The "when the chips are down...these civilized people will eat each other" line really hit home when we were in lockdown and look at how we acted over toilet paper and sanitizer... Look at how some of us acted when we saw someone around us without a mask on....That's what made this Joker so special... He was telling us a story about ourselves...and he was right...

My two favorite Joker moments have to be "I'm not crazy. I'm not." and when he's hanging out of the cop car window just relishing in all the chaos he's brought to Gotham Stellar breakdown. I recently rewatched the trilogy so I'm taking a stroll down memory lane with all these great breakdown vids.

Fun fact: When Heath grabbed Maggie's face, that wasn't scripted, so her initial reaction was genuine surprise. But since she's better than people give her credit for, she knew to roll with it and help give us an amazing scene.

@@ContactsNfilters Yeah. But at first she’s got her eyes squeezed shut. As the story goes on and he says how he did it to himself on purpose, that’s about when she starts staring at him. We don’t know what the character is actually thinking but if it wasn’t scripted for Heath to grab her face that way, and she just rolled with it, it was damned good improvisation to give us the varied range of reaction. To go from shutting him out by trying to turn her head and closing her eyes to not only opening them but staring at him not looking away. And then the fight in her comes out 😂😂 Bravo to Maggie.

I always loved the champagne detail. They both don't want the alcohol to muddle any of their senses. Opposite sides of the same coin that Dent flips between.

Or, the studio didn't want to depict drinking on screen in a movie aimed at a younger audience. As for Dent, the booze driped from his open cheek so none of the main characters drank alcohol on screen.

No matter how many superhero movies I watch, I always come back to this movie. It's not only the greatest superhero movie ever made, it's one of the greatest movies ever made. I find myself comparing all other action movies to it. I don't know if the superhero genre will ever produce another movie as good as this one. I'm looking forward to the day when I can introduce this film to my kids. I know they will love it as much as I do.

One thing I realized only kinda recently is that both M. and J. Gyllenhaal were cast opposite Heath Ledger in memorable films and both had charged and intense scenes with the late actor and reflected fondly on working alongside him during his posthumous recognitions for TDK. It's always something that will connect the siblings on not just a professional level but on a deeply transcendent one too.

15 years and my love for this movie is strong as ever. Every time I watch it, it's like the first time. Ledger was brilliant. One of my favourite non-Joker moments was how Bruce calmly dispatched the henchman in the Penthouse and disassembled his weapon. Badass moment.

This was my papas favorite movie. I was adopted by my grandparents, so my grandpa was basically my dad, and he *loved* this film, in turn it became my favorite film. We went to see this when it released and watched it once a week when it came out on blu-ray, it was our thing lol. But Heath Ledger was my favorite actor before this, so as a kid, i was actually extremely hyped that Heath was Joker. And I was absolutely mesmerized by his performance. He just felt unhinged, chaotic and crazy, yet every single thing he did was calculated and he didn't waste a single movement. This was *not Batman's film,* this was the Joker's film, and it did not disappoint.

That's exactly what I have been saying since the first time I saw this film, that the Joker was the main character not Batman and I was so in awe of Heath Ledger's performance that I watched the whole thing back to back for 3 straight days. And it's been my favorite movie ever since then. There's not a single flaw in the way he played that role, and I would definitely never want to be any of the actors who have to try to follow that performance in a Joker role that's for sure!

There is also an interesting parallel between the Joker's face reveal at the beginning of the movie, and Gordon's reveal when he arrests him: both characters don't say a word during those scenes as long as their faces are covered, communicating with other characters only by nods and hand gestures.

The reason the opening scene was in the daytime was the Joker knew Batman patrolled at night and there'd be less chance of them running into each other yet. Joker already studied Batman closer than anyone at this point

He and Nicolson talked about the part. its what lead Ledger to isolate himself to prepare for the part. Nicolson told him basically that to play the role of Joker, you have to bring yourself to a very dark place. Ledger's dedication and passion put into his role is 100% what lead to his unfortunate death.

