My aunt has a handwritten copy of Dante and I used to go over to her house and look through in hopes she’d see how much I loved it and give it to me. My mom was like, “you’re not getting that…” 😂

Penmanship was incredible back then. Today you're lucky if people can even write at all.

As much as I agree with you that typically the older the better, it's important to point out that the book he's reviewing still would be been like the best writer you'll come across back then but now, while most can't write as well, more can read and write at all.

I pull out a dollar store rollerball and press hard into the page indenting it several pages down. The ink smears and bleeds through to the other side of the page. I write, "I may not be a four year old but I sure write like one." The handwriting is barely legible and physically painful to witness. The value of the book plummets precipitously.
