Darth Vader's voice and why imperial stormtroopers can't shoot straight

Does my theory extend to the third film? Who cares about a load of teddy bears with zips up their backs and no ability to blink?
My attempt at demonstrating Darth's delivery is ruined by my inability to think of suitable statements to illustrate it, and my hesitation causes pauses that destroy the point I am making. Sorry about that.

Umberto Vinciguerra Well in I'm pretty sure the 501st while it lost quite a lot of its clones forces in the Death Star It still was mainly made from clones, If you want proof check out the Star Wars Battlefront II campaign, tells the story of the 501st from the clone wars all the way to Hoth.

Actually from what I recall that used to be the official explanation, something about the 501st being issued mass-produced weapons with sub-par crystals that greatly impacted their accuracy. I'm not sure if there was a reason they didn't replace these weapons over the duration of the war but it's probably also buried somewhere in the EU.

"Professional" Hypnotists (or however you wish to call someone who practices unconfirmed pseudo sciences) generally try to induce hypnosis through deep breathing coaching and the rythmatic sound of their voice and is sometimes done over the phone. So who do we know that has a very rythmatic flow of speech as well as a very steady breathing pattern and holds a position where he could easily broadcast these sounds throughout the communications systems of the troopers suits?

Instead of saying that vader was controlling his troops mentally, why wouldn't he just give a normal order to not kill the rebels and just try to capture them? Makes more sense to me.
@kwanarchive
@kwanarchive 9 жыл бұрын
Because he wants to be absolutely sure his plans work. Orders are not always followed just because you give them. A soldier will still feel fear when being attacked and the training would take over and they would shoot to kill.
@Geckuno
@Geckuno 9 жыл бұрын
kwanarchive Then with that logic he should micro manage every combat that every storm trooper has taken and what good is a soldier if he can't follow such simple orders.
@kwanarchive
@kwanarchive 9 жыл бұрын
Geckuno Or how about he only does that for important missions with precise goals? Did you consider the force skill is not something you can just switch on at will with no energy cost to the force user? Did you completely ignore my argument about how a soldier under fire, regardless of how well trained they are, have a huge self preservation instinct? Do you really think any soldier would stick to the order of "don't shoot to kill" when someone with a lightsaber is charging at them? Did you consider that, if the soldiers were to stay at a safe distance always that they wouldn't figure out there was a plan in letting them escape? Did you consider that the broader force power of battle meditation is a specialized skill that Vader was probably not trained in (but the emperor was, if I remember correctly)? That's the thing with logic: it doesn't make sense when you have a poor understanding of facts (as much as their can be in a fictional universe anyway).
@Piegoose
@Piegoose 9 жыл бұрын
kwanarchive It's not really that it's impossible for that mind-telling concept to work, it's just that why assume that before assuming that the troopers likely have microphones in their helmets and Vader can just say, "don't kill them". I wasn't considering he was _controlling_ their minds, but just telling them before. If Vader has the power to control the minds of packs of stormtroopers and know the location of all of them to know which to control at what moment, than he has ascended to an all-knowing God.
@kwanarchive
@kwanarchive 9 жыл бұрын
***** You need to be more familiar with the Star Wars universe and the extent of force powers. I mentioned battle meditation in my reply to the other person. Vader probably doesn't have that force skill. But we know he's still very powerful in the force despite his injuries.

@blogobre

Ha, Stormtroopers weren't just clones according to the books. The 501st name came about in homage to the people who dress in screen-like bad guy star wars costumes who originally named themselves the 501st because the name sounded cool. The name was used [in homage] for the clones Darth Vader directed personally when he raided the Jedi academy, so it would be a fair assumption that you could then call them that [though it's adding a backstory that didn't exist before] the 501st when they busted onto the ship. The snowtroopers on Hoth, who weren't under his direct command also fared very well, slaughtering the rebels with ease. They just miss the heroes and I suppose it wouldn't be much of a story without the heroes. Also, there's some clever theories that they were under orders 'not' to kill the heroes as Vader and the Emperor were keeping them alive to draw them closer.

Or--instead of the force--he just ordered them to let them go. Seriously--on Tantive IV, the first battle in the series(what prequels?), they butchered the Rebel defenders with minimal casualties. On the Death Star, they /wanted/ them to escape. On Hoth, again they butchered the Rebel defenders. On Cloud City--as stated--they /wanted/ them to escape. On Endor they were surprised and overwhelmed by a guerilla force with superior numbers and tactics. If you don't believe that an unprepared(and arrogant) but better trained and equipped force can fall prey to such a thing I have two real-world battle names for you; Little Big Horn Isandlwana Custer was an arrogant but competent(see his Civil War career) officer, who led a numerically inferior force but one with superior arms and experience against a numerically superior force who had a much better plan. As we all know, he lost. A lesser known but perhaps more severe example was the Battle of Isandlwana, wherein a numerically inferior force attacked a numerically superior one after deliberately and arrogantly backing themselves into a corner with no sound defences. 2,000 British soldiers with state-of-the-art weapons and training were butchered by 10,000 Zulu tribesman wielding gear that would be primitive in the Dark Ages. Everyone always tries to gut this theory with the Endor shpiel, but you try getting suddenly and unexpectedly attacked by a vicious, albeit cuddly foe(I'd suggest that makes it even more bewildering) that comes from all directions and knows the terrain far better than you do and see if you're able to do particularly well, even with all your modern gear. Add to the mix something that both the above forces lacked--that the Ewoks had a platoon of battle-hardened Rebel Commandoes in the mix, and you suddenly realise why even the powerful Stormtroopers failed so utterly.

