Supermassive Games is following up the critically acclaimed Until Dawn with a series of shorter but similar horror experiences. Up first in the Dark Pictures Anthology is the aquatic Man of Medan.
Like a Quantic Dream game, except good, Man of Medan really shines through in its co-op, where two players work together and sometimes spend large stretches of the story apart. And of course, if someone dies along the way, you can always blame them.

Oh wow!!! This is exactly what a game like Pathologic will benefit MASSIVELY from!!! Having 3 people playing in the game, while each tries to get their different ending, keeping their people alive, and eventually try to both learn how to work together AND keep your own interests at the top most priority. This is a good idea, I can see it implemented really well in certain potential games!

@mrcheesemunch

But if that's the case then that's just kind of boring since they already done that with Until Dawn. If the scares are shit the only reason to play the game is the challenge of keeping everyone alive, I guess. Hence why I never get these games because horror games are just kind of dreadful, almost as dreadful as horror movies in recent years. Here's hoping Resident Evil 8 is actually scary. Still mad about Silent Hills dammit.

I'll just give my own review. 1. good that decisions still matter, though they're either too predictable or too obscure. 2. the jumpscares are too frequent and cheap shots no one with horror experience will be scared by. 3. the characters are flat, uninteresting. Archetypes that don't really obviously evolve that much. Sometimes they also act out of character? Like the nerd of the bunch, who is actually often the most courageous of them all?

@@mrmoviemanic1 Well, there is something like that coming soon. I preordered the game and I got early access to what's called the Curator's Cut and, while it is essentially replaying the game over again, it does give you a new perspective on the story and that your choices do come up from your first playthrough. Granted, there was a major choice I didn't make that cost me a character, so hopefully they can patch it by the time the Cut is released for free later this year (hopefully by Halloween)

Which of the everyone survives endings did you get? And did that just include the main cast or others? There are a surprisingly large number of endings and ending variants in the game. And even more variations in how someone gets to each of them. Until Dawn is the better game imo, but Man of Medan is by far a more varied experience by far and I look forwards to seeing what they do in future games.

There's a board game called Nemesis, which is classified as "semi-coop". The mechanics of the game dictate, that you work together cooperatively to beat the game and survive, but players also have their own secret objectives they need to complete in order to win. These secret objectives (most of the time) go against what the other players need to do. So all in all you have an experience, where you need to work together as a team, but you can never 100% trust anyone, as they might secretly bee out for your blood. It's the first game I ever played with this "semi-coop" mechanic, it's a really fun idea, something the devs have been experimenting in this game too.

I would love to see a D&D game made in this fashion with the Coop in mind more about Roleplay than stats with options unique for each character. Maybe somebody can play with the DM and have different options to include things here or there or can see what both characters are doing so it becomes a 2-4 player with/against (depending on playstyle) a fifth in the Dungeon Master' shoes.

Playing Dead Space 3 in co-op is actually quite fun - especially when one of the players' character is having all sorts of crazy hallucinations while the other just sees this mad, screaming man talking to himself. One of the best asymetrical co-ops I've ever played. I beat the game as Isaac while my friend was playing as the other dude. The other dude has all sorts of weird hallucinations that only the player that's controlling him sees/interacts with. Meanwhile, I kept seeing the other dude grabbing random stuff off the ground and talk to himself (Isaac was getting creeped out by it as well). Pretty cool stuff.
@jack23325
@jack23325 4 жыл бұрын
I dig the idea of a shared horror experience where different players see different things. Dead space 3 did stuff like that with its coop and those were some of its best moments. My only problem with the game is that it's a bit too geared toward super fast qtes rather than gameplay, and the camera angles are awful sometimes. The "twist" was a little disappointing, but still had some good spooks. As it's the first in a set of 8 stories, I'm sure they'll improve the gameplay as it goes based on player response.

Why hasn't anyone come up with a dynamic co-op rpg that contains 8 characters each with a list of preset background templates, at least six potential endings unique to each character AND contributes to the overall outcome of the story? I'm not talking some text-based-graphic-novel-walking-sim-low-rez-16bit-shoestring-budget-jrpg-conception-date-game here either... No no no insignificant masses whom lack imagination... What i'm talking about is some: full-on, completely voiced, 3rd person, Resident Evil Outbreak/Dragons Dogma style combat that also possess unique puzzle solving to each characters background, situation, placement and goals. If someone can make a game like THAT and isn't a F2P "live service" cash grab or an MMO... Then they'd be a f*cking GOD.

