Which are you choosing Sentinel or Dark Ranger?

It has always felt like whoever ends up working on the hunter has a very sensible, restrained perspective on class design and the class suffers as a result.

Dark Ranger just needs to look cool, that's all, and they seem to have missed the boat on it

Oh man, this has me so dissappointed... You are absolutely right, this is not even close to enough. If you look at Sylvanas in HOTS and the withering fire effect, this is exactly what i was envisioning and i was hyped as fuck about this. This in itself made me think i go hunter main for the expansion. Also the dark hounds i thought is something like a spell effect, not a pet. Like this one proc effect of the boomkin where this wolf or whatever gets send out like a spellcast. I dont know its still alpha, but if they dont deliver on the fantasy for this, it does indeed fall flat on its face...

How is it that they got Dark Ranger SO wrong??? There's so much inspiration to draw from, it's actually ridiculous. These hero talents are about dealing shadow damage but the only form of shadow damage outside of the tree is Wailing Arrow, and it's like never picked... First of all I would recommend making Wailing Arrow instant, a skill shot AND toggleable so we can detonate it mid air (basically the version they have in HotS). Second of all, let the hero talents have some interaction with Wailing Arrow, enticing us more to pick it up when we're playing a Dark Ranger build.

thank you for running through this. i wish more content creators would run the through the hero talents like this. theme is very important for these hero talents to work. dark ranger just isnt even close. sentinel definitely overachieved against what i expected. nice stuff

People have echoed this, but Dark Ranger really only needed to be Cosmetic, more than most hero classes, that's what people wanted and expected. And this is just... so utterly disappointing

It's really weird that there isn't a single hero talent tree that has a gun theme considering that's half of hunter's identity

Another fix for MM would be to have a glyph to make sure Chimera shot always hit 1 target 2 times. Instead of potentially breaking CC in PVP. That, along with the magic damage being converted to shadow damage during black arrow window, and the visual to have 2 shadow chimera heads during the black arrow window.

Effects of most spells should change depending of hero talent tree. For example, Volley should looks like star arrows as Sentinel and should looks like raining shadows as Dark Ranger. That would be cool and strong class fantasy!

I'm glad to see hunters getting more magic oriented attacks. Sure, we have arcane shot but that's about it. The return of black arrow is pretty awesome. But I'm leaning more towards the sentinel path. The abilities seem stronger and honestly it just looks way cooler.

If your a dark ranger they should have a passive that you proc of banshee’s wrath cloaking the character in shadow making all damage shadow damage for 18 seconds triples spell shadow visuals and applies shadow effect / damage on hell hounds and doubles spawn rate. Banshees wrath would have a 15 sec cooldown. Making later more geared characters have more up time on banshees wrath. Leech effect would be removed from the game and instead have banshees fury when multi-shot is used during banshees wrath the cone of shots narrows by 90% and get 10% increased damage stacking up to 3 times. This essentially turns multi-shot into a 12 gauge shotgun with shadow rounds doing up to 30% increased damage during banshees wrath. I think this idea makes your character more like sylvannas in visual and also allows for a burst window adding that visual flavor

Dark ranger needs an ability that follows a spell that has a chance to spawn a skeletal warrior to attack targets with the black arrow applied to them, or even spawn one for x amount of time off a target that dies under black arrow. Isnt that what the spell did in WC3?

I love the chains give me sylvanas vs bolvar vibes but you're right is a useless pasive, they should make it an active skill

Yeah overall the hero talents visually are very underwhelming. They really should alter more of your rotational spells as well, if only just for the visuals. Like steady, aimed shot, rapid

Dark Arrow is literally the pre-melee SV hunter ability.

hunter is probably hard to make spell effects for without going over board and completely changing the class fantasy, but these both look underwhelming to me lol

Sentinel is great. It’s a shame visually that it’s locked in for night elf, but I’m definitely considering survival hunter for the sake of moon knight fun times.

The utter car crash of missed thematic opportunity with Dark Ranger is beyond belief. I do not understand how literally nothing is any good in this. They have SYLVANAS and an absolute truck tonne of fan engagement to execute this. Far out. This is insane that it wasn’t a home run on delivery.

I think survival should go back to the bow. Maybe some moves are melee with a side weapon of a dagger

Sentinel is very cool, but will look pretty stupid on non Nelf characters.

Looks like they just directly copied Sylvanas' kit from HotS. Which in HotS it is cool and fun to play. Where as in WoW it looks terrible and boring. Sentinel wins hands down.

Yeah wtf, i thought as dark ranger you could maybe transform into a banshie and maybe teleport like salvanas, ...all we get is a stupid arrow shot and a hound? I hope they update this...

Both of them look and feel the same old hunter. Yes, arcane looks slightly better, but in no way does it look visually impressive. IMO, they completely missed the mark on both of them !

They never nail hunters, wtf is this? Hunters use guns, bows, and traps, marksmanship is the fantasy you should go.

Hunter there. Gaining a charge of aimed/barbed is absolutley useless in pvp, coz you get 2 charges of aimed anyway and never spend em, and return 2 barbed after bestial wrath. Some pve vibes. Why cant they return kill shot arrow from shadowlands? Boomkins not the only one who struggle with new talents, Supa) Sentinel looks more interesting. I also dont get why mages can take gravity laps (which is basicly 30 sec stun where u can sheep) and other classes dont get any new cc? Also what about bm and surv, and bestial tree.

Neither because i main Dwarf hunter and both of these options do not fit on anything else than elves.

They both suck unless you like elves. I’ll be sticking with boring pack leader and just be happy I get a theme neutral option.

Hunter design has being absolutely dull since Legion. Cataclysm and Pandaria were peak WoW PvP. There's so much awesome stuff they can do and this is what they come up with.

put black arrow like it use to be in survival specc in MoP rpve specc. where black arrow had the chance in their DoT damage to reset explosive shot. and make Black arrow be 100% up time on target... or else no one will ever even chose that! i even wonder if u playing with lone wolf talent on MM specc. if u call a shadow hound, if he will remove the lone wolf buff because he counts as a summoning pet! i bet blizzard will never think about this one

MM needs a Ret-level or more re-work. They need to get away from spamming aimed shot and consider what a 'Ranger' fantasy could look like. There's nothing appealing about the current MM and it's class fantasy. Mechanically it feels dated, and the hero trees are not enough to fix this. Dark Ranger in particular is very, very disappointing.

Hero talents are already my least favorite thing of the expansion lol I hate to be negative but I feel like we’ve seen enough over the years to know that it will be a complete mess trying to balance all this. We’ll end up with one that’s clearly better and that’s what everyone will expect you to run. I wish the hero talents were just visuals only ex: Make rain of arrows look more shadowey (is that a word?) for Dark Ranger or more Sentinel flavored. Same with Aimed Shot and any other spell really. That way you could just focus on the aesthetic of the fantasy theme you choose but still play the same class. WoW was better when it was a bit more simple
