This vid is probably theost helpful since I have no idea how to characterize the "dark" and "bright" timbre.
@jazzcazzbazznazz4778
@jazzcazzbazznazz4778 2 жыл бұрын
The way I understand dark vs bright is by thinking about how I would sing a certain song. One of my favorite classical pieces is Fugue in G minor, if I were to sing this to someone I would use a “bom” to represent the soft round darker tone of classical saxophone. If I were singing what Jay was playing at the end of the video I would probably use a combination of “da” and “ba” to give the impression of the hard sharp brighter sound.

Well, as he says, his Alto sound is rather bright, naturally. You might achieve a similar sound with different equipment. Make sure to take enough time to listen to yourself with each mp. Play in different rooms, and record yourself. (Ideally with a mic, but even your phone can give you a bit of an "outside perspective.")

Thank you Jay. This video has really helped me figure out which mouthpieces to try out for my playing and budget. The winner for me was the Jet. It was brighter than i'm used to but with the dark ligature it's a great combination. Changed my whole sound and ease of getting low notes and altissimo notes! Great video and you play your tail off!!!

I recently - several months ago now I guess since it was BC19 - got serious about jazz and upgraded to a JJ HR* 6M. I played a Meyer 5M in high school and some in college - but was mostly legit in college. As you said, it took a little bit of time to find the right combination of reed and strength. But having done that, I love the way it sounds. I was looking for a more traditional bebop/lead alto sound, and this mpc got me really close to what I’m looking for. I’ll reiterate that it’s very easy to play, intonation is good and it’s extremely flexible - still finding colors in my sound with it. Highly recommend.

I just went through a trial of my own a few months ago with the Jody Jazz DV, HR* and Jet mouthpieces when I decided to get a more open version of the HR* I already owned. When I called for the mouthpiece trial, I was surprised to have Jody pick up the phone and talk with me about his mouthpieces. I wasn't going to try the DV because of the high price, but he convinced me that I had nothing to lose in giving it a try. I'm really glad I did, because that mouthpiece is fantastic and the one I decided to keep, easy blowing and seems to work with just about every reed I throw onto it. Stimulus money and birthday gift to myself. All the Jody Jazz mouthpieces were great, consistent like Jay says, just need to pick the one that suits your needs..

I play in a latin music, “merengue” band and while I agree with your assessment of the Superjet having the qualities to cut through that type of music, I would personally prefer a Jet because of my gear (Overhauled Buescher TruTone which I am looking to upgrade soon) or a DV NY. Four years ago I started playing tenor again (after many years not playing since high school) and, about 6 months into it, was looking for some mouthpieces. I purchased the Selmer Soloist C* which I play in HS for band concerts, but had to "guess" at what to get for a jazz mouthpiece. I ended up purchasing the Jody Jazz HR* 5 (I play Java Green 2.5 reeds on it) and the Jet 6 (I play Vandoren Jazz 2.5 on it) based on Jody Jazz's recommendations. I love them -- and I guess I got lucky! And they perform pretty much like you advertise!