@SnooDoodle I would be honored to take up the project but unfortunately i'm already committed to my first game and it's resurrecting the Tombi IP for next gen. No remake/reboot of the first two games... Just a straight up continuation into Tombi 3 ^.^ It's gonna have hand drawn animated cutscenes, a decent-experienced voice cast (i'll probably get David Tennant in as the 10,000 year old man or wacky NPC or something 'cause he's so hot right now!) 12 evil pigs with new elemental powers, aiming for just over 400 events, gonna try and make Charles and Tabby playable characters (no Zippo though... Not in MY game thank you very much!) and try to have some character growth for Tombi similar to how Jak transitioned into Jak & Daxter 2 (i'm thinking hand signs for communication and reaction rather than coherent speech 'cause he's a wild child XD) I've been working on this concept for about seven-eight years just writing down everything that i think fits into the world of Tombi while also trying to figure out sh!t like how to actually write game code and crap (which is beyond my understanding *scoff* 4 months of C++ became instant gibberish lol). I don't know sh!t about game design, coding or engine capabilities but i know what i like in gaming and i've been gaming since the 80's... So if a chance comes along and i end up getting the money, talent and license for this project 'then im committing everything i have to it.

It really reminds me of Until Dawn, Supermassive Games are really in tune when it comes to customizing outcomes for the sort of person playing. It is such a shame that Obscure and Obscure: The Aftermath went into a more cartoony Final Exam with Mighty Rocket Studio, it looks like there isn't any plan to continue that series...

it would be nice if there was a way to tell your friend what happened through the game not through microphone... like you are playing with a friend without a mic and you just sometimes hear something in game then the two characters meet in game and you can ask what happened, your friend would be able to choose answers... maybe there wouldn't be a time to ask sometimes and you just wouldn't know ever... like really roleplaying it

I think this comes down to a matter of taste. If you want to talk to each other even though your characters shouldn't be able to, sure that's fine. But if you want to like hard RP it and only communicate when you're together in-game, there's nothing stopping you from doing that as well.

@@cidcrisis well yes, if you wanted you still could you mic and talk to each other But these games are very cinematic, so using your voices instead of the characters would kinda break the atmosphere in my opinion... it's not the same as when you play some MMORPG with silent character and you talk instead of him

@@MrRys Right, I don't disagree. Just saying that's the kind of thing you can choose to do or not, depending on what kind of experience you want to have.

Consensus seems to be that the multiplayer is the best way to experience this game, especially if you're actively communicating with your co-op buddies, playing solo seems to be when people get too caught up on the camp and weird story progression.

I wonder if choices in this matter more than Until Dawn. UD was just "make a bunch of pointless 'choices' and it really doesn't matter if you get people killed becuase the same story will happen regardless with slight differences in voice lines, or someone just won't be there for a reaction shot cause they're dead"

The scariest part of this game is the facial expressions of the characters (mostly the eyes) o_o

I played the game solo. It took me about 5 hours to finish and I absolutely loved it. It has a faster pace than Until Dawn and the characters are less annoying.

I haven't played Until Dawn or Man of Medan, but I've seen Let's plays of both, and I got to say... Until Dawn was much better in my eyes. You can argue that it's because of a bigger budget, but... Until Dawn had more diverse areas with the cabin scenes, danger in the woods and the mines (MoM's areas almost all looked the same, except for some), the story was much more of a surprise as I was left guessing what was actually going on (MoM the story was clear from the start, before you even got the meet the main characters) and the scenes with the doctor and that changing room brought up soo many questions which all were answered splendidly (Whereas the scenes with the curator are only there for getting a hint). All of those amazing story-beats seemed to be missing in Man of Medan, and even though I liked what I saw, I honestly had hoped for more. I really hope that 'Little Hope' will be able to get closer to Until Dawn. Man of Medan was still a good story, and I'm interested to see where the anthology is going next... but I fear they might not surpass Until Dawn.

i probly won't play the online coop mode unless i decide to get a month of PS+ for MHW iceborne, but i'm sure the offline story will be a fun evening and I also plan on doing that "pass the controller" party mode with some friends so i'm thinking its definitely worth the 30$. I just hope I get to still play all the characters solo. (i think i do?)

This kind of game would drive me crazy. If someone dies, I would wipe my progress and restart the entire thing over and over again till everyone gets a happy ending.The jrpg gamer in me demands it.