@christophhofland8890 9 жыл бұрын
Well they also happened to rip up the rebels on hoth. They were a little slow to stop the evac but the troops on the ground were ripped to shreds. With the loss of...I want to say 2 troop carriers? Not a huge loss for a assault on a fortified position. Granted, AT-ATs helped with that, and no one really knows how many rebel troops were still in the base. Either in the rearguard or too slow to evacuate. then if you consider what a sandcrawler is...its almost a roaming fort. First off, its huge, a big metal treaded monstrosity of a thing. It also had to be mechanically robust, with plenty of fail safes just for the weather of a giant sand planet alone and what hells that can raise on machines. Add in that they are roving traders, which means they have valuables, which makes them prime targets for bandits. Jawas wouldn't bother building a giant roving fort to house all their stuff if it could be easily taken by the passing raiders. The fact that storm troopers could hit the thing well enough to bring it down with their usual kit, (a assumption I make only because I cant imagine storm troopers run into a sand crawler everyday and know what it is to bring specialized weapons to knock one out,) is rather impressive from where I sit.

Others have put forward much the same theory, and I think there is some credibility to it. At the opening scenes of A New Hope, the stormtroopers make short work of the security force onboard Tantive IV. And Leia is hit twice by stormtroopers. First with a stun blast on Tantive IV, then by a real blast outside the backdoor to the shield generator on Endor's moon. The stormtroopers in Cloud City were probably under restrictions, too. But no such restrictions were on the snowtroopers that stormed the rebel base on Hoth.

That's illogical. If Vader knew that Leia was his daughter, he would have told her that on the Death Star to convince her to join him and "the dark side". In that case she just would have told him everything voluntarily. He also would have tried to capture Luke. So he at that time neither knew that Leia was his daughter, nor that Luke was his son. But most importantly: Star Wars is just full of plot holes. It doesn't make it less entertaining, though.

In the the old Canon (now Legends) the 501st remained "pure" i.e. clones of Jango Fett and new men of the 105st were cloned and trained in the same way, unlike the rest of the imperial army

Imperial Stormtroopers can't shoot straight in Star Wars and Empire because Vader ordered them to herd the heroes where he wanted them. He let them escape at the end of Star Wars to track them and follow them to the Rebel base. The Imperials killed off the rebels in the beginning rather well, and slaughtered the rebels on Hoth. However, on Bespin, Vader uses them again to herd Luke to the carbon freezing chamber. Vader's goals are worth far more than the lives of his men, and Grand Moff Tarkin actually comments on just that in Star Wars. But Return of the Jedi (in my opinion) was the turning point of Star Wars when it became more like the prequels; meant to sell toys and maximize profits with name recognition and the like. Which meant Lucas just kept doing what he was doing, and gave the Stormtroopers bad aim because of plot rather than purpose. It's the same reason Han didn't die in RotJ: Lucas thought it would hurt sales. The story was meh, the script was blegh, and the ewoks were pretty stupid and clearly meant to sell toys. The name ewoks isn't even said in the whole film. We just know it because of all the branding.
@Arcexey
@Arcexey 8 жыл бұрын
+Captain Jin Spot on with the specifics of IV and V imo makes perfect sense.. nice comment. Anyway. RotJ without most of the new shit put in is awesome bro. 10/10 rounds out the 3 perfectly. Han not dying is a positive thing and just say the stormtroopers were there to shoot one type of opponent :rebels, and had to fight a different one: guerilla ambush by natives Look at the ewoks as symbolic of the inhabitants of the galaxy standing up to the Empire. The ewoks are not stupid. They were going to eat Han, Luke and Chewie and put the rape to Leia after they skinned her, and most likely have eaten other species and cooked them living as they screamed to death begging for their lives. Savage. Not even Fett lacks empathy enough to eat an intelligent humanoid~. They live in the forest and had all these traps set and fought dirty and beat the stormtroopers. Ewoks take hits as well and there is sincere emotion when that one ewok dies. There are a lot of deadly animals IRL that look adorable. Lastly the main reason the stormtroopers lost was because of the ewoks stealing the AT-ST. Doubt they expected that from what the stormtroops were trained to shoot: rebels. I'm not sure what a 'legion of the best troops' is meant to shoot at it, tho. I didn't know that about the name 'ewok' and I agree most of toy selling and marketing bs impacts movies negatively. So many positive things about this movie. 10/10 all 3. But prequels and the new one are just out there existing and being bad.

On Bespin that makes sense, he only brought a select cadre of troops. On the Death Star though, that doesn't make as much sense, there's tens of thousands (at least) or stormtroopers, most of them not in the affected areas, so actually trying to figure out which ones to give orders to would be difficult, especially if he didn't know where they were going to be.

