Review of the Dart Piranha Flyscreen on a 2018 Moto Guzzi V7III Stone. After some modifications this screen became a great solution to manage wind blast & turbulence over the several thousand miles.

Hey Tex Mex...just wanted to follow up on your excellent tutorial. So, mounted the Dart Piranha on my Triumph SS. Same thing as you said-in stock mounting position nothing but turbulent air. Then, to test, removed bottom screws and kept top screws to tip the shield back, and try that. Zoom, way cleaner air. IT also left the reason i mount fly screens; so that I can lay on tank and go high speeds, in tuck, just fine. Ended up grinding the mounts down to about 1/8 of an inch and it works great, as permanent solution. Next thing will try the edge treatment you mentioned !

Interesting video thanks! I have a 2015 V7ii Special. It came with the Marlin and as you said, puts wind blast/noise directly on my helmet(I'm 5'9"). Unbearable over 60mph. I noticed if I lifted myself up (started to stand up on the pegs), the wind noise was clean and much quieter. So this morning I removed the Marlin and it was an amazing improvement, with 70/75pmh manageable. As you say, you do have to 'hang on' a bit to the bars at that speed but I'm happy with the trade-off. Thinking about the Piranha (for aesthetics and instrument protection) but I do think it'll put some of the helmet buffetings back so I think I'll keep her naked. I have tinnitus so like you, I'm very particular about minimizing wind noise. All the best.

Wow. Dude, excellent fiddling ! Just bought this screen so this video is tremendously helpful. I’ve always made my own custom screens, but the Triumph SS I’m on, when I lay on the tank at speed, puts me too close to the bars, where I usually mount a screen. Thanks!

Like the marlin better, the moto guzzi oem windshield is a nightmare for buffeting, so much more noise ,glasses vibrating off nose, the bracket is the stop for the windshield, good idea though, changing the angle works, we need a wind tunnel with tracer air or buy a bmw r1200rt, with a electronic adjustable windshield, that's what I have, a v7 for backroads and r1200rt for traveling

The Marling was a little too tall for me, though it does look nice. And yes, on a 500+ mile day the V7 does get a little tiring. Great adventure though!

Nice review. So I guess that is the "Black Metallic" Piranha. I'm trying to decide between that or the regular Midnight Black

Adam H Thank you for your kind words and your question! Here is the link to the Dart website, it has some of their hi-res pictures of both as well as owner pictures: www.dartflyscreens.com/products/piranha-flyscreen?variant=12103803633758 Overall I’d say the standards screen is glossy and minimally transparent. The metallic screen is a flat color, non-transparent, and a darker gun metal grey is the best way I can describe it. It definitely doesn’t sparkle the way car metallic paint does. It blends in very well with my Guzzi where most parts are in a faded flat black, and the screen is just a tad lighter. I hope this helps! Let me know if I can help further, please. I appreciate you!

Great review. Thanks for that. It was a bit hard to hear during the video, but what exactly did you use to make the bottom of the flysreen thicker? I heard SUV type of something, but did not actually catch what it is even after a few viewing. If you can let me know, that would be great. I had the same issue with a fly screen where the buffeting on the helmet made it unbearable.

Jimmy Lau Thank you for your feedback, and sorry I wasn’t clear in my speech. I used automotive door edge guard, so that U-shaped plastic protection people put on the edge of their car doors to protect the paint in case they hit something when they open the door. I used the one sold as the “SUV-type” because it is thicker and rounder, thereby providing more surface area for the air to stream around and a smoother surface to shape the airflow. I think technically one could also glue some vortex generators to the screen for a similar effect, but I think the door edge guard does a great job and is visually more appealing. I hope this helps!

I recently bought and fitted a Dart Marlin small screen (fly screen) to my Moto Guzzi Roamer . The wind over the top of the screen hit me in the head and caused a lot of wind noise . The screen has no adjustment so nothing can be done to stop where the wind hits the helmet .

Thank you for your feedback! Yeah, I shied away from the marlin for that reason, I thought it would push the wind into my helmet. Have you considered these two things: #1: lowering the headlight by sliding its bracket down the fork tubes #2: filing down the screen mounting bracket like I did on my V7III ? Those may help lead you to a solution. They definitely did for me.

Thanks for this video! I just got a 2018 Moto Guzzi V7 iii Stone and purchased the Dart Piranha with the intention of making the same modification/fiddling. I’m 5’8” and ride with the stock handlebars. Any help/instruction you can provide for where to file the flyscreen bracket and the product you used to thicken the base of the screen would be much appreciated. Thanks and enjoy your Guzzi!

Just now seeing the comments below with similar question about door edge guard, very helpful thanks
@TexMexStrada
@TexMexStrada 4 жыл бұрын
On the filing, it would be on the part where the screen frame touches down on the headlight bracket, you file that down to help increase the lean-back angle. As to the door edge guard, I saw that you found the reference. Before you start filing, take a look at this post: facebook.com/texmexstrada/posts/2579414198974378 This may be an option for you as well, and if you lower the whole headlight assembly, you don't need to lean it back that far, so less filing. If you like the dropped headlight look, that may be an option for you as well. I hope this helps!

What do you mean? Since I ride 500+ miles per day on my trips, good airflow management is important

If you get so "beat up with massive wind blast" perhaps you should get a Goldwing or a car. I have done tens of thousands of miles on my V7 III Anniversario without any fly screen and have no problem with the wind at speed. It's not the bike, it's you.

Thank you for your judgement, much appreciated! Here is what a riding day looks like for me: 500 miles across Texas at 85mph (GPS verified, cuz Texas) with 35mph winds (cuz Texas) that are carrying lots of sand & dirt (cuz Texas) as well as getting pelleted by sand & rocks kicked up by pickup trucks, freight trucks, oil trucks, and construction trucks (all cuz Texas) in 90F+ heat (cuz Texas). So, when the wind is just right I'm riding into a hot 120mph (85+35) sandblaster for hours on end, in back to back to back two-hour intervals, plus a little longer. And since I, at best, have a three day weekend for trips (cuz in Texas we work) and we have lots of ground to cover (cuz everything is bigger in Texas), I'm doing that for three days straight. How do your riding days look like? Oh, and is that a Dart Marlin in your profile picture on GuzziTech? And a thread comment about it (about cutting it down a little, but saying that you had never ridden the bike without it) from just a few weeks ago (September 10th, 2020)?
