Practically, yes. Technically, no. We tricked the occupants into abandoning it then claimed the "vacant" space. Sort of what was done in real life history with various nomadic peoples and what is still done with various peoples around the world now. One recent example was Crimea. Russia made it very clear that anyone who resisted or held a contradictory opinion would be seen as a "combatant". Given that there wasn't yet the infrastructure to meaningfully resist, many (rightfully begrudgingly) took the opportunity to leave. Russia then moved in their own people who "voted" to be annexed, essentially weaponizing "democracy". This is probably why they expected their more recent phase to go so much easier than it actually did, but Ukraine used their opportunity to regroup and prepare as best they could for the onslaught that was eventually coming. There are many other instances to draw upon. Azerbaijan using a history of mistrust to intimidate the Armenians out of a recently annexed territory, all while saying that the locals won't be harmed by the new administration. Particular examples we see in the Near East that I can't mention here where the locals were bulldozed out and settlers brought in. Many situations where either someone got intimidated out so others could move in, or others moved in while they were absent. All that is required is a power imbalance that makes the calculus very clear. In the case of the story, however, it was pure bluff.

So unless you can give someone a healing factor on par with wolverine or deadpool on top of immortality and then use them for parts for the rest of time... While also managing to turn up their pain receptors and also find a way for them to never give up hope/ become desensitized to whats happening to them. I don't think worse exists than what I can think up. Because that is the most tame one I got.

As they said: "big whoop". Mess around and find out... by loosing (at most) a clunker, two somewhat scummy pricks, and a last gen robot. And the whole reason for this kind of setup is to keep plausible deniability for humanity at large. Most of everyone isn't going to know how new worlds are acquired and won't be too chuffed to look much farther than "Wait, *another* planet that was abandoned? Must be a Dark Forest scenario." Worst case scenario is that some aliens come back generations later. All they have are stories about how "humanity is doom", or whatever, but all they're going to find is a group of goofballs who only know that this was another in a long line of abandoned planets. None of the aliens will even be able to claim that humans actually came by and drove them from the planet. Or maybe the aliens discover the ruse and come looking for humanity to answer for the attempted crime. When they do find the humans, they find a massive collection of clueless goofballs who, in all honesty, have *no idea* what these aliens are talking about. They could attack anyway, sure, but they'll look like the villains to the wider community. Who will then come down hard on them. And mostly everyone will just assume it's a Dark Forest scenario, again.

Remember, all but maybe 1000 of the humans (and those might even be dead by then) won't know what the aliens are talking about. So it'll seem like some evil aliens are attacking because of imagined slights. The larger the human loses, the more likely a massive genocide will occur in retribution so banding together pretty much ensures they all die together.

Sort of like how the Japanese only built the Yamato in response to bluff figures published by the US Navy. They built a countermeasure to something that didn't exist (at the time, at least). In the context of the story the prospective Xeno species could unify, rapidly accelerate military research, and become a threat when they otherwise wouldn't have been, all to counter the worst thing they could imagine when the humans in question were just bluffing.

I don't think it is humanity exactly. But a Space Colonizing Corporation that's using a loophole; if the inhabitants of a planet are "voluntary" leaving their planet, it's up for grabs. But I might be wrong because they called the ships seed ships instead of colonizing ships.

Like humans would ever invade and conquer other people. Killing them by the millions. Nah.

Compare with a previous story of an alien businessbeing who had bought the rights to mine mineral and biota on Earth and enslave the population, then before they went to inspect it, humans had developed space flight which removed a world from the market. The alien landed and tried to con humans into abandoning their orbiting space station voluntarily which would validate his claim. It didn’t go as well for them as in this story.
