Professional match of StarCraft 2 between ShoWTimE and Dark where the German Protoss decides to go for Mass Archons in the late game. Rather than focusing on a Sky Toss based army he decides to face off against the Zerg mid game army without making that transition towards the conventional Carrier based army.

At 30:15 Dark loses 17 (117 to 100) supply in an instant. I think that a devastating disruptor hit during the battle on the left side (not pictured) is what prompts him to gg.

Once protoss meld into an archon they retain their old memories. If one of the melding protoss is much stronger than the other the stronger one can dominate the archon. The drawback of becoming an archon is that they burn through their own life energy to gain that increase in power. I don't remember if it was in LotV campaign or one of the sc2 books but there exists a dark archon made up of at least seven different protoss. He basically kept usurping more dark protoss and I believe consuming terrazine in order to not run out of life energy.

yep, if I recall correctly that dark archon was named Ulrezaj, and he hated the protoss from Aiur that exiled the dark templar with a burning passion. Normal two-templar archon is relatively unstable - Ulrezaj fused himself with seven or eight other dark templar and became a being of (literal) burning rage (the archon is called Ulrezaj too, since templar Ulrezaj is its strongest part). Ulrezaj then gathered some followers and when refugees from Aiur came to Shakuras after Aiur fell, they hunted and killed them for revenge until they were defeated by Zeratul (i think).

@@bb7344ulrezaj was trying to kill a preserver and that preserver locked him in some kind of rare crystal but he's still alive.

Most templars do not retain their sense of self, when they meld into an archon. Ulrezaj is quite a bit of an outliner in many ways, including the number of protoss he consumed.

)))well, zerglings called lings in short (obviously, if u try to use instead the 1st half "zerg" then its not going to do the job). And for the rest of the castita ont the contrary, only the first half is descriptive ( hydra(lysk), muta(lisk), etc). So when you want to shorten "ZerglingBaneling" it becomes "(zerg)LingBane(ling)". Yeah, its quite funny ))

15:05 One of the scrapped units from early development for SC2 was Twilight Archons which probably could only be made from a HT and DT merging. Makes me wonder how different they would have been from regular archons.

"hardly ever" not "nearly never" is the phrase you are looking for Lowko! Honestly though, "nearly never" is grammatically correct and is actually very funny! It's the sort of turn of phrase I'd expect in comedy dialogue

I think protos mech is the future of protoss late game. Warp prisms to stop them from running circles around you and skytal as your main fighting force.

i think the advantage of sending out the probe is that it gets the zerglings away from your mineral lines. you have one probe running around trying to stay alive, eating time the zerglings spend away from the working bases. though this is just a guess.

8:16 [medication kicks in] You know...They're all connected through the Kala until they sever themselves in SC2 like the Dark Templar. Templar probably see it as becoming a manifestation of the Kala's unity in the physical world by sacrificing each self to form a greater self. Not sure of dark templar motivations for Dark Archons. Dark sects can be power hungry, so maybe two DTs agree that they hate each other the least and they've both peaked, so why not go Archon and achieve greater heights of power?

Just an aside, why "nearly never" probably sounded so wrong is it feels similar to a double negative which is incorrect in English, though it is in fact not. The other alternative than the one you chose that was closer imho is "we rarely ever".

11:00 the trigger would be Dark not attacking. ShowTime has an army to counter Dark's current army. If Dark changes a follow up, the best place to be to know what the follow up will be, is to be in Dark's face. So: ShowTime has the counter army and wants to know Dark's next move, or force a continuation of Dark's current army composition. It's all there ... imo

Lowko, why cant hi-lvl protoss spare a few apm to add a few Sentries imamomg the Disruptors? Sentries can wall off enemy units while disruptor is immobile

Because 3 Sentries costs the same as 2 Distruptors which are always more useful. Ravagers can just break FF then Zerg a-moves & wins because Toss army is so much weaker.

Technically, but they can be overwhelmed with numbers, isolated with vipers, outgunned by ultras or just stopped by lurkers or broodlords (these ones in particular can just pick them apart from a distance). Ravager biles plus fungal growth can go a long way too.

The limitation is that they're expensive, have short range, and take up a lot of space so it's harder to get things where you want them to be.

Lowko you mentioned how Zeratul wouldn’t have been able to done much to assist at one point in the video. Do you think heroes could be a cool addition to SC2 PvP? (Similar to Warcraft mechanic) I’m not sure if you have ever expressed your thoughts about this topic.

Heroes would require sc2 being remade into completly different game in the gameplay aspect. But some more units like mothership ( hard limited in number as opposed to supply limited) might be an "addition"

If you are just going to morph them into Archons immediately, is it better to warp in Dark Templar or High Templar? I thought most people used High Templar, but ShoWTimE used DT's in this game. Was just curious.

depends if u have too many minerals or gas. Late game u usually have a mineral bank HT archons 100min 300gas DT archons 250/250

Dt archons are more expensive overall, but the cost 50 less gas while consuming 150 more minerals. So depends on the circumstances.

Lowko shows units lost at 23:20 and we can see how much more gas Showtime lost so limiting factor for his army in this intance would be gas. If you see him open tab later do tell.

It mostly depends in the unit you wanna rely on before you make archons (most players try to get some value out o it, befor morphing it). If you want psi storm to defeat masses of bio, or you want to harass with dt´s.

20 min high templar i thing is his answer to darks sudden acressive harassing few defensive storms are really good for it. High templars are soo slow. Not really so good for attack with warp prism yes but try walk them. Two storms and HT's are gone surrounded by zerk. No use to spend resources to storms untill y seem to need one.

Protoss is in a sorry state. Zealot, Stalker, Disrupter, Oracle, Archon, Dark Templar, going to tier 3 on 2 different tech paths, just to match zerg on tier 1.5 ling, bane, roach, ravager, even after protoss kills 20 drones early game.

Only Dark, Raynor and Serral are insane enough to even get to finals of big events now. Zerg just ain't got it like they used to. The biggest reason Zerg is in the dumpster trophy wise is because Serral being the best of all time just can't be given a fair unit comp or he'd never get touched. Kind of like Byun in his big moment forcing anti-Terran patches.

Just a little remark to Lowkos repeated 22 banelings per archon. Usually banelings boom on more than 1 archon. I think its fair to expect 22 banes will kill 2 archons in average, making the trade much less terrible.

The lore for archons is once they fuse, they are officially on like an hour ish life time lol they sacrifice themselves for the swarm... I mean for Aiur
