Darius Rucker from 'Hootie & the Blowfish' on His Path to Country + Dicky Barrett & Pete Parada

Adam welcomes consummate singer Darius Rucker to the show for a nuanced and entertaining look at his life and career as he’s about to release a new album. Darius grew up with a single mom and even though his father was mostly absent from his life, we learn of some audacious requests from him once Darius found success. We discover his initial love for music, how ‘Hootie & the Blowfish’ was created with college buddies, and the trajectory of being successful and talented as a black man not necessarily fitting into specific molds of where people expect others should be. He mentions being the butt of SNL jokes, and on the brighter side some epic rockstar parties.
Next, Adam welcomes more music greats; Dicky Barrett and Pete Parada who created a new band together, ‘The Defiant’. They came together over their shared experiences of the abrupt ways in which they were both kicked out of their previous bands. When mob mentality turned on them, they found common ground together and have lots to say about the state of today and the last few years.
Chris introduces the news with a clip from Vivek Ramaswamy from the first Republican presidential debate which segues into an interview from Adam 15 years prior that was remarkably similar. They also discuss a recent Tucker Carlson interview with Trump that garnered hundreds of millions of views.

I have noticed in the UK that pubs (bars) have either closed, been taken over by mirthless chains or turned into gastro pubs Pubs used to be where local communities gathered and talked, shared views, shared complaints and most importantly laughed at the clowns that rule over us Lawyers played darts with plasterers, black and white mixed quite naturally and although the atmosphere, smoke filled back then was certainly highly masculine, women were always treated with utmost respect. A pub landlord did far more than a guy pulling pints, he was a social worker without realizing it, a fount of local knowledge and introductions, a sounding board for ideas In 30 years that has been almost entirely destroyed. It's a damned shame.

Years ago it was a Saturday night and I go to my usual place. I go to the bar and order a beer and while I am standing there, a dude drinking a beer says something and we strike up a 5-minute conversation. I think to myself... I like this dude. Cool dude. An hour later, that dude is the singer of the band. Six months later... Hootie and the Blowfish blow up. No doubt in my mind there are a thousand people with the same story as mine. This guy is 100% genuine. Good on you Darious.

Seriously take a look at the economy and the way we've been going. Yes. She works like some of these large hedge funds do. She gets your account connected to hers in real time so any stuff she does in hers reflects in yours immediately. it's quite an easy process to set up since she explains the process quite well. It's makes it transparent since you don't get to hand funds over to her and can opt out when you feel you are not getting the best results. I have not seen a single reason not to stick with her anyways. And to think that I've seen so much as $430000 in after tax gains till date is what marvels me the most.

Gotta disagree w you on the failure of the man show Adam. Yes, you guys were great bcuz you were friends but they didn’t just “put two dudes together”. Rogan & Stanhope were friends too, and they were really invested in making it work. They did a lot of extra work behind the scenes to come up with creative stuff, but the suits at the network put the kabash on all their ideas, and suffocated the process in such a way that they couldn’t get their best ideas out. They had a leash on them, and very little creative freedom. Rogan & Stanhope talk about this at length in a lot of the old JRE episodes. You oughta have them both on to talk about it! That would be epic!

Big fan of Adam, been listening to the podcast since day 1. However, it seems the show has changed recently in that (1) he seems to be consistently more right wing, in a "following the right winger playbook" kinda way and (2) he seems to be surrounding himself with others that agree with him on these topics. So some episodes (but not all) are a lot "see how right we are and how stupid everyone else is" agreement-fest. For me this makes for an uninteresting talk show, regardless of whether the people are on the right or on the left. Maybe Gina and Bald Bryan helped keep that in check a bit and now that they're gone it's been running more rampant? Or perhaps Adam recognizes that many see him as a voice of the right and he has leaned into it as a smart career move. Not sure.
