: 5/ Presence: 7/ Blend:4/ Bass: 6/ Mids and Highs: 2. Adjust level to something coherent (arround 4 in my case) . Tip: if tone is too dark or bright, adjust the blend, not the highs Peavey pro 500: most controls are to adapt to the rest of the rig but some key points: high boost and low cut engaged, contour cranked. Highs are on 2 on my unit but YMMV. For the parametric EQ i'd say noodle arround to find sweet spots but a heavy scoop at 800 hz is the core.

Paul actually used VERY light gauge strings for the tuning they were in, which is a huge part of his tone. He used a .115 gauge for the low B, which is about what most people would normally use for C#. He also had super low action, half of his tone is literally just clanky fret buzz. And he used basses with active soapbar humbuckers. You'll never get that thick, aggressive attack out of a Rick

When tuning that much down, you want a Long-Scale Behs (>=35") and put the lower part of a 5-String Set on, eg. .135 String Size on the lowest like from Daddario EXL165. BTDT, pushed a 5 String Yamaha down to A/D/G/C/E 😅
