it's 12 am here and I've got an exam in a few hours. After struggling for hours to find an intuitive explanation for convolution, I came across your video, and believe me, I can't thank you enough.

One of the best explanations for convolution! after a whole course of Fourier Analysis in Uni I have a lot of basic holes in my understanding, and you have helped me a ton!

Wow! What an amazing and detailed explanation that was! I'm taking a Signals and Systems course at Berkeley and had a very hard time with this flip and shift method (both fDT and CT). Your super-detailed explanation was the only one that was able to make me understand this with CRYSTAL clarity. Thank you very much!

This is no doubt a very good explanation of the convolution using the graphical method. Two thumbs up! However, it would be slightly more helpful if you had chosen different pulse values, say 2 for x(t) and 3 for h(t).

Does it matter then where our two rectangular functions lie (i.e. their shift)? It looks to me that if the initial function h(t) was shifted to either the left or right by 5 places, because I'm integrating from -inf to +inf that you'd end up with the same graph regardless. Is this correct? Thanks.

He already did! The plateau depends on the widths of the functions in question, if they have the same width, we get a triangular waveform.

Thank you so much, dude! Now it's clear to me that convolutions are an algorithm. It makes no sense to think what the integral evaluates to before doing the 'mirror and run through the interval' bit :)

Same, I had no idea what the point of convolution was and now Im starting to see that it is an "operation" of sorts that is specific to signals.

Thank you this example was great! But what happens if convolution includes a rectangular pulse and a function with sin,cos or tan? x(t)=cos(2t) and h(t)=2u(t-2)+2u(t-5) as an example

The convolution of x and y is DEFINED as integral of x(t)*y(s-t)dt, and the definition follows from how it was derived in the first place (as the impulse response, which has to do with delta functions and how those work).

his method is correct but for doing further problems please take time t(small t) as the time of the origin for eg if we have a window from 1/2 to -1/2 well take t+1/2 and t-1/2. half knowledge is always bad.

@akshayraut3719 7 жыл бұрын
See bro, when we flip the function, like in this case we have first made h(-tau) and then if we add something, it goes to right and if we subtract something, then it goes towards left, obviously unlike what we do conventionally in shifting.
@mariochang6335
@mariochang6335 6 жыл бұрын
h[t-tau] = h[-(tau-t)]. => rotate, then shift to right if t is positive, as usual