One thing that always bugged me about the sequel, is that Harvey died at the end of the Dark Knight. I feel that they built up enough to where he survived the fall, but was just knocked unconscious. Maroni remarks earlier "From this height the fall wouldn't kill me." Batman even falls from the same height and is fine. How I feel it should have played out, Harvey himself was declared dead and Two-Face is instead taken and basically buried in Arkham in a cell so they can enforce the Dent Act. Because if they let a living Harvey Dent tell his story, everything would be undone. So they faked his death. It would have hit so much more if we got a scene where Bane releases criminals from both Blackgate and Arkham, instead of HIM reading Gordons speech, it's Harvey reading it. Because honestly, it's just the populace taking a terrorists word that it was a speech that Gordon wrote, but seeing that Harvey was alive would have broken their faith in the system even more.

Great deep dive...just found this channel and will definitely stay tuned. One theme you touched on was the reference to dogs as relates to the Joker's cynicism, the perception of him as a dog "chasing cars", and maybe another reference or two. There is the scene where Batman is attacked by Rottweilers, who were owned by the drug dealer that Joker later fed to his own dogs. Towards the end of the movie, you can hear dogs being let loose in pursuit of Batman as he returns to being public enemy #1. My interpretation is that dogs, contrary to what you highlighted about the Joker, are creatures which are seemingly of order but chaotic underneath. They listen to us, we trust them around our families, and they make us feel safer in most instances. Yet under the right circumstances (all they need is a push), dogs are vicious, unpredictable, and prone to revert back to animalistic survival instincts. Maybe this is meant to parallel humanity, as we cling to a semblance of order which masks our natural tendencies. Just like canines, the two parties in the ferryboat experiment ultimately chose not to divert from the pack when all was on the line. Probably a stretch, but dogs in movies always make me think of Anubis, who had the body of a man and the head of a jackal (joker) or dog. Anubis and Joker both ushered souls into the underworld and ruled over darkness.

That detail at 46:19 was something I missed. The way that the Joker moved around the set, as he talked to both sides of Harvey Dent, appealing to both his halves is BRILLIANT. It's like one talking to the angel and devil on each shoulder and the Joker is able to convince both sides. I also like the orientation of the camera going clockwise and counter clockwise to represent something like a pendant going back and forth in the Racheal and Joker scene. The framing of the character on the right side and on the left is also a great touch. Amazing breakdown, and I've watched a lot of breakdowns on this film. The Dark Knight is such a huge influencial film that the Joker scene was used in my film class text books as the cover, Movies and Meaning an Intorduction to Film fifth edition.

I always took the dogs chasing cars metaphor for The Joker as him being an absurdly intelligent psychopath who has a goal and goes after it 100% like an unstoppable machine and as soon as he misses his target immediately has another one in his eyeline and has another plan to make that happen and over and over again. He is chaos. He doesn't necessarily have a plan B but snaps right into it as soon as plan A is off the board. He's always running and causing chaos and he's so smart his off the cuff stuff looks like a genius well planned masterpiece.

Fun fact: For the interrogation scene, Heath asked Bale to actually punch him to make the scene feel realistic in terms of the growing tension of the scene. So now whenever you see that scene where Batman is punching Joker, he's really punching him.

I remember seeing this for the first time on IMAX, and when the Joker said, “…Stranger”, instead of being focused on the front speakers like most dialogue, it lit up EVERY speaker. Truly an iconic moment.

