I ask strangers in Vancouver what languages they speak. As you can see, Vancouver is a very multicultural city full of languages from all around the world. Hope you enjoy, and you may support my work if you chose to :)

You might have had better opportunity to meet French speakers in Montreal. I was there years ago and multiple places had employees that only spoke french. I only got by because at the time I could read Spanish and was able to understand the menus. Ive noticed that Vancouver and Toronto Canadians don’t speak French. Well the people that I have met.

Dan, thank you! Somehow this simple recipe of asking strangers about their linguistic abilities works fantastically each time and always makes me cheer a little. That is a huge achievement given I've barely found myself cheerful in the past few (if not many) years. Whenever you come across these cool, versatile characters and thoughtful convos on the street, it makes a deep, enriching impression. Like the other Dan from this episode and many other people before him in all your videos. Hope your circumstances won't ever force you to quit doing these vids. Live long and prosper ✌

There are fantastic, meaningful things to engage with like those stories behind the nice job you've done. Language connects people from all kinds of backgrounds, and your hard work on your channel has paid off. I appreciate the good results. I have English and Spanish as my primary languages by the way. Thanks a lot for bringing this kind of content.

Some great ideas for future videos would be, asking speakers of Icelandic from Reykjavik how many languages can they speak, and speakers of Welsh from Wales, and speakers of Dutch from Limburg, and speakers of Norwegian from Olso, and also, speakers of Breton from Brittany which is in France - I am learning many languages, including the prettiest languages ever created, namely Icelandic + Norse / Dutch / Norwegian etc, which are as pretty / refined / poetic as English, way too pretty not to know, and the nature is also amazing in all the Nordic countries, and the languages are so heavenly, I cannot even describe how pretty the words and sounds are, they are a real work of art, so I enjoy learning them all, and many other gorgeous languages as well, and it’s also a lot of fun watching this type of videos and anything language-related!

By the way, my current levels are... - writer level in English and native speaker level in Spanish - advanced level in Dutch and close to advanced level in Norwegian - very close to intermediate level in Old Norse / Icelandic / Welsh - intermediate level in German / Swedish / Portuguese / French / Italian - beginner level in Breton / Hungarian / Gothic / Latin / Faroese / Galician / Danish / Slovene - total beginner in Cornish / Manx / Irish / Scottish Gaelic / Aranese / Elfdalian / Gallo / Limburgish / Occitan / Luxembourgish / Catalan / East Norse / Ripuarian / Swiss German / Alemanic / Austrian German / PlatDeitsch / Greenlandic Norse / Friulian / Pretarolo / Sardinian / Neapolitan / Sicilian / Venetian / Esperanto / Walloon / Ladin / Guernsey / Norn / Burgundian / West Frisian / North Frisian / East Frisian / Finnish / Latvian / Estonian etc (and the other languages based on Dutch / German / Norwegian / Italian / French that are referred to as ‘dialects’ but are usually a different language with different spelling etc) (This list isn’t complete tho!) These languages are all super pretty, with Dutch / Norse / English / Norwegian / Icelandic / Gothic / Welsh / Breton being in my top favorites, so I highly recommend learning them / any of them / some of them etc, especially Dutch / Icelandic + Norse / Norwegian (and at least one Celtic languages like Breton or Welsh, and at least one Latin language like Galician or Portuguese or Gallo etc) as they are so magical and so poetic, they are a lot of fun to learn and pronounce and see and hear etc, and I’ve been learning a lot of new words in the Norse languages lately, so I have seen so many thousands of gorgeous words, I cannot recommend them enough, these languages are a work of art!

