2023 UPDATE: Watch Erik Voss' even deeper analysis into The Dark Knight, and new secrets discovered in the Joker's makeup: • DARK KNIGHT BREAKDOWN:...
The Dark Knight (2008) full movie breakdown! What details did you miss in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight -- from Heath Ledger's masterful performance as the Joker, and how game theory inspired his plan... to the duality between Batman and Harvey Dent / Two-Face, and how Nolan's imagery quietly exposed that parallelism? To celebrate the tenth 10th ANNIVERSARY of the movie's premiere, Erik Voss rewatches The Dark Knight scene by scene and explains the missable craftsmanship that makes the movie unforgettable. What clues hint at the Joker's possible origin? Does the Joker hide in plain sight without his makeup earlier in the movie? What are the connections between The Dark Knight and its influences, like Michael Mann's Heat, Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, and Alan Moore's The Killing Joke?

42:00 You skipped an important theory that is highly likely. The detonators were not set to blow up the other ship, but instead the ship they are on. Similar to what happened when he gave the addresses for harvey and rachel. If the citizens blow themself up, everyone outside the boat will think the criminals did it and the joker wins. If the criminals blows themselves up, everyone thinks the citizens did it and they are frowned upon...and the joker wins.
@jjsmith706

I’ve always loved how the villains in Nolan’s trilogy were grounded in realism. Joker being the perfect nihilistic embodiment of this however, I thought Scarecrow was perfection. An understated but believable performance of a fantastical character, who wouldn’t be in anyones top 5 picks for a Batman villain in a feature film.

The odd thing is that Joker technically won. "The only sensible to go through life is without rules. And tonight you're going to break your one rule." Batman's one rule is that he won't kill. However, he kills Harvey Dent by shoving him off the building. Batman killed and therefore broke his one rule in order to save Gordon's son. At the same time, Batman continues to hold true to himself and continues to live life with his rule, but his hands are still bloody.

There's always more to appreciate in Ledger's performance even after watching the movie dozens of times. When he's telling the story to Gamble the first time I just noticed how he stop and kind of rolled his eyes as if he was really reflecting on the story as he's telling it. So subtle. So brilliant. I do wonder if this trilogy would be held in such high regard without Heath Ledger's Joker. Let's be honest, Dark Knight Rises was a let down and Batman Begins still had some growing to do. This is the best movie but it's also strengthened by a performance that overshadows every other performance.

I used to work in the building they filmed the Wayne Enterprises scenes and I walked in the same door hundreds of times! We had many interruptions due to the number of scenes filmed in and around the building. My first day at work, they were filming the crash scene nearby and I actually saw Bruce Wayne’s Lambo before it got smashed. It is still surreal to watch the movie many years later and see things that were common to me. I used to hear stories about Heath riding a skateboard around Chicago in full Joker makeup to pick up take out food. Still love this movie!

He also missed when the camera is angled just right to see only Harvey's right side of hos face (his unburnt side later on) and Batman showing only his left side while they chat. I remember I was finishing up college (I think I was in a class Senior year), when I read the article about him dying. This was just prior to Smart Phones getting huge, so had the "semi-basic" internet that was the bridge between the garbage grey scale "8 option internet" and the current full-on internet. This immediately got the class into a full on discussion I remember lol...everybody jumping on their laptops in class to read about it.

I’d like to add that just as Nolan attempted to justify Batman’s plausibility the same attention went to the Joker. Of course with this (possibly unplanned) makeup detail, but notice that the makeup slowly fades away, especially during the interrogation scene, and it only reappears when Joker would have had time to reapply it. It’s also brought up in a throwaway line that the Joker’s clothes don’t have any tags and someone quips “It’s like he made these himself” which is probably exactly what Joker did and how he has all these extravagant outfits. Nolan and Ledger tried to justify The Joker as much as they did Batman without going into the character’s backstory. It’s this attention to detail that makes me love Christopher Nolan’s films.

Ledger made this film! Definitely, my favorite " Joker" in the entire Batman franchise.It's a shame that he had passed so earlier in life. The "improvised" hospital explosion scene wasn't actually improvised. It was a beat that was scripted into the scene. Whenever a movie deals with practical explosions, no mistakes can be made, no one can stand still, if the explosion doesn't go off immediately you keep moving or else you could get seriously hurt or die. There is a deleted scene showing Joker entering the school bus driving by the hospital as it crumbles down, and he's just staring blankly forward, not paying the explosion any mind

33:17 Batman chose Rachel because that's what Dent and himself would of wanted. That's why dent was disappointed when batman got him and not Rachel. SoberBeatz That's great for fame and whatnot. But that doesn't equate to actors making more money. Actors get paid before the movie even comes out.

Completely untrue. Actors only get paid a certain amount before the movie comes out, then they make royalties off the movie afterwards.