They should have run it for a whole week but they only did it for one day. Sounds like you didn’t know or couldn’t go? 😕. I recall when I first went to see this movie, it was one of my earliest memories of seeing an entire audience clap loudly at the end. We all knew even on first viewing that the hype was surpassed and we witnesses to something truly special. My favorite part of this film is that when The Joker is taunting Two-Face into shooting him the hospital, after his talking about 'schemers' ... Joker has his finger blocking the hammer so the gun wouldn't go off even if Two-Face pulled the trigger. Yes, the Joker ACTS like a wild-card, but he's always in control, little left to chance. Ledgers take on this character isn't just the best portrayal of the character ever, but one of the greatest villains ever put to screen. Brilliant work, and a man who left us far too soon. Another OUTSTANDING Deep Dive, Erik! I particularly loved the bit about "The Shrinking Pie Game" ... that's the kind of stuff I love you highlighting in these analyses! Edit: Something I just noticed ... the Joker, unlike many psychopaths and serial killers, doesn't have an MO. He never does anything the same way. He kills with whatever will suit the situation. Also: The Joker having contingencies is something that happens in poker, too. You play the cards you have, but particularly in Texas Hold 'Em, your play also factors in how many 'outs' you have, draws to the cards you need for a winning hand.

Thank you for all the hard work that goes into your videos. I really appreciate the efforts film makes put into their craft knowing most people won't even notice. And sometimes it manipulates the audience without them even being aware. I like to think I am quite good at spotting these clever details, but you never fail in pointing out many many details that I had missed, and that just makes me enjoy the movie more, and appreciate the director/artist's work even more! This (briliiant!) breakdown further makes me feel that The Joker had to be some sort of CIA agent or something prior to his time in the makeup. He's a tactician, inline with Ra's and Bane. Many steps ahead, very specific about his choices, seemingly trained to take down local governments; a master at manipulation, infiltration, and subterfuge. AND he has weapons and demolitions training.

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, if you look carefully, joker's red lip makeup acutally mirrors the Bst Signal, the vertical wrinkles at the side of his mouth form the fingers in the bat's wings, the points of his top lip forming the bat' ears.

The scene where the Joker tells the second scar origin story to Rachel is one of my favorite scenes in cinema history. I also can’t help but think about how Ledger’s Joker remarks on Maggie Gyllenhaal’s beauty in this scene and just a few years before Ledger had played the lover of Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain, so he finds both Gyllenhaals attractive lol. Probably a pointless comparison but it just makes me smile

Just rewatched this a few weeks ago with my parents. I was struck by my mom hanging on to me mouthing the lines the same way everyone hung on to the Joker's stories. I probably owe them an apology from last Christmas where they had to wake up to me sleeping my Ledger Joker shirt lmao. But he's my fave, always. This was SUCH an incredible deep dive, although right at the end there Voss said Harvey's son instead of Gordon's son. Made me smile, our mans is human

I have and believe I Always will, that Heath Ledgers role as the Joker was not only the Best Performance in Movie History, but NOBODY will Ever be able to even come close to even Any consideration of anything or anybody whatever the role or actor. For me, it was the Greatest Performance in All Motion Picture History and I am still So bereaved that he is Gone and Most infuriated that he couldn't even be there for the movie release and know and enjoy even just a few months of the Supernatural-like obsession the World had for him and his rendition of the "Joker." And the same is felt over Joaquin Phoenix's "Joker" which are two different roles though Phoenix got to enjoy his Fame and deservedly so.

When I lost everything after my accident and became homeless. Opened my eyes to see how cruel the world really is. So, I tell people. "We may cheer for Batman. In the end we really want to be Joker". Cause a job is an illusion. Once you lose that you're no different from the homeless people you may despise. That's when right and wrong is out the window. When you have to survive.

Joker was like a pro Poker player. Plans thoughtfully prepared for every scenario, ablility to shift his plan with the cards he's dealt, and the constant changing in story he tells and his smiling through hits paint his "Poker face". And besides, what's more chaotic than a Poker player not playing for the money?

He's not a true agent of chaos, but when he said "do I look like a guy with a plan?" he wasn't lying either. He doesn't have A plan, he'd never limit himself with just one. He has several plans and triggers them as he feels they are needed for his end goal.