Matthew Marden The core military force guarding the death star was the 501st legion. The 501st legion's nickname is Vader's Fist because they are the unit under his direct command. Aside from them, nearly everyone else onboard were technical staff or government employees.
@GoranXII
@GoranXII 6 жыл бұрын
1. That was in legends, which is no longer canon. 2. The 501st was *among* the units assigned to the Death Star, but it was far from the only one. Hells, we don't even know what size a 'legion' is here. Certainly over the course of the Roman Empire the size varied, with a high of ~5.5K to a low of ~1K men. With about 25K stormtroopers on the Death Star, that means that at least 80% were not 501st Legion.

Darth Vader told the storm troopers to take them alive. Would you dare oppose a direct order from Darth Vader and risk killing them? Erm... no, the stormtroopers were ordered to miss. The whole plan was agreed with Grand Moff Tarkin who asks Vader if the tracking device was secure, and warns that he was taking a great risk with the plan. The same applies to the battle on Cloud city: The plan was to separate Luke from the others and herd them to different locations. The battle of Endor is different as the stormtroopers had difficulty seeing the smaller ewoks, who were used to hiding in the forest. But when they could see, they were accurate. No Jedi mind tricks needed.

I always thought The Force was protecting the heroes. Meaning, in the Star Wars world, Plot Armor is an actual natural phenomenon brought on by The Force, which shapes physical reality. So all of the really lucky things that happen are not flukes - they are active participation of The Force as a character in the story, protecting our heroes.

+Julian Bushelli This could explain why in the new movie, Kylo Ren has the force! it could be that his and Leia's (because she is vader's daughter) Force "Genes" (IDK if it has to do with genes or what) combined produced someone with a very strong connection with the force!
@CrotaroLP
@CrotaroLP 8 жыл бұрын
This is also quite a good explanation for Han's insane luck. He is unconciously using the Force (or being guided by it). After Return of the Jedi Luke (at least in the old canon) established a new Jedi Academy and sought out not only those who were being reported force sensitive but also people who, for example, get thrown out of casinos because they can't just effin lose a gamble. And being force sensitive or not has, as far as I got it, nothing to do with genes, which is why the Emperor's plan to wipe out all Force sensitive people/might-become-Jedi is futile because it's not inheritable. It's like someone from a genetically healthy family tree suddenly developing cancer without it being anyhow related to his/her genes. It's kind of a random mutation - to be not only somewhat influenced by the Force (like pretty much everybody) but having the potential of being able to control it. ...makes sense...what I'm trying to say...?

+CrotaroLP Yes, it does. However, where the skywalkers come in, you are incorrect. It was established canon(and seems to be again) that Luke's children and Leia's children were all force users. Take the new movie: Kylo Ren is a new Anakin Solo. Everything except the name. Only difference is, Ben Skywalker was a good guy, and Anakin Solo was actually killed by his cousin(Who seems to have been replaced by Rey).

I'd think it would be harder, to control with the force, many troops that Vader was not immediately in the presence of. Maybe in cloud city (given there were fewer with him) he did this. In the novels they explain that the lack of shooting skills is a result of the cloning process being flawed since the Kaminoans never gave up their secrets to perfecting it. Ah, but it would be more convincing if the troopers weren't actually aware that they weren't supposed to hit anything. Also, they wouldn't be as likely to give their lives to assist in the deception if they weren't allowed to take down the targets that _were_ fighting back. At the same time as they were not to kill them they'd also need to keep the pressure up to prevent them from thinking "Oh, this is really easy; why don't we swing on down to the reactor room and get some unrestrained fusion up in this bitch before we leave?"

during the "Clone Revolt" on Kamino the Kaminoans stopped supplying clone troopers and refuse to cooperate with the empire. So the Storm Troopers you see in the older movies ain't clone troopers, just enlisted troops, ordinary people. Now some of them would be clone troopers still but they are in the minority, most likely special forces. If you played Battlefront they even talk about alot of clone troopers being stationed at the first death star when it exploded so they were even fewer after that

Is there an explanation for why "laser beam" weapons appear to operate at speeds which are below those of an under-powered airsoft gun? In space these weapons appear to operate much faster, in fact the speed which they travel seems to be the speed of a schoolboy's pen across a sheet of paper and the further back the observer is positioned the faster these "bolts of light" appear to be travelling.

Martin Willett Well, as Dominus said, most of the weapons seen in Star Wars are supposedly actually plasma and particle beam weapons. According to the wiki the Death Star's "Superlaser" as well is actually a exotic matter beam array. Particle beams would be amazingly powerful weapons in reality. People like to talk about the power of railguns, but if the projectile is shot with enough energy, it becomes a particle beam regardless. Not to mention that a hyperspeed cloud of death would deliver more energy to the target as well. Of course, they can't travel at the speed of light itself.

I've just read it into and it seems that there is a semi-canon explanation - the E11 blaster rifles (ones every Stormtrooper is using) had a couple of upsides. They were light, compact, versatile and easy to produce. They weren't, however, too accurate and had high recoil due to light design.
