Farya Faraji

Ай бұрын

Music & vocals by Farya Faraji. Please note that this isn't reconstructed Achaemenid era music, it's entirely modern Iranian music sung to Old Persian lyrics from that era.
The lyrics are part of the Behistun inscriptions in Kermanshah, Iran, a monumental set of rock reliefs and inscriptions written inside Mount Behistun not long after the coronation of Darius I as emperor of the Achaemenid Empire.
The music uses a variation of Segah, one of our traditional modes and one of our most microtonal ones. The melody modulates between Segah and Shur from time to time. I also employed a technique of playing the tanbour found most often in Eastern Iran and especially Iranian Turkmenistan, the latter region in which I grew up as a child. Iranians in these regions play the dotar using parallel fifths, which gives it a distinct sound to the purely monophonic forms of playing found in other parts of the country. The instruments used are the tar, the dotar, the oud, the ney and the daf drums.
Lyrics in Old Persian:
Thâtiy \ Dâra yavauš \ xšâyathiya \ imâ \ dahyâva \ tyâ \ manâ \ patiyâita \ vašnâ \ Auramazdâha \ manâ \ badakâ \ âhatâ \ manâ \ bâjim \ abaratâ
Hya \ âgariya \ âha \ avam \ u
bartam \ abaram \ hya \ arika \ âha \ avam \ ufrastam \ aparsam
English translation:
King Darius says: These are the countries which are subject to me; by the grace of Ahuramazda they became subject to me; they brought tribute unto me.
Within these lands, whosoever was a friend, him have I surely protected; whosoever was hostile, him have I utterly destroyed.

In the face of the severe repression and indifference of the occupying Islamic regime of Iran towards Iran's ancient history, your hard work has prevented the glorious heritage of Iran from being forgotten. Came here after seeing the video about Orientalist music. Safe to say that I'm only questioning why this music isn't more present in western media now. The microtonality of the mode used here isn't even that jarring, and in fact I even prefer this flavor over the stereotypical Orientalist kind of music. I could easily see this song replace the usual soundtrack for a climactic moment in a film or game, especially since it has such a strong central hook much like any memorable song. Catch me humming or singing to this for a while xD

@@mennyboy1528 Just like Herodotus, Ctesias claims that Cyrus the great died fighting Iranian tribal people except that instead of Massagetaes in central Asia (which as you can see in Cyrus the great conquest maps and Darius the great's inscriptions was already part of the empire), Cyrus fought Iranian people called Derebices/Derbikes reinforced by troops from Indian lands, in Tabaristan (where I live) satrapy of Hyrcania According to Ctesias, Amoraeus and his two sons, led a rebellion against Cyrus and allied themselves with Indians (probably from Indus valley which a large part of it was conquered by Cyrus and later the rest was conquered by Darius), Cyrus personally went to Hyrcania to crush this rebellion Hyrcania was way closer to Cyrus capital than central Asia was, and don't forget that Cyrus was 70 years old when he died and couldn't go in the middle of central Asia from the south of modern day Iran at that age back then, therefore it makes more sense if his last battle was actually in Hyrcania which isn't that far The two armies fought each other in a battle but none of them got the upper hand until the Derbikes elephants (provided by Indians) that were placed in ambush, attacked the Achaemenid cavalry and caused Cyrus to fall off his horse due to the horse panicking An enemy soldier throwed a javelin at him when he was still on the ground, which mortally wounded him, but, he didn't die right there The Achaemenid troops quickly reorganised, held their ground and Cyrus Javidan/Immortal guard, shielded and returned him to their camp to get treated while the rest of his men repelled the Derbike army The first day of the battle seems to have been a tie and probably both armies went back to their camps by nightfall with both sides suffering heavy casualties One of Cyrus satraps, Amorges, a Saka/Scythian king, came to his aid and reinforced his army with 20,000 Saka cavalry This helped the Achaemenid army to turn the tides to Cyrus favor and win the battle which resulted in death of the Derbike king, Amoraeus, and both his sons The Achaemenids lost around 10,000 men while the Derbikes lost 30,000 Cyrus declared Kambiz/Kambujiye/Cambyses, as his successor and died three days later after his final battle due to that javelin wound and was burried in his tomb in Pasargad/Pasargadae I'll explain why this story makes more sense in my next comment but it's going to be long

I wanted to say something profound, but the words escape me. All I can say is your fusion of the old and the new homages your nation and people and culture so beautifully. I'm curious to what an Iranian song about crossing the Chinvat to Garo Demana would sound like. (please forgive if I'm butchering the reference.)

The Duduk goes hard. Jokes aside, the actual instruments you use sound awesome, and I'll definitely be jamming to this on my way to work tomorrow.

It’s hard to describe but I don’t think I’ve heard this in my life. Something about it tickles my ears in such a weird but good way!

I wish I could take a time machine and visit Achaemenid Iran. Want to see what Persepolis might have looked like in its glory. 🌟

I still think how sad it is the conditions of the actual Iran compared to the old Achaemenid empire, good thing Cyrus or Dario cannot see it

I know the music is modern, but the lyrics make me feel something strange yet familiar deep inside my bones. To know my brothers and sisters, Persian and non Persian are all connected by the awe of beautiful music, well, it makes me feel lucky to be alive during a time such as this 🥰 Much love to you the musician and much love to my brothers and sisters in sound, wherever in the world you are! 🌎🥰💕
