▸ Roman merchants who followed the "amber route" probably visited these areas in antiquity to replace bronze, silver, gold or glass products with amber, honey, leather, wax and slaves. In the 8th and 9th centuries, a settlement was established at the mouth of the Wieprza River to the Baltic Sea.
In the 11th century Darlowo was already an important trade center. In 1205 its name was written as Dirlov. The favorable location of the stronghold at the mouth of two rivers: Wieprza and Grabowa, fertile soils and the proximity of trade routes, significantly contributed to the increase in population. In 1312 Darłowo received the city rights of Lubeck, granted by the Święc brothers.
Through Kołobrzeg, Darłowo joined the Hanseatic League in 1361, which contributed to a further increase in the importance of the commercial port. At the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, it had a larger merchant fleet than the nearby Słupsk. It maintained lively trade contacts with Lübeck, and the ships of local merchants reached Normandy and even Spain. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the city was surrounded by defensive walls.
In the 60s of the 15th century, after the childless death of Eric I of Pomerania, Duchess Zofia, wife of Eric II (who was separated from him) and mother of Bogusław X, became the mistress of Darłowo. (she was referred to as the "Cruel Zofia", it was mentioned about the "White Lady" repenting at the castle in Darłowo for numerous sins and iniquities), in fact she cared for the interests of Western Pomerania, directing them to cooperation with Poland. From 1478, during the reign of the son of Zofia Bogusław X, Darłowo experienced its golden age.
In 1497, a huge wave, created as a result of tectonic movements on the seabed, hit the area, completely destroying the port, breaking inland and taking with it four large ships moored in Darłówek.
Later, the city was plagued by fires. In the largest one, in 1624, 566 buildings, the town hall, the parish church, the school and the pastor's house burned down within six hours. Many people died and the catastrophe ushered in an economic decline. Then the city was plagued by more fires, plague epidemics, and later activities related to the Thirty Years' War. In 1715 the first lighthouse was built.
The port in Darłowo was revived only in the 19th century. At that time, the port was rebuilt and the fleet was significantly enlarged. At the end of the 19th century, Darłowo became a fashionable holiday destination due to its unique microclimate qualities.
In the interwar period, Darłowo belonged to Germany. A military unit was quartered in it, there was also a specialized shipyard dealing with the construction of reinforced concrete ships. Such ships, known as "Darłowo" ships, were built due to the war limitations in the use of steel.
In 1938, the construction of a training ground in Darłówek was completed. The Krupp concern conducted tests of the railway departments on it. The two largest guns in the history of the world, called "Dora" and "Gustav", were also assembled and tested here. Adolf Hitler came several times to visit their construction sites.
