I admire your creativity in creating new content. May I suggest/request a fish and coral ID video with 'floating' text tags? Your underwater shots are very soothing, mix that with some relaxing music and the viewer will learn something while 'Zenning out' to your beautiful footage. Like if you agree. Cheers! Erik

Thanks that's heaps of great info and ideas - even for someone whose been licensed for 30 years like me, I hadn't heard of the dive sausage and it's a great idea. One other suggestion is if you are going to do a deep dive, do the deep stuff first and work your way back up the profile and don't bounce up and down, it's easy to overlook if your covering a lot of ground over reefs. I've also found sailing knives are better than most dive knives, cutting away fishing line is not a Crocodile Dundee activity. Your vids make me homesick to get back in the water.

Julian Rocks. I used to sail my 16' Hobie out to them almost every day after parking the horses for 6 weeks over summer, camping at Clarkes Beach Caravan Park. Surf the mornings, sail the arvos.

Nice video Nate, I’ve been a NAUI instructor for 10 years so I know that there’s a lot more that goes on behind the scenes. My instructor who was a commercial diver prior to becoming a recreational instructor always taught in addition to what you said that a knife is a requirement due to entanglement hazards, and I have had to use one a couple of times due to monofilament fishing line that is really hard to see and break by hand. There is a good point that a knife is more important on a snorkel dive than a scuba dive.

I was watching one of SV Delos’s videos years ago and they were using these large florescent inflatable socks to ID there location while they were ascending. It helped ID there location in a fast current or if they were having issues with aggressive criters (sharks) and their observing/ rescue boat would there when they finished there decompression accent. Regardless of there need.

Comprehensive guide delivered concisely & swiftly, great job Nate. Also recommend DAN (divers alert network) insurance cover whether professional instructor/DM or private individuals. Emergency evac from anywhere distance constraints obviously have a bearing, doctors on line immediately and for a very reasonable premium for either. No I don;t work for them or get any commission just have dove all over the place and instructed, as instructor students covered too dependent on scheme.

Nate, that was solid advice. Thanks for doing that. I would love to see more in-depth discussion on topics that are diving related as they pertain to living aboard. Example. which fins for which purpose. Things to consider for underwater filming. Great habits for a good dive buddy. The right dive suit for the right conditions. Cheers mate!

Great video Nate! Thanks for sharing your experiences with us, they are truly invaluable. I just returned to the dive community after a 15 year hiatus. I was recently in Hawaii, where I know you have worked, and did 4 dives. It is certainly intimidating and you can certainly tell the good from the bad dive shops. Excellent. You have the best diving and photography of any channel I have seen. You should be focusing more on this as far as I'm concerned. Here are some suggestions. For diving - buoyancy control and finning (particularly while filming). Photography...tips for using a GoPro for underwater shots. No use talking about a 10 or 20 thousand dollar rig because not many can afford that and those that can already know how to use it. I like your sailing stuff too, but your boat is so unique that your experiences are not something a typical sailboat owner can relate to. The nature footage you have is top notch.

Magnetic declination is changing as the polar reversal is still ongoing, so the gap between true north and magnetic north changes. This may also be reflected in migration patterns of aquatic species which utilize the planet's magnetic field. I just read a study on sharks being found in regions they've not been seen before, so if you're looking in a known area and they're not around, that'd be why.

I did not know a dive flag can be blue and white. When you showed your dive flag flying, I thought that's not right, it should be red and white. I researched and learned: Two styles of flags are in use. Internationally, the code flag alfa/alpha, which is white and blue, is used to signal that the vessel has a diver down and other vessels should keep well clear at slow speed. In North America, it is conventionally red with a white stripe from the upper left corner to the lower right corner. Of course, I'm from the USA and ours is red and white, so blue and white are wrong to me. To my knowledge, I have never observed a blue and white dive flag on any of the other sailing channels that dive. Thanks, I'm glad that I know now. 👍

Really interesting! Especially about the safer dive kit - I think I might do one... Also the navigation advice was spot on - I've come up 1km from the boat and had to swim to it with an empty tank - I don't ever want to repeat that episode! ...and I was the skipper so no one was bringing the boat to me...

Nice, I was certified years ago, but never got a chance to dive the way you guys do. It's refreshing the videos your putting out now, I feel like we are learning something and not just watching channels jumping in and showing little fishies and fan corel.. I dove Bermuda that was my first, Its something if you never tried go out and take a course learn something new every month when you get old and you will someday like Colin said "In 20 years from now you'll wish you did" if you can't go diving, just go snorkel even in a pool it's enlightening and you may get hooked..

Great video - This would be a good one to show at DEMA or run as part of a loop in a dive shop. Good use of the memory mnemonics such as "begin with review and friend"(BWRAF) , buddy checks, safety sausage, save a dive kit ...etc. Also, very good explanation on the usefulness of continuing dive education with advanced certifications in different specialties. Filmed with beautiful ocean scenery - nice work.

As a former cold water diver in British Columbia (I've been in the prairies for too long, would need to start again with training), I'd recommend drysuit training. Cold water wetsuits are fine, once. After that you either leave it on to dive again, or dry it completely. You cannot get a damp wetsuit back on, since cold water wetsuits have very little stretch. As it is even a dry wetsuit needs some cornstarch to get into, and if it's a hot day sweat is enough to cause issues. You warm water divers have it easy. 🥶

Good job Nate. I don't dive enough living in Pittsburgh but I am glad I got certified and love to dive in the Caribbean every time I am down there. Do you have any tips on how to avoid a shark attack while diving?

This was a fantastic fact filled tutorial for all of us. I so much appreciate the emphasis on common sense, orientation, and safety. The only suggestion I would offer for future vids is to consider dropping the background canned music noise. It is hard to ignore, and is in conflict with the extremely rich and important content. The voice of a competent and qualified instructor, and the background ambient sound of the sea are more than sufficient for a high quality learning environment. The Muzak background filler is distracting, and annoying. This comment is offered with all due respect….
