Danzan Ryu was my first art! I started when I was 9yo in Northern California. I went on to other arts as my instructor at the time moved away, and have continued to study other arts for over 40 years. I have fond memories of Danzan Ryu.

Love these guys. I have had the pleasure of working out with Professor Kevin Colton on several occasions. At the Westside Dojo before they moved to their new YMCA and at a few Southern California AJJF conventions - Danzan Ryu. I have met Professor Hodgkin as well. These two are very highly respected and prominent figures in the AJJF and to watch their techniques is a pleasure. Although it used to be taboo to have anyone below Black Belt these specific techniques, the fact that the restrictions have been lifted is understandable. The passing on of these techniques at this level of execution should be the standard. We all have our limitations, but to see these two in action is very special. I believe it is time for the various Danzan Ryu organizations (AJJF, Shoshin Ryu Yudanshakai, Kodenkan Yudanshakai, AJI, Kodenkan Danzan Ryu Assoc.) to come together every few years, to keep Danzan Ryu alive and flourishing. At least make it easier for Danzan Ryu dojos and their respective Jujitsuka to interact and train together regardless of their organizational affiliation.

Beautiful. It's great to see real Jujutsu for a change, and that some of the truly combat-effective traditional arts are still practised to this day. You have a lovely dojo and I must say, am a bit envious too :) Thank you.

If you can't perform it against a fully resisting opponent, i don't trust its combat effectiveness.

What style of Japanese jujutsu? as everyone knows Jujitsu in japan is just an umbrella term for dozens of unrelated traditional systems.

Interesting how there are variations to Okazaki's techniques from different schools. Not saying any are wrong as long as the basic principle is still there, but it is facinating. Good technique displayed. DZR nidan

When I was studying Danzan Ryu all through the 1990's it was forbidden to even perform this particular list of techniques in front of anyone other than ikkyu (1st degree brown belt) and above. I have been inactive for almost 20 years and the change in this philosophy is surprising, but nice to see.

Good stuff. I appreciate the realistic entries and approach -- it's like a different type of Nage No Kata. I'm a small circle jujitsu guy and see the variation in your own expression of Danzan Ryu. It's different than what we do in Alameda, but really nice.
@sotiriosnovatsis4529Ай бұрын
I didn't see anything realistic about this. I looked it at from a genuinely curious angle, but it was so staged and looked like it would not work against someone really trying to hurt you.
@Nethezbet3 жыл бұрын
Well, this reminded me of the problem inherent in DZR and most similar arts, to include aikido and the like. No pressure testing, and I know there is the near-religious belief that "this is too dangerous to train that way." No, it's not. The vast majority of these techniques simply would not work if uke decided to not comply. I appreciate the 'art' of these forms, but they are no more than a dance between to willing, compliant people. I have no problem with people studying the art, just so long as people are honest about its 'effectiveness.'
@SI-ln6tc2 жыл бұрын
Some techniques you simply can't practice in sparring. Better in kata. Especially grab counters. No ones going to grab you in sparring. Eg like your wrist etc Throws though can be use in sparring. It would look more like judo.
@markmadrid9642 жыл бұрын
just about all judo and jujitsu techniques are learned in what we jujitsuka call Kata. The formal way to learn a technique. Then i've seen some schools do real randori with real resistace standing and rolling/submission wrestling. though I'm a Shodan in Danzan Ryu and have experience in randori I know a good judoka or a good bjj practitioner will smash me in thier art as they specialize in thier field. None the less this is s good effective martial art. This was the most popular jujitsu style on the west coast until bll kind of took over. This was and is used by many police on west coast. its legit.
@Nethezbet2 жыл бұрын
@@markmadrid964 I train cops and used to train DZR. I promise it lacks effectiveness under pressure. A week of GST will prepare you better for a real world fight better than having a bb in DZR. I respect those who practice the art, don't get me wrong, many wonderful people there and there is nothing wrong with learning an art you are drawn to. But I'm not going to pretend it can hold up to an aggressive attacker; it simply can't. A few components might be useful, such as some of the judo throws and a couple of the more useful ground techniques, but in all my years as being a cop and DT instructor I can't for the life of me recall a single instance of anyone grabbing a man's wrist =P Joking aside, please don't confuse my view on DZR's effectiveness as a reflection of how I view it as an art. I have no problems with anyone learning anything, my issue is with the exaggerated claims of various martial arts' effectiveness in real world situations.

@@Nethezbet tell you what. were were doing mauy tai and danzan ryu at this awesome mauy tai school where we would roll and do randori. one of our guys started bjj also and after about a month and a half he started wiping us out. i had a taste of reality. i also went to a judo school as a dzr ikyu and i was helpless against an experienced judoka. all fun learning though. I'm 55 now, i think too late to start a different art. i stay in shape with danzan ryu pretty well and am realistic about my limitations.

Edit: Danzan Ryu Jujitsu is an effective martial art, but it falls under the many martial arts problem: put it to action. Some of these martial arts: Karate, Taekwondo, Judo all put their works out there and now we're seeing practitioners of these arts rise in MMA. Why can't this one? Put it out there!
