I don't know all the differences, but I do know the biggest difference is the dry time. Oils take several days whereas Acrylics dry in a few minutes.
@abbeyporterfield8377
@abbeyporterfield8377 6 жыл бұрын
I am not too experienced with oils, as some others are, but in my opinion it gives it a more realistic look. You can do so much more things with oils that you can't do with acrylics, such as building it using a pallet knife to give it texture. Also, a perk of the drying time is that you actually have that time to be able to work the product to the point of where you like. Whereas if you tried to build up with acrylic, in my opinion, it gets to the point where it's unworkable and gets really thick and cakey almost.

Such a refreshing approach that I've never seen before. Your painting technique is amazing and you are so talented. I've never been one to be able to paint in a small area to start. I always paint the entire area at once but then again, I paint landscapes. I could try and paint a portrait since I've only done it once and it was in a college course where we could only use Burnt Umber and Titanium White. Nothing even close to your beautiful work. Thank you for sharing your gift.

You need to treat them like geometric shapes instead of separate strands. Paint clumps of them and apply light like you would with any other 3d object. Work from big to small and dont overdetail. Refferences are a must for better understanding. If you use them dont copy them for the sake of copying, try to understand where and how individual clumps interact with echother.

I was working on a piece of my uncle that died of cancer, for my grandpa as a birthday gift and this decided to use canvas instead of my usual water colour paper. I spent 7 hours working on it with nothing turning out well, I got so frustrated I felt I would explode at any moment. I finally looked up how to do portraits with oil because I couldn’t get the depth and detail I usually do and behold, the issue was indeed the canvas. I sketched my painting onto a slice of paper and instantly got waaaaaaay better results. Thank you so much for this, it helped me realize that canvas needs to be prepared beforehand :)
@nurabdul1436

Daria, thanks for your tutorials. All your advice are solid. I followed your method for my second painting and it turned out worlds better than my first attempt the week before. To those who follow your channel but are afraid to try oil paint, I say go for it. I started with acrylic and the thought of using oil paint scared me. But the fast drying time of acrylic made me sloppy because i was actually a slower painter than I thought. So i bought a cheap set of faber castell oil paints, oil painting paper and two 1-dollar brushes. The slow drying time was perfect. I can take my time and fool around with mixing, blending and repairing mistakes. When i was done i just cleaned my hands n brush with cooking oil. Works better than hardware store thinners, hahah. The painting took about 8 days to fully dry but the result made me happy so I didnt mind it at all. I'm glad i tried and I now look forward to painting more.

How do you avoid the paint grabbing at the canvas... in other words, how do you get the paint to spread so easily?
@dustpan458
@dustpan458 6 жыл бұрын
Aidan Collett you can achieve that by sanding down the canvas texture and adding 2 coats of primer, or how many coats you want! Just like she did

Okai its your style and i have been only one year painting... And sorry if it sounds ignorant or something... But wouldn't be easier if you used like a base colour and then retouch it until it is more realistic? I find it very difficult, almost impossible, the way you do it. I am confused, I guess its your technique :) I remember my teacher didn't show me to paint like this, that is why I am asking if this is the most appropiate 'way to paint' or there are other ways more easy, i hope you know. I want to know what are your thoughts about paint first with one base colour and then retouch it and what tips would you give (if you want :) Cheers! P. S. Didnt mean to sound hater or something, I find it fascinating and you do a good work. But I wanted to solve the question I had in mind. Hope you didnt take the commentary bad, its very difficult nowadays to question the things without people getting angry :( Love and hugs from Spain! Xoxo

Commonly you will take a few basic shades apply and than add more tones and details. So, in the end work will be quite cake ish. This girl nailed it in almost one layer. That's amazing but not a "proper" way to do.

You are amazing! I try painting a lot because I have a table downstairs with a blue mat over it, but they don't come out good usually because it is very messy, the cleaner is grey, the towel is dirty, the table is full of supplies, the brushes are not clean, most are hardened, and have blue paint camouflaged in them which usually leaves blue paint on my fingers all of a sudden.

regina olivia : you could cheat and use a .7mm oil based paint pen. Or, if you buy nail polish that comes in the small bottle specifically for nail art design or striping, those brushes work well for lashes!