Small detail I noticed: Right before Batman slams the Joker's face on the table, the Joker closes his eyes and braces for impact. I think he KNEW Batman was standing behind him and was waiting for the "introduction".

No, in those scenes Heath ledger actually had bale hit him because he wanted to scenes to be as authentic has possible, bale revealed this in an interview somewhere, but just goes to show why he’s the best joker and how much dedication he put into this role

The nature of chaos is deterministic. Chaos is the order of disorder. So this joker is the perfect example of it's movement. People tend to misinterpret chaotic systems, because they fear them, they challenge the most inherent premises of human reason. A dog chasing cars is a very proud and dedicated laborer, indeed.

The novelization of TDKR apparently has something alluding to the Joker wandering the halls of Arkham alone. I suppose that means he didn't take part in the great escape.🙃

Absolutely love this movie and as a Chicago native it means so much to me. A cool thing is that while the movie was being filmed the local news was reporting on the filming that was taking place at night and an early shot of Heath Ledger as the joker was seen on the local news. But they reported it as him in half makeup because nobody knew his iconic look yet.

Great video, not only did I learn some new facts about this incredible film like how the two wheels of the Batmobile are actually the wheels of the motorcycle; but how Joker gives people the illusion of freedom like he did to Harvey with the hammer. But also his goons that he hires to work for him, he grabs the vulnerable that possibly cannot think clearly making them easy prey. This video breaks down the Dark Knight has been fantastic and ever since you announced you would do a video about it, I've been so excited. Keep up the great work.

I have to give credit to Nolan for letting Dent take the first toss of the coin in the end. There's this little moment where it just looks like Dent hopes the coin will land on its crooked side. A fragment of his past self hoping he can be stopped.

I rewatched this movie a few months ago. When heath has the phony batman in the butcher shop, that growl before the “look at me” would be so intimidating. Phenomenal acting on ledger’s part.

Just thought about this, too: The Joker’s mask and his painted face can also be seen as a nod to the two faces used to represent theatrical performances. The Joker is ‘playing’ the role of a seasoned criminal, and Gotham is his ‘stage’, with different characters (Bruce, Rachel, Harvey, Alfred, etc) all part of the sequence of Acts being performed. Quite interesting.

I love this channel's deep dives. Almost like Erik is sitting and watching the film with me. I know that this community is also the perfect audience. That being said, you brought to memory(!) the things I never have had a satisfying answer to. 1) Gambol isn't the one who says: "You're crazy." The man in between the Joker and Gambol does. A flicker of a toothy smile just before "No I'm not" has Joker's eye contact with this mobster. 2) I hope I'm not the only one, but the pool hall ambush tells us just enough to sell what I believe the knife blade finally did. The Joker looks down at one of Gambol's men and asks "Why So Serious?" I believe the knife was used to deal Gambol a throat wound as the man visibly reacts to something he sees. Gambol falls out of frame BEFORE the Joker sheds the last of the plastic bags. So no blood on him. 3) Speaking of blood, there's none in the interrogation room. Not from the glass, not from the punches. Keeping away from a R rating is my guess. 4) If Lau is atop the money, and gets hit in the face with some of it...why don't we hear him scream? We hear the dogs barking very clearly, and nothing in the BG as Joker gets the phone out of his pocket. And some of the last of my thoughts: Two different scars=two different stories? Did the Joker "stack the deck" again (like w/ Rachel's location) with the ferries, each key could blow up its own boat? In the police station, did Joker stand in front of/among the metal filing cabinets to give him some cover? Thanks to ALL my fellow Deep Divers for reading this far!

this is a brilliant deep dive into the movie. The only observation I'd like to add is this: The rooftop scene where Dent, Gordon, and The Batman meet up early in the movie - make more of how each of the 3 are lit. Harvey Dent is subtly but deliberately in a brighter, white light. Batman is very dim and in the shadows. The lighting on Jim Gordon, however, falls somewhere between the 2.
