As with many places in Dover, the origin of this place is uncertain. What we do know is that it got its name from the DYERS business that took over the site in the 1930's (a.k.a Scott & Sons). Used as an air raid shelter during WW2, this was more recently used by a hovercraft company as storage. The site is now totally abandoned.
Inside the man-made cave we wind a well. The top of which (now covered) can be located at the site of the Grand Shaft Barracks on the cliff above.
In 1940 a woman by the name of Emily Foster who lived on St James Street, Dover was thrown from her house as an enemy bomb destroyed her home. Miraculously she survived unscathed. She decided to take residence inside Scott’s Cave. As fate would have it, Emily was tragically killed inside Scott’s Cave after an enemy bomber caused a chalk fall. Her body was not found for several days.
