Darrell Brooks, after being removed to a neighboring courtroom, continued his efforts to disrupt proceedings in his criminal trial for allegedly driving into the Waukesha Christmas parade in December 2021. Brooks said he didn't understand the jury instructions and was angry that the instructions he wanted to give to the jury aren't being used.

@@moniquewallace7744 that is a slippery slope there, it’s not that cut and dried. Yes, he does appear to be in some type manic state, but mentally ill does not always equal incompetent. He was examined I believe theee times, idk if it was in connection to representing himself, but he was found competent to stand trial. Unless his episode clearly evolves to a delusional/psychotic/whatever state, to say he can’t exercise his right to represent himself would be directly violating his rights. His ability to do a good job representing himself is not relevant.

People think the judge is being nice or being particularly patient, but it's important to understand that when she says, "I need to preserve how he looks to the jury," that isn't out of the goodness of her heart. It's done because if she doesn't, that's grounds for appeal. Everyone involved knows it and he is working every angle.

The judge was walking a tightrope. Holding him in contempt would’ve done nothing substantial. He’s facing life. If she had pulled him back too much by fully exercising her judicial powers he would’ve claimed his rights were violated or that he was treated unfairly. She absolutely allowed him to prolong the trial through his erratic behavior, but the judge was allowing him to dig his own grave in this case because he had no grounds to claim he didn’t have enough time or a fair chance to defend himself. She gave him EVERY opportunity even to the point of his own misconduct. I think she played it extremely well and I think she and the prosecution showed extreme patience and diligence in their duties.
