Today I am showing you how to take English Yew cuttings. You can use these to make hedges, topiary or let them grow into trees - all can potentially live for over 2000 years! Yes... they’re VERY long living plants.

We have a huge tree on our front garden and we were considering cutting it down and replacing it with yew hedges. It turns out the tree itself is a yew and grows beautiful red berries on it in the autumn. The birds love it, so I think we'll cut it back and use the cuttings to try and establish a hedgerow.

How wonderful! Please do take cuttings…. But make sure the pots you put the cuttings in are bigger than the ones I used. They dry out too quickly. My mistake. Good luck my friend xxx

Hello from Adelaide South Australia. Very clear, thank you. I purchased about 10 (in pots), and they have grown beautifully here, even with our hot (up to 42 deg C) summers. they would be about 10 ft tall now. I intend to try my hand at cuttings so this with a view to a hedge of about 40 m. long. In pots, they are fiercely expensive. If successful, I probably will not live to see it get above about 8 feet!

Yew is a very slow grower tho. Any suggestions to use a larger cutting like a meter long in order to give it a good head start?

Do you not need rooting gormone powder?

Thinking of taking a 12 inch cutting and have a support next to it and planting it directly in the soil in the State of Nebraska USA. How long will it take before the root system will develop? What soil temp would you suggest to planting? Thanks

How wonderful. I love Yew. No hormone rooting powder? That is amazing. Darren will you leave the cuttings indoors until you replant them? Yew trees are my favourite English trees and their berries are so beautiful. Do you think that the berries contain seeds? About the missing seceteurs, Ava was using them 😂🤣🥰

Cuttings will remain outdoors. The berries do have very poisonous seeds. Toxic. I will pick them off. Can’t have them near my dear daughter, Ava. 😘

So you recommend stripping the bark from the lower part of the cutting, would be for any cutting you do or just yew?

Hey! Yes I do that with most variety of cuttings. Helps to aid rooting. I’ll post updates on these. :)

Its a pity the berries are highly poisonous to dogs (and humans) and so you cant let it berry as the berries are lovely looking.

Birds love to eat the berries. It’s the seed within the berry that’s toxic. Birds shit them out and have no troubles. Xx
