-------
It is nearly impossible to trace the roots of this extremely popular Russian song!
It has been covered by so many singers and bands worldwide in the past 100 years and it has now mutated so much from its original state that it could probably be considered a folk song!.. In Russia itself, it was adopted in particular by gypsy street musicians, which is why it is often considered a "Russian Gypsy" folk song.
These days it is also known as a jazz standard.
According to Wikipedia, "in "The Book of World-famous Music: Classical, Popular, and Folk", published in 2000, the author, J.Fuld, mentions that a Soviet musicologist had reported to him that the song is not "a Russian Traditional song but a cabaret song", published in a songs book by A. Gutheil in 1897 and mentioned, at p. 131, as a "Gypsy romance based on the melody of Florian Hermann's Valse Hommage. The most renowned and played version of this song was written by Adalgiso Ferraris, and published, when still in Russia in 1910, with German editor Otto Kuhl, as Schwarze Augen (Black Eyes)"

It's funny, I have absolutely no reason to believe that any of my family were gypsies, but since I was small child, the violin has always had my full attention start to finish. Something about how it sounds so sad but beautiful, the way your violin weeps the notes, bleeds them in such an orderly fashion, it captivates me mentally and emotionally, and any great violin solo , the sadness brings me this feeling of inexplicable joy. I have lived what 99% of people would probably judge as a very harsh life , but this beauty, Paganini since I was a kid, the gypsy orchestra , countless other people, it brings such peace to my war torn heart that I can't justly describe it, it activates me on all levels, thank you so much a thousand times, I will always play this even though I plan on exploring other versions too, this is already my favorite, somehow it felt familiar, from a young orphan left alone too early struggling to start a business, make family proud, this helps me so much every day.

I did not grow-up in Russia, however, also grew-up with this composition. Your rendition is hardly weird, because I play it on the piano also, and this music is one of those that has 1001 wonderful way to play it. The musical elements are indelible no matter how it is performed. Two guitars or dark eyes it is always a winner.

I am fascinated with your interpretation, this melody is presently my obsession and I often search for different interpretations over internet, my search brought me here to yours and I absolutely loved it!!! This melody is amazing for me, I am the kind of person who thinks music is a language, despite languages can be not understanding by our brains, to me no matter what language it is, music speaks to me, music to me is the language of our souls 😍... this melody is so Intense so passionate so rough.. so soft.... I keep finding more words to describe the emotions that this melody express... you are simply amazing I love your arrangements 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 thank you .. 💋❤️😍👍🏼😉

Dear Dunja, thank you, amazingly beautiful. i was born in West region of Slovenia that was during the 2WW occupied by fascist Italy. All my adult life my residence is on the beautiful West Coat of Canada, on the pacific Ocean. My professional career took me all over the World, mainly to to extraordinary beautiful Santiago de Chile and Argentina. Latinos-Spanish being a romantic language they have amazing music, full of loving words, always full of love and laughter and happiness. On the other side, our Slavic-Russian-Gypsy music penetrates the heart, brings one to tears...nostalgia...My question: Are we the Slavs cursed or blessed to be what we are? Let's not forget that the Russian Empire has been around for a Millennial. Let's not forget to thank the Czars who ruled over the great territory that makes up Russia, a home of a hundred ethnic nations and great world religions. Let's us not forget to thank Russia to preserve the Gypsy's, so that we can listen to this beyond descriptions music. With Love from Canada.

I have heard different versions of this - jazz, Russian folk style, classical - this is one of the best, Dunja! Love your arrangement and playfulness on this tune. Love your smile, like you are saying "Yeah, this is good, but just you wait and see what more lies ahead!" Love your energetic intro, then a nice heartfelt slower, then the clip-clop percussive of the piano and your faster and faster pace! Bravo, Maestra!

Russian popular authentic folk gypsy romance and i think it's very complex so very difficult and impossible that saxonian or other compositors to compose this romance style because simply Russian can do it and its their Russian natural spirit ,then this thematic lyrics music is deszcent from Russian roots ......glory to all the Pan Rusky and Slavic world *****************************

Muito boa noite. Tenho a dizer, o seguinte: Magistral. Subscrevo-me respeitosamente Paulo Costa.

Dunja please sorry to ask so much, been looking but can't find a version with soul, onlyy "technical" of Shostakovich Waltz 2, maybe do you have some version of your own? That would be greatness. If not, thanks for the beautiful music and the effort you put on it since the prologue! (I know Ochi is a more personal song, many people grew up with it different versions and its a song of our hearts and whhat I'm asking is classical... but i adooooooooooooore dmitri!) --- hope you're ok, sorry AGAIN, my keyboard is making me crazy

I shared this to my FB with this comment: Yeah violin comes from Eastern Europe because it has that ... sad note in the sound... But how this lady plays it is sounds so clean and nice. I love her playing!!!! She takes the soapy heavy drama out of it and makes it into MUSIC that is pleasant to listen to and also educational and uplifting... The emotion is there but it is not overbearing The feeling is still light. Although it sometimes has sadness too... And sometimes it sounds too "linear" LOL She makes it into .... aerobics and catching train on time :) ANd sometimes it sounds so gentle and loving... Conclusion: Eastern Europe is COMPLEX :) As I research my own background, now, from far away and through the lens of many experiences.
