In my "never ending cycle" around the world I came across Slab City, certainly one of the most interesting place I've ever set foot on. I interviewed my hosts as I though their unusual way of living might be of public interest. The interview is pretty much uncut so that you can make up your own mind about it without my interference.

I just bought a compound in Death Valley, and I was sort of questioning my life choices...until I watched this. These people totally validated my vision for a funky, scrappy bohemian encampment built with found objects, art and love ❤️ Thank you, Rabbitside! You guys are awesome, and a huge inspiration...I can only hope to build something half as charming as what you have made.

@Eric Hansen LMAO. Can down Eric. What's going on in your life that you felt it necessary to make such a horrible comment to another person? She didn't say she was homeless. She didn't say she lived in the desert. She didn't say she was a drug addict or a criminal. All she said it's at one point in life she didn't have a significant other and was raising her kids all on her own which made money into something if very low supply. And she said when she didn't have money that much since she was a single mom, that she did the best with what she had and instead of buying stuff like toys, they maybe built their own tots and became more imaginative. That's all. Being imaginative and doing a lot with a little and making the best of everything makes her and her children bums? I would strongly hope you're just a troll and your just putting your comment up there because you need attention because your family pays no attention to you right now. So you choose to put provocative comments online so people reply to you so you can feel the attention that you're missing in life. Try to be more friendly and understanding and naive you'll get people to actually notice you more because it seems that currently you're acting so much like an ass that people just ignore you and leave you wanting love anywhere you can get it. And if you can't get life then any attention is good attention to you. Goodluck with your life man. And Eric, one more thing my boy, considering that you're a guy, (assuming you are based on your name) don't be such a jerk to females. Don't pick on people that can't depend themselves. If you wanna be a big shot with a big mouth, try it against someone your own size in real life not on the internet and let me know how that turned out for you. You big dummy. 🤣🤣🤣

I've been binge-watching everything available on Slap City. There are many fascinating, wonderful people here (among a large swathe of “crazies" and down-and-outers), but these two of Rabbitside are, to me, by far the most balanced , together, and clear-headed I've seen. Such impressive ingenuity and "touch" they have. It's refreshing to hear them speak after hearing so many troubled, confused words reflecting the mean, hard past of the struggling individuals who inhabit the City. Can't wait to peruse their channel.

He is the one that works at Walmart etc. and who we are referencing in this video. Here’s another video someone did about us that shows both Ryan and Peter, to help clarify. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h69ynZR5xrzDm4U.html Thanks for watching and sorry for any confusion about the Peter/Ryan thing, we certainly mention he is a third party but perhaps the way this video was cut doesn’t include that part clearly. :)

This is the best Slab vid I've seen. They're often pretty lame, but I learned stuff like where they get water and how it changes with the seasons. Thanks for just letting people tell their story. What a nice living space. It never ceases to amaze me what that allusive talent is some people have to just arrange stuff in an inviting, artistic way. These people are absolutely fascinating. They are far more interesting than a concocted mundane documentary. Their real life experiences presented in a genuine and animated, yet entertaining and informative manner lends credence to the existence and related tribulations that they've endured and continue to do. I had often considered going off the grid since retiring. Unfortunately, Slab City would not be my choice, having been born in Alaska and raised in "snow country" most of my life. I'm also obligated to continue caring for my seriously disabled spouse, and she could not survive off the grid with no access to health care when needed. I am so pleased that I stumbled upon this video. Give these folks my two thumbs up. Peter and Jessica, you are astounding people.

The slabs are an old Marine Base that was called Camp Dunlap. Camp Dunlap was a U.S. Marine Corps base activated on 15 October 1942, as a training facility during World War II. The camp was named for Brigadier General Robert H. Dunlap. It was used to train artillery and anti-aircraft units of the Fleet Marine Force. The base was located at the present-day location of Slab City (also known as The Slabs) in Imperial County, California. On 29 August 1951, the state lands commission approved sale of the 11,342 acres to the Navy at $1.20 per acre, with the state retaining the mineral rights, and with the understanding that the land would revert to the state when the Navy abandons it. In October 1961, the United States Department of Defense conveyed the land on which Camp Dunlap was situated back to the State of California. The "Military base" on the other side of the mountain is called Camp Billy Machen! It is a new Navy SEAL desert warfare training facility, located on the edge of the Chocolate Mountains. 29 Palms, or Twentynine Palms, arguably the worse base to be stationed at in the entire Marine Corps! Is also close by and does desert warfare training. In all my years there has never been a mock up mosque, only what we refer to as "combat towns". The Combat towns are for bombing and for infantry troops to sweep and clear. Not to single out or pick on @Rabbitside, I really like them and I am also a avid subscriber to their awesome channel, but SO many people are misinformed on what was there, why it moved and what goes on now. Slab city, which I love, is in absolutely zero danger of being mistaken for a combat town or stray ordinance. That being said old ordinance from decades gone by can and has been found nearby. Remember it WAS at one time a training area for Marines around WW II. Accuracy tech has long been improved. Again arguably from a Marine Veteran, Camp Swab and the Northern Training Area on Okinawa Japan are also the absolute worse duty stations in the Marine Corps, and for Navy personnel. GO RABBITSIDE, KEEP UP THE POSITIVE! From an aging Marine and Army veteran. Yes the Marines are under the department of the Navy, as we playfully play with all other service branches, The Men's department.

@Edward J uh, no. i'm an adult who is also a dropout, hello! i have no intention of taking advice from someone who discredits others efforts nilly willy, because if you were any nicer or any smarter you'd be able to realize that being able to do something like this takes effort and a good amount of mental strength. you should be doing something more productive than looking down on others who have a different lifestyle than you. seriously, taking care of that many animals and being able to fix things up with what you have? not everyone can do that. it's a chore, dude, doing that day in and day out. that is by no means lazy, and they do by no means have a lack of motivation. i rest my case.

I was born in the Mojave Desert at a Weapons Training Facility (my dad was Navy) but we moved away when I was only a few weeks old. I’m 62 and I’ve never seen where I was born. I plan to be in the area in January and would love to visit for a short time. I am laid back and cool and believe in personal freedom! I hope I get to meet you two! Thank you for the tour!

What a very lovely couple, so natural and friendly, love their life, and all their collections, but not the clown picture. I can see lots more places like this being filled up with people in years to come, maybe this is how humanity will end up living like all over the world in the future? I always imagined myself living similar to this when the kids leave home, still keeping in touch with my family, but living a more self sufficient life, etc, but bad health stops me from doing this. I admire these kind of people, because they have the courage to live how they want to and they're happy.

I have thoroughly enjoyed your presentation. 🐓I greatly admire your independence and freedom and respect for life. 🌞 I am a collector just like Jessica. I treasure my finds. Your self sustainability is very impressive. I would love to meet both of you and your pets. My weather conditions are the exact opposite. 🥶 My house faces due North 2 miles away from the shoreline of Lake Erie. We get the Arctic winds that cross through Alaska and come over 🇨🇦 Canada to the shores of Lake Erie and beyond. I just went outside and collected huge chunks and shards of ice 🧊 that fell from the front gutter. When the chunks of ice let go and fall it sounded like “incoming.” 😱🥶 The noise was so loud yesterday I thought someone was sliding down the roof of my house every time a huge chunk let go. ☃️🍙 I look forward to more videos from you. Have a wonderful new year.
