I was eager to see Mainoo + Cole Palmer play together. Alongside Bellingham and Foden, it feels like that would have been a killer combination. Southgate needed to really play everyone in those two games.

I believe Mainoo should definitely be on the plane. However I differ on whether he starts. For the quality that Southgate has to choose from, we should be playing 4-3-3. The midfield 3 in my opinion would be Foden; Rice; Bellingham. Whereas the attacking 3 would be Grealish; Kane; Saka. Southgate needs to play on the front foot, and not be preoccupied with the opposition. The purpose of having a squad of 26 is that it will afford you options. It shouldn't imply that you pick players solely to play one formation, his preferred 4-2-3-1, and their ability to slot in. Southgate should be looking at the tactical formations, and who could be the best option for a multiple of choices. We're screwed at the back, in that he will partner Stones with Maguire. This in my opinion is why he will opt for 2 defensive first players in midfield. To provide cover for the defensive pair who lack pace.

if we are to measure the gap of quality between the 1st choice and the 2nd choice in that same position. And for that I say Luke Shaw is the most important player atm, because the 2nd choice is abysmal in comparison. There is also bit of a gap between Bellingham vs Maddison or Mainoo vs Gallagher

I think I know what he was trying to say although I'd expect someone who talks for a living to slightly more coherent. I think he meant he is different to Philips and Henderson. But Kane and Bellingham are more important. Watkins isn't a good enough finisher to replace Kane and in big games with few chances we need a striker who can take that one big chance. I'd also say Rice, Walker and Stones are more important. Plus as it stands we appear to have one left back so you could even say Chilwell is more important. Mainoo is class and there is no doubt in my mind he'll play nearly 100 games for England and I would take him to the Euros but to say he's the most important player is ridiculous

Dunks mistake was bad...but a bit unlucky. Sliding on wet ground when trying to connect with the ball...actually got back up to get in a position to defend the cross...which was a great cross....and theres 1 Belgium player v 3 English in the box...nothing said about them! Maguire made a worse mistake against brazil but got away with it, so that mistake isnt mentioned...and that happens a lot!
