I don't think it would necessarily need to be a remake. Let's hear a story about Esmeralda how she ended up in France, where is her family? I actually hate all the remakes Disney has made because they are nor creating anything new. We already know how Lion king ends, we know what happens to Ariel. I want new stories but about these beloved characters in the world we fell in love with as kids.

@@brokenguardianangel8575 If they did something like that where it was making an original story that tied in with the Disney movie that focused on Esmeralda and dealt with Romani culture and her story in a respectful way (aka the opposite of the original source by Victor Hugo), I'd be more inclined to not immediately dismiss the movie. But I still don't think Disney has the ability or maturity or motivation to respectfully handle a story that deals with race, racism, disability, religious abuse, and so many other extremely controversial topics that are ingrained in the story or any off shoot of the original story. They kinda tried with Hunchback of Notre Dame two, and that is the worst Disney sequel.

@@vpenguin333 Well. It would still be a movie for kids so you might not have every aspect of discrimination you mentioned but I think it is important for kids to see representation. They can later on find more about the geoup of people but for 5-10 yos it should be fine to just tell them a group of people exists. I don't think it is Disney's job to teach kids but it is helpful to have conversations about groups of people when those kids at least know they exist. Schools and parents should step up when talking about teaching about important issues like these. Hell. I didnt even realize Esmeralda is romani when i was a kid. But I will definitely teach my kid about romani people since there are quite a lot here and some wear their traditional clothing. I dont want my kid to have stereotypes in their head pushed by ignorant people. But I dont think it is a movies job to teach that.

I haven't seen the Disney cartoon though I saw the even older than me version of Hunchback of Notre Dame with Maureen O'Hara as Esmerelda which changed the story's ending too. The book's ending is quite depressing though I can see that wouldn't be child friendly. Of course you'll know this if you've read the book - I appreciate it can be a pain when folk tell you what you already know.

Racism and stereotyping plays a huge role in the story, but let's leave it to the villains please. I'm all in for respectfully and accurately portrayed Romani people.

If one was going for an accurate representation of Victor Hugo's book, the racist stuff would unfortunately remain as how the Romani people were treated is a major factor in the story, but Romani actors and actresses should be used to play Romani characters.

Disney is horrible for many reasons. So many of the original stories are not appropriate for children and are so dark and creepy. The messages they send to girls is also so terrible.

I'm confused... the Esmeralda character in the original book was a white girl who was adopted by the Romani. Disney opted to make her ethnically Romani for their adaptation. (Probably the Frollo character would be less likely to consider her an exception on his persecution tear, as he is driven by physical appearances.) However, if the film is adapted to be more "authentically" Hunchback of Notre Dame, casting a white actress would accomplish that and it wouldn't be whitewashing- it would be using Victor Hugo's work.

@@emro164 Florian has explained in another vid about this, that Esmeralda's origins in Hugo's work is based on harmful Romani stereotypes (specifically, that they are villains who steal white children). Her being described as beautiful is only because she was a white girl, thereby implying that the only way a Romani girl could be pretty is if she was white. Disney is by no means perfect and who knows if they knew of Hugo's biases, but if the cartoon is able to ignore the harmful stereotypes in Hugo's work, why can't the live-adaption?

Agreed! As Jews we do have more in common with the Romani than most, but I absolutely agree that Esmeralda should be played by a Romani woman.

Gratiela is great but i’d prefer a dark skinned Romani woman for the role. As for men, i’m a Romani actor, some other Romani actors are Gilbert Costache, Jesus Castro and Charlie Chapham

The 1996 movie is great but it misses some points about accurate representation. I personally dislike the ending: Esmeralda should have been with Quasimodo, and it doesn't make sense that people suddenly accepts him like if they didn't humiliate him days before. Changing this and cutting that idiot "A Guy Like You" song, it would have been better.

Deepika Padukone would be perfect. She is very beautiful and not too fair. She actually has some color. I think some Indians consider her kind of dark.
