It'll be fascinating to see the next iteration, where White evinces a greater awareness of the problems he creates for himself with c4 and b3.

Nice example of how a deep understanding of a variation can lead to a win. Maghsoodloo kept accumulating small advantages while his opponent drifted, and those small advantages eventually added up!

Maghsoodloo is enjoying himself? Well, at the recent rapid & blitz I saw an interview with him. A few years ago he was a child prodigy, I seem to remember, so looking at this big, bearded man was a surprise to me. He had a big smile and looked just like someone who knows how to enjoy himself!

Hey Daniel King. Really good analysis! I got to know you when I read Mastering the Spanish and Winning with the Najdorf, both books of yours. Then I found your KZfaq Channel and loved It! But then your recent videos about the Kalashnikov got me thinking: Why did you switched from the Najdorf to this other sicilian? I really loved your explanations and analysis in your old Najdorf book. Even though some of the analysis is outdated, the verbal explanations are really something else!

I will always be a great fan of the Najdorf: I have had some of my best wins with the opening. But for many amateurs there is simply too much theory to take on and that is (partly) because Black's pawn structure is flexible (should the e-pawn move to e5, e6 or not move at all? And how does that change strategy?). Therefore I decided to recommend the Kalashnikov where the pawn structure is more or less fixed and it is therefore much easier for Black to determine strategy. It is also an opening that I used to play as a teenager and there are some very interesting new ideas. I am not saying that the Kalashnikov is better than the Najdorf or vice versa. It's just another option. Openings are very much a matter of taste.

At 9:18 I think you could even be flashy with the temporary queen sac ...Qxd5 which should win a pawn?

Ha! First thing that occurred to me, too, with all the emphasis to that point on the various pins and loose bits and pieces in White's position. 9:20 - ...b5 might be a hair better, but ...Qxd5 looks like it's more fun.

Instead of f3 why can't white play Bxd4 exd4 Nd5 instead of the Na4 which you say is forced?

It's true that 16 Na4 isn't forced, 16 Nd5 is possible, but the essential point here is that giving up the dark-squared bishop is a strategic mistake. Black has excellent play after 16...Nc5.
