Time for a mega-monster-massive Breakdown on nothing in particular -- just the pop song that became one of the industry's first remixes. The twists and turns involved in the making of, "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" are enough to make your head spin. Just the kind of story I enjoy telling. Had you heard this story before? Let me know.

Beautifully written and delivered. The amount of research involved to bring this altogether is impressive. Needless to say, it held me captive until the very end. Well done!

What a great story, had that record in my collection pretty much since the duet came out, but never knew the background. Thanks for shedding some light on it.

Just a *minor* nitpick. Back in 1978, if a single sold a million copies, it was only certified *gold*. To go platinum, a single required minimum sales of TWO million copies. For full-length LPs and tapes, the sales thresholds were 500,000 for gold and 1 million for platinum. For singles, however, the threshold was double that of LPs so a million for gold and two million for platinum. The RIAA changed the certification levels for singles to match those of LPs around 1988 or so as no single had managed to achieve 2 million in sales since "We Are the World" in 1985 and overall sales of singles had been declining. (After the 12" single became available commercially--until around 1978, they were almost exclusively available to club DJs--the certification levels were set at the same level as full-length LPs. Incidentally, Barbra shared an achievement with Donna Summer on their duet, "No More Tears" when the 7" single sold more than 2 million, going platinum, and the 12" single sold over 1 million, also going platinum. Usually, sales figures were combined for both 7" and 12" singles but "No More Tears" was just that popular that it could go platinum in each single format.)
