Darkest Dungeon 2 implies it's equally dark to the original, hence it's name "Darkest Dungeon too"

You needed to attack the tap root with your Plague Doctor and Grave Robber once the vines start to drop. Each attack on the tap root will result in a vine withdrawing. Use the Highway Man and Man at Arms to attack the General. Luckily the Plague Doctor's Grenade will hit both the tap root and the General to help things along on both fronts. One more thing: it is standard that you need the head of a region lair boss affixed to your wagon, otherwise, you cannot approach the main boss at the end of the Act. However, this does not apply to the first two region denial boss. You can forego obtaining a head in the Tangle and Sprawl and still complete Act 1.

I love that Jon’s perception will NEVER change. The strangling stopped/decreased when he was doing AoE attacks.

Jon's problem with these fights is his inability to read all the symbols, stats, and effects in play. The time his guard didn't give him defense, his man at arms was debuffed with "unable to gain defense". He didn't bother to see what that trap symbol on the boss meant, he isn't paying attention when enemies are guarding each other, and he doesn't pay attention to blight and bleed resist chances near enough. But of course, that is what makes it all so entertaining! It wouldn't be MATN if there wasn't an element of panic.

So... you are roleplaying the unseen controller who stays in the stagecoach at all times. When your team dies horribly, it's just a case of "round up another four suckers", rather than restarting from scratch. Must be an employer's market.

I played this when it first entered early access. It looks like they've added a lot of cool stuff. Also the General is really hard to figure out the first time. As I recall you can't kill the tap root but attacking it causes the roots to pull back some, so you can unstrangle your characters. Also I think there's some background dialogue that implies that you did this to the world in the first game by going into the darkest dungeon.

You have to complete act 4 to figure out exactly what happened but basically(spoilers ahead of course) the player character and academic (the narrator) were colleagues and discovered the iron crown, a cultic symbol that many ancient civilizations used. The player character gets interested in this symbol and starts performing many cultic rituals, sacrificing the academic to release the cultists, turning the world to shit and ascending the player character to an eldritch god.

Well Jon, I'm not sure about the second but equally dark installment of this dungeon, but in the first one we actually have a pretty good understanding of what happened, Dismas ancestor discovered this horrible Cthulhu-esque monstrosity and released it onto the world (or merged with it). Tho you would only know that if you made it through to the end, which I didn't, because bloody hell, was that dungeon dark, tho not darker than this one, presumably, as the name implies.

The dungeon traversal is so much easier to follow! I always found the progression in DD1 to be so frustrating.

I'm only 16 minutes in and I'm dazed or lost or something. I was sure you were going to compare the gameplay or something I came to think as Many A True Nerd review. It is a enjoyable shock. Bravo.

Jon: Any attacks on the pillager is gonna be redirected to the dog, so now they both functionally have dodge, that's too bad. Jon, seconds later: My attack that bypasses dodge can only hit the pillager, not the dog. That's too bad, I guess I better use something else.

Maybe by darkest dungeon 3 he'll stop misgendering the poor plague doctor. There's hoping.

A little tip I learned way too late... If you are fighting ordained enemies (the enemies with the grey crown icon) you can hold alt to open the examination screen, and THEN mouse over the ordainment icon and it will tell you what the ordainment actually does for that enemy

You gotta manage your stress levels, Jon. Meltdowns are bad. Prevent meltdowns. More DD2 please!

As someone who played a lot of the original I really appreciated that the "True darkness is the friends who died along the way." line. Far too accurate statement for the first game.

Having played the first game for over 100 missions, the amount of animations in this game is somewhat uncanny. Still a good game but my brain feels wierd.

I think you conquered the original darkest dungeon so it doesn't exist anymore. That means this is the new darkest dungeon. They can both be the darkest of their time, but they just don't exist at the same time.

This dungeon is not as dark as the darkest dungeon, it's the second darkest dungeon.

Bit of a preview on Xcom with commentary on turn based combat.

I feel like Jon, gets stuck on attacking the enemy in the first position or like focusing down on one enemy too much. Like if the bosses play in the same way as in the first game, there is always a strategy involved. Clearly, I think for the Dreaming General, you are supposed to keep hitting at the tap root so that it stops growing. I also noticed that like with the drummer skeleton he wasn't really targeting it with his ranged characters when he could have. Its all super entertaining, but he definitely could have managed these fights a lot better.

Jon's perception is not good, he still has -2 perception, one game I would really love to see a playthrough on for Jon is something like Pathfinder Kingmaker or Wrath of the Righteous. Although come on Jon when you hit the taproot the growth receded, what you needed to do was target the taproot with the Plague Doctor and Graverobber with the Man at Arms and the Rogue guy basically doing the damage on the general, cause I feel like the first game has a lot of similarities to this one and every boss can have unique mechanics. I feel like though the -2 perception would really hit Jon in an Isometric RPG game because so many of those games just provide way too many options that even a guy like me who enjoys that many options can struggle to know the best strategies for winning fights.

It's a bit of a shame, I liked the first game very much, but this one just doesn't click with me.

Maybe it’s the same dungeon with new and different laws of physics demanding that it hold itself to the modern standard of graphics? That way, it’s the same original (accept no substitutes) ‘Darkest Dungeon’. It’s just now had another game made about it. Like going to Skyrim in ESO improves the look of the world; and changes the physiology of the Khajiit.

Great game. Only thing is as cool as their 2D style is it does have some draw-backs compared to 3D.

Day 1034 of requesting Zoo Tycoon. I like to imagine that this game, Dredge, and Dead Space all trace the history of one incredibly unlucky family line that just can't seem to catch a break. Which of the road trip buddies is the ancestor of the robot toaster is up to you as an audience

The game has lost a lot of the appeal from game1 You don't stick around to actually care for the characters as they will get disposed after 2-3 hours regardless whether you fail or succeed. The progression for a roguelike is horrible. 2-3 hours for +0,05 % deathblow resist gain on one character - woohooo ... oh wait It is no surprise the reviews for the game are sinking (and fast) on steam

Honestly, the name implies that plague doctor identifies as a male now, so get over it, everyone! Jon clearly was able to spot this minor detail with his incredible perception.

OMG, this is as bad as a D&D gets. I want to thank Jon for saving me so much money by not buying any of these crap fests he tries out here. Your the best, Buddy.