Old Norse is one of the prettiest languages I’ve ever seen, it has real gorgeous words like erfiði / yfir / haf / vindr / dyn / skegg / dróttinn / veit / drengr / fjall / hǫnd / fisksins / lengr / hvassir / rauðr / hvarr / grænn / hvat / líkligr / hǫss / afi / frændi / heitir / veð / hráka / þó / kvern / mælti / hét / setja / hinn / kveða / sinn / leið / brott / knerri / við / dýr / með / heyra / eða / veiðir etc, and the word endings (like nir and inn and sins etc) and the letter combinations are so pretty, just like the word endings and letter combinations in English and Dutch and Norwegian, and Icelandic is very similar, and Faroese also, and Icelandic also has mostly gorgeous words like efne / verða / fer / eyra / nafni / leita / hef / logn / hafið / drekka / líf / dreki / samviska / vindinn / hæna / viska / garðinn / sófn / nef etc, and Dutch has gorgeous words such as verdween / links / veld / adem / renner / trekt / heen / deksel / voorheen / avond / weefsel etc, and Norwegian has gorgeous words like flyvertinne / sett / aviser / lære / grassker / lys / sølv / flyplass / heksen / eplet / ved etc, and Welsh has gorgeous words like helygen / afon / treth / ffeil / heddiw / boldyn / derwen / ffinnon / ers / fynwent / enaid etc, and they are also the coolest looking, just like English, the letters are gorgeous, the overall aspect is so pretty and cool, and the pronunciation rules are wonderful and they sound so modern and so cool, and to think most ppl have never heard of most of these languages as they are very unknown - I can’t stop learning new pretty words in Old Norse and Icelandic (and the other pretty languages) and they are really áddìctive to look at and read and hear in lyrics etc, I’ve been listening to Skáld songs in Old Norse and Icelandic since I found the first song in Old Norse (Troll Kalla Mik) and I’ve memorized most of those lyrics!

🐢Dan: I'm not sure how I missed this vid. I haven't been to Vancouver in many years although I did visit some friends in Victoria in 2019. This video showed once again your talent in engaging strangers in informative, humorous, gentle discussions. Multiculturalism is an identity-less low trust society full of people who stick to and vouch for their own kind, with no spiritual ties to the land they occupy. 50 years ago Immigrants used to denounce their citizen ship for a Canadian passport. They dedicated themselves to this country. They rarely flew back where they came from and never sent money back. Today, they only want permanent residence status (something like 75% of them) so they can legally occupy two countries and without giving full loyalty to Canada, because what is Canada to them? It’s nothing to them other than a place to make money, they don’t see Canadian culture or all the other ethnicities in Canada as “theirs”. They fly back and forth multiple times a year, they send money back home, they bombard our social services and they all have one foot out the door.

Merry Christmas, Daniel, and keep up providing us with this amazing and meaningful content! I am from the Azores (S. Miguel Island), but I am passionate about meeting new cultures, and strangers. Fortunately enough, working in Tourism makes it possible, and with the current and growing influx, we manage to see people from around the world. Apart from that, I've always been curious about Canada. Perhaps because it's always been portrayed to be like a multicultural environment (My uncle used to live in Montréal for about 30 years,; he moved there without speaking a single word of neither French or English), even if the current situation is becoming rougher (with rent prices going up in Montréal, and with violence increasing among public schools).

when i saw ur community post that u were almost done ur last "WLDYS" video, i had the suspicion that it would be vancouver haha. its awesome that ur final city is my hometown, and that its conveniently also the longest in ur series!! now i got a better idea of what everyone in my city speaks.

I see comments criticizing people who have said they know a bit of a language a few words. I wouldn't mock people who yearn to speak another language or even speak just a few words of one. Imagine the USA where people with the mere hint of an accent may be subjected to hate from strangers. Encourage any level of language learning even if it's a single word.

The best thing about Vancouver is what's outside of Vancouver, the nature. All the stuff in the city, is no different than any other city -- concrete, traffic, people, buildings. Whenever people say Vancouver is such a beautiful city, they are looking outward towards nature, to the ocean, to the mountains; they are not in the mountains looking back at the city saying, 'how beautiful it is, the streets, the buildings, the pollution...", no.
