Hi guys, In this video il show you how i changed my motor in my "William Wordsworth". Bought as a Non-runner il also show you a bit of troubleshooting, mainly if your motor gets really hot it can cause damage to electronics or worse the tender itself so its important to keep an eye on things
When i say "DCC Concepts" what i really meant was DCC Supplies, (thanks Tony 😉), heres their link....

Excellent video, most enjoyable. Also noticed the one Loco has cross head screws on the Con rods etc, the other does not.

Cheers 👍 i suspect the William Wordsworth was made in the early days of dapol, i think the Britannia is relatively newer in comparison, hadnt noticed the screws! 👍

Nice video and a happy result, you kept saying dcc concepts LOL! it's dcc supplies for dapol spares 😁. keep up the good work, All the best Tony.

Doh 🤦, my bad, DCC Supplies! Thanks Tony 👍, guess im just practicing for when i get sponsorship lol 🤣🤣🤣, Not a good CV is it 😂, tbh i have most the parts kicking around nowadays as i normally opt for a coreless motor...

You should never assume it’s dcc or dc without actually looking when buying used, I love buying non dcc and converting and have had the same result as this a few times and the resistors are best removed when converting to dcc as they can choke the loco and effect the running, the decoders do all the work that they did. The motors are sometimes repairable always worth a look some issues include 1 coil not soldered, washers missing on armature causing binding, broken brush, damaged springs and one that had a brush missing and was running off the spring good video anyway have fun.👍 one other thing when connecting the decoders just remember red right black left same with motor orange right grey left motor on its side I normally find orange top grey bottom.

Yeah im still learning, i guess we always do though... I thought it best to just show how to replace the motor rather then take it apart, rewind it bearings etc... It can all be repaired for sure some way or another tbh, with my wiring of DCC in the past i dont worry about which side the pickups are wired in my locos because the chips have rectifiers built in so threre really is no need, The motor wiring can be important to get correct if running the chips on dcc and dc configuration however i again dont worry about that as i can reverse loco direction on my pc and i dont run my locos that have dcc on a dc system, i disable that function too. Directional lights change when i reverse the loco direction on my PC again so no issues there either. If my chips were ever to see dcc they wont do anything. Yeah i find it quite fun too converting the older locos in most cases to DCC 👍 Completely agree it is definitely a good idea to remove casings and covers if testing things out for the first time (i just couldnt be bothered 😂) to make sure not only whether the loco is DC or DCC but mainly to see if there are any loose wires or potential shorts that could arise, to clarify DC on a DCC chip is actually ok... The problem would be running DCC on a DC loco. (DC loco on DCC track) the frequencies could kill a DC motor quite quickly. I am only referring to my experiences with 6 pin and 8 pin socket type decoders here too 👍👍

Also yes absolutely those resistors choke and also those capacitors in a way can scramble the bemf to the dcc chips causing allsorts of mayhem 👍👍👍

Well done. Not sure what the cost of a replacement Dapol motor would be shipped to Australia, but something to bear in mind. Do you know if they use the same motor for all the tender driven loco's? 👍👌

From what ive seen so far the B17,Brittania and William Wordsworth motors are all the same, i had a black steamer with tender... Cant think of the name now but that also had the same motor in it 👍, Have a look here... www.dccsupplies.com/product-category/dapol-spares/n-gauge-spares/n-gauge-steam-spares/ ...and look for your specific loco motor, at a guess id say all the tender locos are the same but you'll be able to see if it is any different on their website, good luck 👍👍

@@ThisWayWorksTWW Yep their website shows different motors for different models. Not sure of the exact differences as they look the same, but they have different part numbers. One for the A3/A4, another for Brittania, and another for the 9F. They don't list a motor for the B1, Q1, Grange, or Manor, so might be the same as one of the other 3. I have 7 of their tender locos and all are working very well. It was more a case of getting one as a spare if it was the same motor for all models, but I will wait for a failure before buying. ;)

If i do come accross a tender dapol that has a different motor il drop a comment here and let you know but yes that is probably the best way to go about it and just wait for a failing motor 👍

Have those drive rods been screwed on to the wheels? Who did that to it?! It's always a bit weird picking up ebay bargains and seeing what their previous owners have done to them... poor little locos... My EWS red class 37 was an ebay bargain marked as a non-runner... The reason it didn't run was the previous owner had absolutely filled it with grease to the point the works were all jammed up with crud. Seems like every time the loco started to fail, the previous owner simply added more grease until it finally stopped completely. Simply cleaned it out and it runs fine now.

Theres screws holding the rods however i almost think this was an early dapol chassis and Dapol did that. If not its been done very well. Yes too much oil and grease does stop the locos running, ive seen this quite alot!
